Cold air is now on the way, pouring into the Pacific Northwest behind a strong cold front. Just after 7:00 tonight Sky 8 our mightly whopper chopper, was reporting snow and rain mixed at 1000ft. Between now and Saturday morning we're going to see sticking snow at 1000ft.
I don't see snow on the downtown streets tonight or even during the day on Saturday. But Saturday night is a different matter.

I think sticking snow is possible in Portland by Saturday night. Sunday morning we may wake up to see 1 to 3" of snow on the valley floor, more at higher elevations.
Cold air will keep moving across the border from Canada. By Monday morning all of the Pacific Northwest will be locked in the deep freeze.

Temperatures will be in the teens Monday morning. Yes you read that right-- teens! Highs will only climb into the upper 20s. I think we'll stay that way through much of next week. If my forecast is right. ( keeping fingers crossed here) it will be the longest cold snap in 10 years.

Transitioning out of cold events like this is rarely easy. Looking at long range data, we won't begin to get above freezing until late next week. The warm up may start with another snow or ice event.

I know weather forecasting is not an exact science but how can the Saturday low be above the Sunday high? Are we going to drop seven degrees between 24:00:00 and 00:00:01?
Saturday 7am-
1 inch and growing 500 feet up between Kalama and Woodland. Snowing to beat the band here!! Let it snow let it snow let it snow.....
For us gardeners this is a mixed blessing. The good news is a long freeze helps keep the cherry and apple trees happy, and generally reduces the nasty bugs' presence in the garden (and home!). The bad part is I don't know anyone who gardens that doesn't hope the mild winter will bring back petunias (I had some three years old about 4 years ago) or other fair-weather plants.
I am always curious to see how these events play out. Sometimes, it seems like all the hype about portland snow is all for nothing. Although I have to say, above any meteorologist, you are usually the one to predict a big event like this first. Do you really think the temperature drop and moisture will bring snow to the valley floor, moreover sticking snow?
Thanks!
Keep up the good work!

Snowing hard in Astoria. It started around 4:30 AM. We now have about a half an inch on the ground.
How can the media talk for hours on end about something that hasn't even happened yet? Repeating the same thing over and over isn't news. I'd rather watch Meet The Press!
McMinnville OR No snow all night, this morning was rather warm. I think 57.5 snowflakes fell around 7:30am and we have no snow on the ground or streets. so much for the winter stomr warning!! Good business though for Les Schwab!!
I hate to admit this but Oregonians look like idiots every winter!! I'm from the east coast and this would be considered a normal winter day. Why don't you avoid the accidents and loss of lives by putting SALT on the roads? This is the only way to prevent freezing on roadways along with using a few plows. One week out of the year will not kill the environment. Use some common sense Oregon!! If you were on the east coast, plows would be out now salting and sanding all major roads and out again at 1 am every morning. There are enough people out of work willing to plow and salt the roads for a week!!! Don't film people crashing their cars and sliding off bridges unless you're will to show what is being done to prevent the situation! It's not amusing.

Once again, you're at it. You have been giddy for days, waiting for your snowgasm like you waited for Santa as a child. We heeded your warnings to get things done and stay home when it hits. Now give me my TV back. There is a world outside of the Portland Metro area, and I'd like to know what's going on out there. Stop showing me feet dragging through ice, snow falling on a mountain pass in the winter, and snow chains being put on busses. Give me the real news, or give me regular programming. Got something to say, I'll let you use the bottom of the screen, and any air time devoted to advertising. PLEASE STOP this year for once! Randy
