Thanks to our friends at the Portland International Film Festival, we've managed to score a pair of tickets to what's arguably Portland's biggest event of the year: The world premiere of Coraline. Coraline is the first feature film from Portland's LAIKA studios. This isn't some "Portland" premiere -- it's an Honest-to-Goodness WORLD PREMIERE, in 3D to boot! We're talking movie stars, red carpet, the whole shebang. It's the Opening Night Gala of the 32nd Portland International Film Festival, presented by the Northwest Film Center. Did I mention it's also totally sold out? There are NO extra tickets floating around out there. There are NO giveaways happening... except this one. As Rod Blagojevich might say, we're sitting on gold here. But the only thing we're extorting from you is your poetry. Your mission: Write a haiku about Coraline. It can be about anyone or anything connected to the film, including (but certainly not limited to) Dakota Fanning, Neil Gaiman, John Hodgman, Teri Hatcher, or Phil Knight, just for starters. You can write a haiku inspired by the novella if you'd like. You have until 8:00 pm PST on Tuesday, February 3rd to leave a comment on this entry containing your Coraline haiku. The best haiku wins. (Reminder: Haikus should have three lines, of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, respectively.) Important details: The winner will be chosen by a blue-ribbon panel of KGW judges and notified on Wednesday, February 4. The decision of the judges is final. The winner will receive two (2) tickets to the Coraline world premiere at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall at 7:30 pm on Thursday, February 5. You'll need to pick up your tickets at the PCPA Box Office by 6:00 pm on Thursday. You MUST leave a valid e-mail address with your entry. Only one entry per person, so make it a good one. Multiple entries or sock puppetry will cause all your entries to be disqualified. KGW employees and immediate family members aren't eligible. That just wouldn't be fair. Happy poetry! 138 CommentsLeave a comment |

oh mister gaiman
twisted mother from your mind
reminds me of mine
Unhappy girl finds
closet more than a closet
much better than Narnia.
We see Coraline
animated, yet alive.
Her love, is real.
She looked for something,
And got more than what she sought.
A life lesson, learned.
They won't write for me.
My children don't know Haiku.
So I'm on my own.
Sew buttons to mine
I hide around the corner
Mother Dear you're not
mysterious door
parallel reality
saving family
"Help us, Coraline!"
It's up to you to save them--
Your parents need you!
The other mother
Another world to see
Listen to the cat!
Little girl has a
un-exiting life until
she finds a passage
Bizarro, fun world
Sew the buttons on your eyes
No fun anymore
Coraline, don't you
see the trap in front of you?
Beware, don't get caught.
Little girl explores
Darkened world behind the door
Her button-eyed Hell
Polished button eyes
Stitched up gracefully with her
Cold metal fingers
Through the closet door,
a better alternate world?
Beware the Beldam.
Coraline my dear
Down the rabbit-hole where
Buttons mask the soul
Secret door opens.
Your Other Mother's waiting.
Coraline... Beware.
Her eyes like buttons
How dark, yet so innocent
Something isn't right
All those stinking lies
Always cold, never feeling
Damn those button eyes
Coraline please mind
your Other Mother's true form
stay out of her web
Coraline wandered
Around the old,empty house
She found a small door.
The other mother
So great,so nice,wonderful
She's bad Coraline.
The door she opened
The other mother's hand snapped
Go Coraline! run!
The tea party trap
The other mother's hand fell
The Beldam was gone!
Popcorn blossoms and
A magic garden of lights.
Portland's talent shines
Dangerous wishes
These buttons fit you just right
Be brave and you'll see
Miserable girl
Finds refuge in her closet
To good to be true?
A world of her own
Mother Dear... where are your eyes?
It's not as it seems...
A world of her own
Mother dear... where are your eyes?
It's not as it seems...
"What is Coraline?"
"Some Portland cartoon, I think"
"Like 'The Simpsons?'" "No."
A Coraline time
Two sets of black button eyes
Tickets would be fine
One curious girl
Now all eyes are on Portland
Welcome Coraline!
Dark and delicious
Our world is so suspicious
Black cat, talk to me.
Dreaming of buttons
Mother has forsaken me.
Did I fall asleep?
Coraline, darling
apple of my button-eye...
come to Mother, dear.
button eyes blank stares
mother dear, now winter's here
beyond the door: fear
An other mother
waits in a world of evil
behind a brick'd door.
Through cold and drizzle
loving newcomers do bike,
to meet Coraline.
beloved feline
other mother's button eyes
must be Coraline
Young girl explores doors
To her three parents' dismay!
Beware of buttons.
Coraline, my child,
You pass through thresholds you shan't.
Treachery awaits.
My closet's a taunting retreat
It's a world of abstraction in create
A farce I'll certainly meet
Red carpet winter
A new world it promises
Coraline knows more
A different world here
just beyond the closet door.
Steer clear of buttons!
Hear us through the door
Wishes can be dangerous
Help us if you can
Bugs, and bored, and then...
Buttons for good little girls
Find them, get back home.
Beware the rats or
The Mouse? Move over Disney;
Here's Portland's Laika!
First shoes, now movies
Phil Knight's empire expands to
animation. Hmmmm...
Little frogs sing. Sad
Girl's search for comfort brings joy
To us. Coraline
Through a door she went
Into a world most bazaar
To save her parents
through a door she went
into a world most bazaar
to save her parents
as a loving mom
i so want to take my son
to Laika's premiere
Clever and brave girl
explores a mystery world
soon to run from it
Oh dear Coraline
Not happy with what you have
through a door you went
Oh dear Coraline
Not happy with what you have
through a door you went
Oh dear Coraline
Not happy with what you have
through a door you went
Save them coraline
Now it's off with Beldam's hand
Once more safe and sound
Save them coraline
Now it's off with Beldam's hand
Once more safe and sound
A bored little girl
Doesn't appreciate Mom
This ain't no Disney
Such a bold young girl,
Finds door to a secret world,
Life concealed inside.
Blue-haired Coraline
Wanted a life more sublime
Not black button eyes
Unbutton your eyes
Other Mother stitches lies
Coraline defies
Coralines poor life
Hidden closet is now found
Dream turns to nightmare?
City great. Film fine.
The two combine. So divine!
Portland. Coraline.
Beldar's black buttons
Coraline's creepy capers
Portland's proud premiere
So adventurous
Bold and brave and beautiful
That's so Coraline
Explore your new home,
Coraline not Caroline.
Slip into other worlds
Bring new light to our
most lovely home of Portland.
Yay! For world premier.
Maker of nightmares,
beloved by all that will see,
we welcome you here.
Explore your new home,
Coraline not Caroline.
Into other worlds.

