Mayor McWalkout

Mayor Tom Potter says he's "not ashamed" of walking out of last night's city council meeting.

Here's my question: If not Interstate Ave., which street should Portland rename to honor Cesar Chavez? Or should all streets be off the table?

Sean Cruz makes the case for renaming Killingsworth instead. Others have said we should look at libraries or parks instead of streets.

Make your case (or link to your case) in the comments.

So it's alright to rename streets in North Portland after Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, (where the majority of African Americans live in Portland).
But it's not alright to name a street after Cesar Chavez (in a community with a significant Hispanic population). Seems like a double standard. Apparently it's the whole "illegal" immigration thing that has you folks drawing a line in the sand.
At least be honest about your brand of racism.

Yes, LET'S talk about "brands" of racism.
To the previous poster, are you actually suggesting that the Hispanics who live on Interstate *deserve* to have the name changed to honor their hero just because they are Hispanic whereas the non-Hispanic whites including Americans, Poles and other ethicities who live and own businesses there *don't deserve* to be able to keep the name or change it to one of their heroes simply because they are white? That brand of racism is called reverse-racism. Glad we're being honest.

I live in North Portland, off of Portland Blvd. aka Rosa Parks Way.

Frankly, I think that renaming streets, in general, is a waste of taxpayer money. Why not just name new streets (now being established) after historical figures like Rosa Parks and Chavez? Yes, they both deserve to be commemorated, but the City is going about this the wrong way.

I am all for renaming a street to honor the Latino community. Has anyone suggested the newly proposed Couch street couplet? It would go through a prominant part of town AND keep the alphabetical continuum in the NW blocks. Also, the Latino construction workers who will be part of that project will be excited to be part of the change. If the argument is about location and proximity, we need to talk east county, a numbered street like 82nd.

Potter needs to resign. He is disrespectful of the city council and the public.

How about renaming the street the Potter lives on Cesar Romero Blvd.

Re-naming any street is a waste of taxpayer money. How much does it cost? Any cost is too much. Local Government is always complaining about not having enough money. Sure it is only $60,000.00 here or $90,000.00 there, but it adds up. Portland Public Schools have closed both grade schools I attended when I was young because of lacking funding. Listen to the people, do your elected duty for the people, stop your own agenda. Walking out of a Public meeting because things are not going your way shows just how much you do not deserve to be our Mayor. We have been called The Hostile Community in North Portland. How about people fed up with Local Gov. B.S.? Get over it and move on.Signed,
Hostile Allan

I lean toward Airport Way. Since this really has nothing to do with the good work of C. Chavez and was a branding campaign to begin with, it accomplishes the real goal. The pro-Chavez committee puts the name in front of every one who comes in and out of the city. The city as a whole "looks" progressive. It impacts no individual citizens or small businesses.

how stupid in my opinion put up a plaque, build a statue, everone is happy , why give the burden of the expence to the residents , kis, keep it simple. i hope the city counsel would had thought of it first, but guess not, may be potteer should have a bib
when attending meeting so he can stand out. thank god he is not running agin . in my opinion. terry.

No, existing street names should be changed to honor factional or special interet heroes.

Do any streets HAVE to be renamed? Couldn't all the time, money & effort being spent on this be used foe something more important???

Too bad Potter didn`t keep going, all the way to Mexico would have been fine with me.

Aside from the cost to the city, what about the cost to businesses who have to change letterhead and checks and advertising? What about the cost to residents who have to change checks and such? This isn't just a bill to the city. MLK, Rosa Parks, Chavez and a host of others from all nationalities all deserve to be honored for their achievements, regardless of skin color, but I just don't see how the cost and hassle of changing an existing street name does them the honor they deserve. A library, a school, a public building are all far better ways to honor the heroes of society.
