Hello everyone! You may have been recently enjoying your Saturday or Sunday evening, television tuned to KGW (of course) =), when a new weather guy appeared. That guy was me - Joe Michaels.
So where am I from? I grew up in New Jersey, then moved to Florida to go to college. I really enjoyed the Florida Keys - you can see by my tan in the above photo! That was taken in Key West, just 90 miles from Cuba. As far as my broadcasting career goes, my most recent weather position was in Orlando, where I was working as the morning meteorologist. I'm sure you may remember the Florida hurricanes back in 2004. I was there for that unbelievable season, when three hurricanes hit my viewing area. I'm glad I was in Orlando then, not only to experience such wild weather, but also to help my viewers get through those trying storms. I moved to the Pacific Northwest, Seattle specifically, in August of '06, and moved down the road to Portland last month. I'm enjoying working here at KGW, and I hope you are enjoying watching my weekend weathercasts as much as I enjoy doing them! My biggest thing right now - learning about my new city! So if anyone has any suggestions on where to buy a condo, or where I can find the best Italian and sushi restaurants in town, feel free to drop me an e-mail! 13 CommentsLeave a comment |

You're doing a great job on the weekends! Just curious, where did you get your meteorology degree?

I worked on my degree at Florida State University, getting my BS in Meteorology in 2003.

3. Get used to the rainbows! Oregon gets plenty of them - single, double, and every so often a triple. See #1 above.
It's great to have a regular eather guy on the weekend. It was always different! I look forward to seeing you this weekend. Do you work weekdays too behind the scenes since your responding to peoples comments already?
btw....looks like you were having fun at the Florida Keys...but as I look at that picture, it doesn't look anything like you at the top of the page! Have a nice weekend.
Deby, you already know this after we chatted through e-mail, but in case others are wondering - I grew up in South Jersey, about 15 minutes from Philly.
And Mike, yep, I'll be around most weekends. And I'm actually working behind the scenes right now, but will soon be working as a reporter during the week. Ah yes, and the Keys. It's amazing how different someone can look with a suit and tie on vs. a bathing suit. =) But trust me, it's me.

Nice to see a new face on the weekends. Welcome to Oregon from another "transplant" from Montana in 1974, 1980 & 1995. I'm staying this time!

Italian food? Sushi, I don't know so much. But Italian?
Go to SE 181st and Stark. Guiseppe's Italian Restaurant. You will get the hugest portions, and the best pizza too. But I know that saying that may put me at odds with Flying Pie Pizza on about 79th and Stark. Anyway, Guiseppe's is family run, family friendly, and a very nice atmosphere. I used to work there in my college days (early 90's) and go back often because it's so good.
