The white stuff arrives!

It's always tough to get a real, old-fashioned snowstorm here in the Northwest. Getting that right combination of ample moisture and cold air can seem impossible, especially for a frustrated snow lover. =) But we did get just enough moisture overnight and this morning, combined with the cold air, that some snow showers were falling.

Most places that got some snow in the city only got some light accumulations - but it was still a pleasant sight for many this morning. Although for school administrators, I'm sure it was more of a headache than anything else!

Personally, I got a decent shot of snow out in Hillsboro last night. Although I didn't get home from work until after midnight, it seemed a perfect time to lay on the bed and stare outside at the snowflakes floating on down. There's something about it that is so serene and peaceful. Accumulation-wise, we got about half an inch overnight. Nothing major - just enough. =)

Snowing in n. Salem again 11:00 pm

Nobody that I have seen has commented yet on how eerily similar this weather set-up is to that preceding the floods in 1996. Ample low-elevation snowfall with significant accumulations region-wide; same time of year; same weird winter weather. I don't see a pineapple express hinted at in the extended forecast, but if we get one, we could be in trouble.

I wrote this poem many years ago. It seems appropriate today.

Snowflake

I fell upon the earth so soft,
Unique in all my grace.

A child had wished upon a star,
For me to touch her face.

In gentle quiet through the night,
I blanketed the ground.

Then daybreak found the cheers of joy,
From children all around.

When children go to bed at night,
So often do they pray.

To hear the magic words that say,
“There’ll be NO SCHOOL TODAY!”

There is approximately 4 inches of snow that has accumulated since early this morning, 10 miles east of Woodland WA.

We live in Kelso/Lexington and it has been snowing here non stop since 8am this morning. We had 3 inches by 11am and it's still here. If you drive 1/2 mile south there is nothing though and the same for going to the north. We are sea level and people that we know that live high in the hills have nothing. Weird.
