Aaron Weiss: November 2008 ArchivesHere's your live show stream, and here's where to follow the Twitter conversation during the show. Aaron the producer will also be watching this thread during the show, so if you have anything to say about the Civil War, Thanksgiving leftovers, or reindeer droppings, have at ... While our Studio on the Square is still a couple months away from completion, Joe Smith will be at Pioneer Courthouse Square tonight for the annual tree lighting. The actual lighting happens live during our 6 o'clock newscast, but we figure it will be enough of a party that folks will still be there afterwards for Joe to talk to Live @ 7. ...For this day after Thanksgiving, Anne Yeager is heading out in search of people who are doing anything BUT shopping. If you're not hitting the mall today, drop us a note and tell us what you're doing. ...Here's the live stream, with open mics during the break. If you're looking for more on Adolf Hitler's gold bookmark, >> Continue reading: Wednesday's live show thread Tomorrow, hundreds if not thousands of volunteers will take time on Thanksgiving to serve meals at churches and homeless shelters across the Portland area. But the need for volunteers goes far beyond Thanksgiving and the holiday season. That's why we invited Hands On Greater Portland to come on the show tonight. They're a clearinghouse of sorts to match nonprofit gr... Willamette Week is reporting that the U of O is asking for permission to change the Made in Oregon sign to read University of Oregon instead. We've got a little bit of everything tonight: Rampant consumerism, Buddhist teachings, and excessive violence. What else do you want from a TV show? If you've got questions for Ole Nydahl, t... In the Hot Box tonight: Buddhist teacher Lama Ole Nydahl.
Joe Smith is headed for a little wholesome holiday fun at The Grindhouse Film Festival. We're talking 2-minute trailers for dozens of B-movies, strung together into 90 minutes of non-stop action, gore and sex in all its 35mm glory. The festival is at the Hollywood Theater on NE Sandy. Here we go! Check the live stream here for open mics during the breaks. (It's about 30 seconds behind live TV.) If you've got thoughts on the Citibank bailout, the Civil War, football food, or your favorite local distilleries, Aaron the producer will be watching your comments here during the show. ...
The Hot Box takes a breather today to make room for a new occasional segment with the good folks from MIX magazine. MIX is the Oregonian's glossy food & drink magazine, and if there's one thing Live @ 7 hasn't had enough of in our first two weeks, it's drinking. If you’ve been watching the show, you’ve seen us run lots of comments from Twitter. Unless you’re among the twitterati, however, you may have no idea what the heck twitter is. The best quick explanation I’ve seen is from @verso, who called it “More than instant messaging, less than email. Public like a blog, but 140 chars tops.” Our twitter friends at >> Continue reading: What’s this Twitter thing anyway? Joe Smith will suffer for his craft once again tonight as he heads to the Heathman Hotel for the Beaujolais Nouveau Fete and Wine Auction. Sure, Slate says the >> Continue reading: PDX Tonight: Beaujolais Nouveau Glad everyone enjoyed the open mics during breaks last night. Here's tonight's stream. We'll keep that going until someone says something they shouldn't and we get shut down. If you've got comments about electric cars, Twilight, or anything else that's on your mind, leave them here. Aaron the producer will be watching this thread during the show. ...
Joe Smith’s off to his first non-public event for Live @ 7, the unofficial local cast & crew party for Twilight. (If you’ve been in an Afghan cave until recently, it’s the vampire movie based on the bestselling book series.) It officially hits theaters at midnight tonight, and even though the reviews are... We'll be streaming live tonight, and we'll try to keep Steph's mic open as we reset during breaks. If you have questions for J.D. Roth or want to encourage Joe Smith to chug more egg nog, Aaron the producer will be watching this thread (and the twitter feed) during the show. ...
Joe Smith is heading to Elephants Delicatessen on NW 22nd for the first annual Northwest Eggnog Competition. Competing restaurants include 23 Hoyt, Besaw’s, Jo Bar, Uptown Billiards, The Heathman, Saucebox, Muu-Muu’s, and Elephants. The noggin' starts at 6 and runs until 9, so you've got plenty of time to try them all. Just make sure... Just in time for the Worst Christmas Ever (at least as far as the economy is concerned), the dean of the Frugal Bloggers, J.D. Roth, is coming to the show tonight. J.D. is the man behind the wildly popularGet Rich Slowly blog. He’s coming with a slew of tips for keeping Christmas affordable, and he’s brining visual aids – his favorite DIY Christmas gifts. Got a question for J.D.? Leav... Thanks to the Blazers, we don’t have a show today, but Steph and Aaron are still here, working on some holiday specials. It’s kind of like the Charlie Brown specials, but without Vince Guaraldi music. Keep an eye on the show Twitter feed or Steph’s feed to see if we actually get any work done. ...If you’ve got mini-movie reviews, questions for career counselor Peter Paskill, or just want to complain, Aaron the producer will be watching this thread during the show. ...
