Friday November 6, 2009

Good Friday from the First Alert Storm Center

After a windy, wet and busy day yesterday, the weather will stay active again today. The strong winds are over now, but it will still be breezy for most of the day. We'll have more showers vs. the steady rain that we had at times yesterday. However, we are now sitting in a pattern were thunderstorms are very possible...so plan on seeing some thunderstorm activity throughout the day.

Also today the Coast will see swells reach 30 ft while the Cascades pick up two to four feet of new snow from Friday through Sunday. If you're driving across the passes today, expect 8-12" of new snow. We get a break from the wet weather Sunday, but a new storm brings more rain and mountain snow Monday night.

Good morning from the First Alert Storm Center

A fairly powerful storm is slowly making its way in across the area today. So far the winds are already picking up at the coast, where we have a High Wind Warning beginning at noon. Look for sustained winds between 35-45 mph with gusts above 60 mph possible. Inland spots today will be generally breezy, but occasionally windy. As for the rain, that will also push in towards the late morning and early afternoon. The rain will start to get fairly heavy this afternoon and then again tonight. Speaking of tonight, once the rain starts the cooler air will work its way in, the snow levels will lower and the snow will start to pile up. 6-10" of snow possible tonight, with 2-3' possible through Sunday. All in all, this is a strong Fall storm that we're so use to.

Another storm renews the rain Friday night and Saturday followed by a short break Sunday.

Good morning from the First Alert Storm Center

It's a clear and cool morning across the area today. East winds have been going overnight, so Portland has stayed in the upper 40s, while west of Portland we've seen temperatures fall into the lower 30s. This afternoon things will be more uniform, with partly sunny skies, high clouds and highs in the lower 60s. Tomorrow though, the weather gets busy.

Thursday, the winds begin to back to the south as a strong storm gets ready to roll inland. Rain Thursday night will be heavy at times into Friday morning. Another storm renews the rain Friday night. Heavy snow will fall in the Cascades down to the passes beginning Friday night and lasting through the weekend. Large swells, 20-25 feet, will batter the Coast Friday and the weekend along with heavy rain and winds that may prompt coastal wind warnings. Right now there is a High Wind Watch for the central and southern parts of the Oregon Coast.

Tuesday November 3, 2009

Good morning from the First Alert Storm Center

It's a cold and foggy morning again across the area. Temperatures are ranging from freezing to the upper 30s. That means if you see some areas of fog on your way to work, and you probably will, you might run into some patchy frost or patchy freezing fog. Shouldn't be a major issue, but just keep it in mind on your way to work and school.

Today we have some high pressure building over us, giving us dry conditions and calm weather. We again have a lot of fog out there to start your day off, but once it burns off we'll see at least partly to mostly sunny skies. Highs today should top out in the lower 60s. The only kink to throw in the plans today is the east wind through the Gorge. The winds will be pretty breezy today, but increase tonight to become pretty windy.

Tomorrow looks a lot like today with morning clouds and afternoon sun. Then Thursday the pattern will really start to change with rain and more mountain snow coming in. The snow level by Friday should be down to around 3,000'.

Rain has been with us all day, and most areas will see rain for the better part of the day today. We've already seen some impressive rainfall totals just in the past few hours. It'll be that way all day today.

We'll get a break from the rain Thursday evening and Friday, but more rain rolls in Friday night and early Saturday. It now looks like the rain will end just in time for trick-or-treaters Saturday night. After that we should see a stretch of dry weather from Sunday into the middle of next week.

Good morning from the First Alert Storm Center

It is a cold morning so far across the area. Temperatures in Portland are in the lower 40s, but west of Portland we're already in the lower to middle 30s. Patchy fog will be around again this morning too, so expect some reduced visibility at times on your way to work.

High pressure is here for a day giving us dry conditions, and even a little sunshine for the afternoon. Once the patchy fog burns off we'll see some clearing, but not a whole lot. High clouds ahead of the next weather system are already spreading inland. So at most today, expect filtered sunshine with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Rain will return to the coast late tonight, close to midnight, and stick with us for tomorrow. A warm front will push mostly into western Washington, but enough of it will move our way for some rain. Speaking of western Washington, so much rain will push in that there are Flood Watches in effect for some area rivers. Thankfully around here we won't see anything like that with this system.