most lovely home of Portland.
Yay! for world premier.
Maker of nightmares,

Don black button eyes
Dilemma finds Coraline
Relive pink palace
Clever Coraline
Be careful what you wish for
Evil mother waits
Mothers hand reaches
with needle and thread that binds
fear the button eyes
Travel through the lies
truth is what mommy decides
truth is button eyes!
Hodgman once replied
to me on Twitter, you know.
(He's in this film, right?)
Born here in Portland
3D silicone puppets
Yes - it's Coraline!
The cat with no name
Coraline in Wonderland
Beware the Bedlam!
Coraline's cool and
creative, courageously
clever, cheeky too!
Trust Other Mother,
Who is afraid of buttons?
This won't hurt a bit.
Your Other Mother
uses shiny black buttons
to hide the evil
It must be a trap,
Evil is hidden by joy,
Big, black button eyes.
Mysterious girl,
You saved our life, now yourself
Lose all your fears.
Coraline is scary
Open it if you're ready
To have a great scare
Big, black button eyes
Please don't look me in the eyes
Don't, I told you so.
Secret worlds, hidden
behind quiet curtains. Just
reach out and touch them.
Secret worlds, hidden
behind quiet curtains.
Reach out and touch them.
like temptation, so
attractive is this movie
Gaimen, like cat, knows
Applied at Laika
Didn't get the job; I wept
must count on fingers
If you Laika cats
Sew some buttons to your face
Other Mother is proud
John Kellogg Hodgman
Author, humorist, P.C.
Coraline's father
through a button's view
souls pleading against the glass
grasping for the key
My "Other Mother"?
I have bad feelings about
This. Damn your eyes, "Mom"!
looking, she seeks more
the darkness offers change, but
what she had was real
looking, she seeks more
the darkness offers change, but
what she had was real
Things not what they seem
A locked door, an Other side
Better! Or is it?
A door, a dark side
Changes more than mere buttons
Beware Coraline!
A memory or a dream
A thin line between
Close my eyes and pray to stay
Black button eyes stare
She is not my real mother
My life is a lie
buttons and keys swirl
an alternate world for her
fables whirl through doors
Loneliness plagues her,
Shiny black buttons deceive,
Will she escape fate?
fear of buttons is
koumpounophobia and
this movie brings it
Beetles in her teeth
shinny web of deception
Beware Mom's hungry
Born in Oregon,
Laika made Coraline soar,
but not button shops.
An Ordinary Girl
An Extraordinary Escape
Run Coraline, Run!
button jaded eyes
or reveal emeralds lost
your soul search awaits
Coraline was right.
Be careful what you wish for!
I love you mother.

Soggy muddy mess.

Found a secret door
Cassidee age 11
So colorful and
Beautiful, a little girl
Slips away awhile
I am eight years old.
I already read the book.
Let's see the movie!
Coraline, don't go
That life is too good to be
Your parents love you.
Who is Coraline?
The Laika team worked long days
introducing her.
Coraline is cool,
She enters a magic world,
She meets her'mother'.
Smooth Black Button Eyes.
Stitch for Stitch a Great Surprise.
Beyond the door? Lies.
Coraline in hand
Laika gave him the thumbs up

What do you wish for?
Keep your life or close the door.
Look back, never more.
LAIKA and Gaiman,
team up to open a door,
adventure ensues.
Things aren't what they seem
when you're in between running
from other mother.
A passing moment
Euphoric happiness now
I miss my mother
A passing moment
Euphoric happiness now
I miss my mother
Ghosts whisper through walls
Black shadows swallow the sky
Someone wicked smiles
Girl saves family
Sixty-five have been laid off
Now, who will save theirs?
Why so sad my dear
Your other mother is here
You should fear the door
Gaimon's mental pearl
Twisted animated girl
My mind is a swirl
Little Coraline
Finds door-way to the unknown
It can't be a dream
dastardly lustrous
bendy-button eyes beguile
rosy deception
is the grass greener?
other mother wants my eyes.
real love is best.
Talking skull turtle
Cool girl with freaky blue hair
Coraline plays dead
Black cat and kid cross
And their curiosity
Could kill Coraline
discontent,searching
emptied sockets, button eyes
costs dearly this life

Button eyes tell lies

Faces, voices, cats
Brings A world of excitement
to a little girl
Through a door she finds
A new world filled with magic
Too good to be true
A taunting retreat
A farce I'll certainly meet
From the closet I keep
I already entered my Haiku (1/30/09 8:56pm)
But just learned the exact format for a haiku.
I wanted to show I could do one the right way. Thanks and good luck to all those great haiku enteries.

Oh! other mother
What big button eyes you have!
why? to eat me with!
Mother takes a bite
Beetle legs squirm, buttons shine -
“Want one, Coraline?”
Your cancer turns black
The cells breed and multiply
But you won't grow back
Beware the beldam