Consider this an open thread for 1-sentence movie reviews. James Bond? The Milk red carpet benefit? Fuel? My take on Quantum of Solace: Darn good as a spy flick, but without bad puns, innuendo and spy gadgets, it’s not really a Bond movie, is it? ...Talk about fortuitous planning. We already had Peter Paskill scheduled for the show tonight well before Oregon’s unemployment rate jumped to 7.4%, and before Citibank announced it was cu... Joe Smith is heading to the Rose Garden for the Carrie Underwood concert. We’re told Ms. Underwood doesn’t do day-of-show interviews, but we’re pretty confident her fans do. Looks like there are still seats available at face value ($55-$45-$35), so if country pop is your thing, head on down. ...Off we go. If you’ve got questions for the director of Fuel, Aaron the producer will be watching this thread during the show. If you’ve got questions for the director of Milk, you’re probably on your own. Bonus link to the BikePortland... It’s not quite like mentioning a no-hitter to a pitcher while the game is in progress, but OSU fans must be a little worried at the prospect of the Rose Bowl getting so much attention. If they can beat Cal and Arizona, it’s going to be a Civil War for the ages on November 29. Pat Dooris is talking to fans and Coach Riley today...
Live @ 7’s movie night, part 2: Joe Smith’s heading to the Schnitz for the red carpet premiere of Gus Van Sant’s new film, Milk. The event is a fundraiser for Outside In. Odds are against us scoring Gus or Sean Penn for a live interview, and the PR folks couldn’t even guarantee us Jam... It’s shaping up to be Movie Friday on Live @ 7. We’ve got Josh Tickell, director of the documentary Fuel, in the Hot Box. Josh has lucked out with the release date – with the Big 3 on the brink of bankruptcy and the bailout losing steam, a whole lot of people are thinking about how to reboot the auto industry... We’ve got Randy Leonard in the Hot Box, talking about his newly-released report on the Police Bureau. Unfortunately we could only get Commissioner Leonard in his office, so the interview is on tape. We’ve invited Chief Rosie Sizer and incoming Police Commissioner Dan Saltzman to the Hot Box next week to talk about the report too. Aaron the Producer will ... We’re sending Joe Smith to Ignite Portland 4 at the Bagdad Theater. In our morning meeting, everyone seemed to think it’s starting earlier than usual this year, and that’s probably a reflection of the dismal season retailers think they’re about to have. Aaron the producer will be checking this thread during the show. You can also tweet us @The Square. ...We’re feeling a little scattered today. Here’s what we’ll be talking about during the Web Watch segment:
Just in from the Willy Wire: Students at Portland’s oddly named “Clark K-8 @ Binnsmead” (formerly Binnsmead Middle School) are petitioning to rename their school for Barack Obama. I was going to guess that would be the world’s first Obama school. I was wrong. Obama Elementary School >> Continue reading: Barack Obama K-8 school? In the Hot Box tonight: Patrick Emerson, OSU Economics professor and author of the Oregon Economics Blog. We were originally thinking to send Joe Smith to Guys & Dolls at Portland Center Stage, but since it's the final week, there's no Tuesday show. Lucky for us, both Stef and I are geek enough to want to go to the Buckminster Fuller play instead. So we’ll give Joe a crash course in Buckyballs and geodesic domes. Here, have a trippy trailer from PCS:... Whew! The phones lit up during the Hot Box segment tonight. Some of you out there REALLY dislike Lars. That, of course, is his job. The man gets paid to fire people up. The good news – we welcome a wide range of opinions on the show. Rest assured we will have plenty of liberals, conservatives and moderates (are there still moderates in Oregon?) on Live @ 7. Best of all, if you really can’t stand Lars, or any of our guests, tell us! Twi... Lars Larson is our inaugural guest in the Hot Box tonight. We’re going to be talking about the future of the Republican party. Got a question for Lars? Leave a comment. (Don’t worry – we’re going to grill plenty of liberals and conservatives in the Hot Box. Don’t read too much into who we schedule any given day.) ...The Telegraph compiles a list of 50 things you might not know about Barack Obama. I had no idea he was a comic book collector (Spider-Man and Conan the Barbarian). He used to work at a Baskin-Robbins, so now he hates ice cream. And since Michelle’s wardrobe gets so much attention... Stef’s in Pioneer Courthouse Square right now, getting MOS (man on the street) interviews on the Obama family’s dog dilemma. Seems like everyone has an opinion about what kind of pooch the first-family-elect should take to the White House. The Baltimore Sun rounds up some of the coverage so far:
Joe Smith will be Live @ 7 with Lily Wilde and her 17-piece orchestra, performing at Duff's Garage. I'm told there's a middle school band opening up as well. Should be a good time. -Aaron ...We've got a couple options for Joe Smith's first "PDX Tonight" live shot on Monday. He suggested Lily Wilde and her 17-piece orchestra, at Duff's Garage. There's also Toumani Diabate, a legendary musician and storyteller from Mali who plays the kora, a 21-stringed harp. He's at >> Continue reading: Where do we send Joe? |