Friday we'll see some showers off and on all day. Heading into Halloween the weather is actually looking better. I'd say for Halloween you'll see showers for the first part of the day, and dry weather by Saturday evening!

Good morning from the First Alert Storm Center

After a busy day yesterday we're off to a showery day again today. Showers, thunderstorms and more mountain snow today are all very possible. We've already seen over a foot of snow at Timberline Lodge, and we're not done yet.

Today we're sitting in the cool showery section of the weather system. We'll see on and off showers all day long today, with the chance for isolated thunderstorms. Those thunderstorms could bring some brief heavy rain, hail and gusty winds...and of course some lightning. The best chance for those storms is the first part of the day, especially since we'll start to dry out tonight.

Tomorrow high pressure will build in for about a day, giving us some dry conditions. It won't stay dry for long however as another fairly wet system moves in later Wednesday night and Thursday. In fact it looks very wet again for Thursday, Friday and yes for most of Halloween Saturday.

morning update below:
October 26, 2009,

Good morning from the First Alert Storm Center,

We squeezed out a beautiful day on Saturday, then saw much more cloud cover and rain on Sunday. Today we'll continue with that cloudy pattern, and today we'll add a lot of rain into the mix.

Temperatures this morning are fairly mild, and are probably at daytime max temperatures. I think this afternoon we'll actually cool off a little as the rain pushes in, and cooler air moves in behind the cold front. I think later this morning through the afternoon we'll have some very wet weather. The coast range and some spots in the mountains may see about an inch of rain.

Tonight as the cold front pushes through the snow level will start to drop near 4,500 feet, even down to about 2,500 feet tonight. We have a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from this evening through tomorrow morning. We could see as much as 6-12" of new snow.

Tomorrow we'll sit in a showery pattern, with a slight chance for some thunderstorms. Wednesday looks dry, but then the rest of the week looks wet. Have a great Monday

Good morning from the First Alert Storm Center

Wet weather is moving in again today, with light rain this morning, and rain later today. Overall a pretty typical Fall day, and even more so a very typical Fall pattern.

Today there is a weather system slowly pushing inland. This morning there isn't a whole lot to it, we have only seen light showers inland. The rain though will increase throughout the late morning and early afternoon, become heavy at times, and then turn to showers tonight. Highs today will top out in the lower 60s. It will be a bit on the breezy side at the coast too as the front pushes through.

Tomorrow we will have plenty of fog and low cloud cover to start, then we'll see some afternoon sunbreaks. Sunday the wet weather returns, especially for the afternoon. So if you have outside plans on Sunday, do them early before it turns wet.

Next week the weather will cool off for the first couple of days as we see more showers. Then Tuesday and Wednesday we'll have some drier conditions.

The morning update is below:

Thursday October 22, 2009

Good morning from the First Alert Storm Center

Fog and low clouds have formed across the area today, so expect to see some on your way in. You may have reduced visibility because of the fog. Eventually we'll see some sunbreaks later this afternoon.

High pressure is moving over us today, giving us dry and calm conditions...a big change from the wet weather yesterday. We have to get through a lot of low clouds and fog early, then we'll see some sunbreaks for the afternoon. Highs today should top out in the lower to middle 60s.

Later tonight we'll start to see some increasing clouds, especially at the coast. We may even see a little light rain at the coast tonight, as the first weak wave pushes in. That weak wave tonight is just the beginning of what's coming for tomorrow. Look for a wet afternoon tomorrow across Portland.

This weekend we'll have morning clouds and afternoon sun on Saturday, then rain on Sunday. Into next week temperatures will cool off and the weather will stay active.

morning update below:

Wednesday October 21, 2009

In the mean time those thunderstorms may give you some brief areas of heavy rain and gusty conditions.

