Airfares Climb for Spring and Summer Travel

A US Department of Transportation report says airfares are up almost 10% over levels a year ago. The report says fares are at their highest point in 6 years. Anecdotally, fares from PDX to Las Vegas, that ran about $180 last year, are running over $200 this year. Fares from PDX to Oakland, which used to run $120 to $130, are running around $175. And trans-Atlantic fares, which had been running between $800 and $1000... are...



New Route for Horizon at PDX

Horizon Air has annouced it will increase service at its Portland hub with new non-stop flights to Reno. There will be one daily non-stop flight in each direction, on a 74-seat Dash 8 Q400 turboprop. Introductory fares are priced at $154 round-tip... or $77 each way. Service begins on April 3rd.

New West Coast Airline a Step Closer to Takeoff

Virgin America (http://www.virginamerica.com) plans to apply for its operating certificate today, after filing its business plan with the Department of Transportation in December. Alaska and Horizon Offer Special Deals for Oregon Customers

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air are offering discounts for Oregon travelers on flights to the south, midwest, and the east coast. As reported on the USA Today travel blog (at http://blogs.usatoday.com/sky/) the discount will take 15% off the lowest available fare.

More Spring Fare Sales

Southwest Airlines is joining American Airlines and Frontier Airlines... offering a coast-to-coast fare sale beginning now and running through June 9th. Seats are limited... but the deals are good. Southwest is offering all flights at $49 to $159 each way, based on round-trip purchase. Here are some of the deals, on Southwest, specific to Portland:

PDX On-Time? Not So Much.

The news from the Department of Transportation wasn't want leaders at the Port of Portland wanted to hear. For the month of November, PDX ranked 5th worst airport in the country for on-time arrivals. 25.3% of flights at PDX got in at least 15-minutes late (many came-in much later than that).

Winter Fare Sale

American Airlines starts the winter fare war today, by cutting fares systemwide. The reduced fares must be purchased by January 10th. The fares apply to flights through March 8th... so they won't be good for most spring break travel.
