Winter Weather Update for PDX

10:07 PM Wed, Nov 30, 2005 |

Current Operations at PDX

For the most part, flights are operating normally. Some minor delays are reported on flights to and from Denver, Minneapolis, and San Jose... but those are unrelated to weather in Portland.

To check flight status log onto http://www.flypdx.com/flights.aspx.
To check the status for all major US airp...

Winter Weather at PDX

2:24 PM Wed, Nov 30, 2005 |

PDX says it's ready for the potential storm on Thursday. The airport has already de-iced its runways and taxiways. And crews are on standby.

The big cause of delays during snowy weather: de-icing the planes. Each plane has to be meticulously sprayed with de-icing fluid, to clean its wings and control surfaces. So if it does snow, expect an extra 15 to 30 minutes per plane to get it done.

PDX has travel tips on its website a...

The Trip Back Home

9:05 PM Fri, Nov 25, 2005 |

I hope you've all had a great holiday... and a great time traveling to see your families. Unfortunately, it looks like the trip back home could be somewhat more complicated than what we saw on Wednesday and Thursday.

First, Sunday really is the busiest travel day of the year.

Second, a large part of the country will be mired in less-than-perfect weather. That includes rain in the Midwest, snow in the upper-Midwest an...

Tips to Keep Your Sanity at PDX this Holiday

8:02 PM Tue, Nov 22, 2005 |

This will be the busiest Thanksgiving travel week in PDX history. The Port estimates 313,000 of us will fly through PDX by Sunday. 48,000 just tomorrow. So here's a collection of the tips I use when I fly out over the holidays.

- Get there early. I know... we hear this all the time. But it really does matter when the airport's jammed. They tell you 2-hours, but I always try for 90 minutes. Unless I'm parking the...

Textbook Landing

12:25 PM Mon, Nov 21, 2005 |

Some good troubleshooting by the pilots, talking with crews at Gulfstream, ended with a safe and "normal" landing at the Hillsboro Airport for that Nike jet with landing gear problems. It was the best of all possible outcomes.

Now, the works goes forward to find the cause of the landing gear problems. And to get the jet back into the air.

We'll have all the updates right here at KGW.com.

Breaking News Update

11:03 AM Mon, Nov 21, 2005 |

We've seen the first pictures of the Nike jet with langing gear problems as it completes flybys at the Hillsboro Airport. The video clearly shows the right main gear is stuck in a near-upright position. While this will be a tricky landing for the pilots, that's not to say its impossible. All commerical and corporate pilots train for events just like this. It's likely we'll get to watch these pilots' skill play-out as they bring this to a s...

Monitoring Breaking News

10:18 AM Mon, Nov 21, 2005 |

Along with the full resources of the Port of Portland, the Portland Police and Fire Bureaus, Nike, and NewsChannel 8, we continue to monitor the emergency landing of a Nike corporate jet at PDX. That jet is reporting landing gear problems. Reports say one of the main landing gear, under the wing, is at a 45-degree angle.

The plane took off shortly after 7am from the Hillsboro Airport, en route first to PDX for a scheduled stop, then ...

Welcome!

9:00 AM Fri, Nov 18, 2005 |

It's an exciting new beginning for KGW. These blogs provide a way for us... the KGW staff... to communicate more directly with you.

I intend to keep this blog updated with travel and aviation stories we just don't have time for on the air. I'll have special extras here. You'll be able to find travel deals, more in-depth reporting, and stories unique to this website. I'll try to update daily, during the week.

If you have any...