The cold front moving through is a quick moving storm, which is why we'll see showers instead of consistent rain this afternoon. Those thunderstorms should taper off as well. This afternoon high temperatures will top out in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

Tomorrow we'll have a lot of low level moisture left, so we'll have some fog and low cloud cover develop. Into the afternoon however we'll have partly sunny skies with slightly warmer temperatures. We'll bounce back into a wet pattern for Friday, go dry for Saturday, then wet again for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Morning Clouds Then Sun

The forecast is a tricky one today. I'm still holding with the forecast below, because it makes too much sense to change a whole lot. However, it's getting tricky. We're already seeing incoming high clouds, which is fine because all they usually do is filter the sun. Today as those clouds filter the sun, they are also cutting down the ability to burn off those low clouds. So I think we'll see limited sunshine...with Partly sunny skies!

Morning forecast below:

Tuesday October 20, 2009

Good morning from the First Alert Storm Center

We have a lot of fog out there to start your day. You may run into some pretty low visibility on your way to work. After the fog burns off however, and it will, the sun will come out and the afternoon looks nice.

An area of high pressure is moving over us today giving us dry and calm weather. We do however have enough moisture over us to condense out a fair amount of fog this morning. We should still see at least partly sunny skies for the afternoon, but the low clouds will be slow to clear. Highs today should top out in the mid-60s.

Tonight high clouds will start to move in, getting ready for the next round of rain for tomorrow. Another weather system will push in tomorrow morning for more clouds, rain in the morning, then showers in the afternoon. We may see an isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon especially in the mountains.

Thursday after a lot of morning cloud cover again we'll see afternoon sunshine. Friday we'll start off nice with partly sunny skies and dry conditions. We will however see increasing high clouds and then rain at night. Saturday we should clear out for partly sunny skies. Sunday more of the same until the evening when rain will push in. Then very wet weather is coming up for Monday.

By the way, it's "ah ha" not "the ah-ha's". The birthday fact of the day was...in 1985 "Ah-Ha"'s song "take on me" hit number one on the pop charts. I called them "the ah-ha's" Oh well! But yup, got that one wrong.
Anyway, most of the showers will be in the mountains for the rest of the day. Look for mostly cloudy skies with some sunbreaks. Have a great day!

The morning forecast is below:

October 19, 2009

Good morning from the First Alert Storm Center,

We squeaked out a pretty nice day yesterday with mostly dry conditions and even a little sun. Nice day overall. Today won't be quite as nice, but not a horrible day by any means.

Today there is an area of low pressure well to our south off the Oregon coast. Most of the showers are staying well to our south, mainly into California. We are only seeing a few light showers spread to our area today. Overall that is the trend for the day, just a chance for a few light showers. More than anything you'll probably run into a light mist, or maybe some patchy fog. This afternoon we'll keep it mostly cloudy, and mostly dry with only a slight chance for a shower.

Tomorrow I think we'll start off with a lot of fog, but eventually we'll see a little sunshine. I think we could see partly sunny skies once the fog burns off. Then we go right back to the wet pattern for Wednesday. Thursday we dry out, Friday we'll see a chance for some rain, Saturday dry and Sunday a chance again. Up and down all week.

Have a great Monday!
Thursday October 16, 2009

Good Morning from the First Alert Storm Center

It sure felt mild last night, and we're off to a mild start this morning. We're sitting in the warm sector of an incoming weather system that will eventually bring some very heavy rain.

Highs today will be near 70°, but the rain bears down tonight and sticks around well into Saturday. An inch or two of rain will soak the valleys, 2-5 inches in the mountains, before the rain tapers off Saturday afternoon.

Sunday brings a partly cloudy and dry day, with rain returning about every other day next week, beginning with a wet Monday. There is a chance for another totally dry day by Thursday.

Thursday October 15, 2009

Good Morning from the First Alert Storm Center

It sure was a busy weather day yesterday. We had wind, rain, even some snow and freezing rain east of the Cascades. Today things are really calming down, and we will squeeze out a much drier day.

Today a weak warm front is lifting north through the area. We have seen some spotty showers over the area, but they are few and far between. Throughout the day however that weak weather system will continue to lift north and give us a few showers. Overall then again expect more dry than wet weather, but you'll see a fair amount of cloud cover. You should even see some fog to start your day off.

Tomorrow we should start off fairy dry, but slowly see the rain increase from the northwest. By Friday night it is going to be very wet over much of the area. A stronger warm front will push over us, almost stall, then move through late Saturday night. Sunday then should be mostly dry! Look for showers though for the beginning of next week.
