Oregon deserves all of the problems that this misguided policy will cause. Mexicans are not Americans, nor do they want to be. Assimilation is not in their vocabulary. If taught in Spanish, that is all that they will know at graduation.

This putting Mexican curriculum into AMERICAN schools is a joke, right? If you come to the United States you are supposed to adapt to life in the United States (ie. learn English), not the other way around. How much is this going to cost the tax payers of Oregon?
Why is it that these people come here and think that WE should change to make it easier on them? Living in the United States is a privilege, NOT a right, and as such it is each individual's repsonsibility to assimilate themselves into American culture.
I am so tired of this garbage. It is just another way to force a North American Union down our throats.

I consider myself very much a liberal. I am not anti-immigrant as I am a second-generation immigrant on one side of my family. I stood in support during the protest parade in Portland as I don't feel people who are just looking for a better way of life should be treated as felons. However, I do feel adding a Mexican (or any other foreign language) curriculum will have a deleterious effect on an extremely-strained educational system in Oregon. I spent a year living in Chile while in High School as an exchange student. I had to rise to the challenge to learn Spanish while attending school or suffer the consequences of poor grades. They refused to alter their curriculum for me and I was partially successful. I did poorly in some classes and well in others. Why are these students not being required to learn English? I have to say I was lucky because my host family did not know English which forced me to learn Spanish in order to be able to communicate. Would I have taken the easy way out and stayed with my native language had the opportunity presented itself? Absolutely! I was 17. Thank goodness I was forced to learn the native language of Chile (Spanish). Learning Spanish opened my eyes and mind and gave me a greater appreciation for a culture other than my own. Then, there's the whole question of funding. Who's going to be paying this new program? Maybe I'm missing something here.

This is all part of the North American Union, making Mexico our stepchild and equal to America. The truth is Mexico pays nothing and the American tax payer gets the bill.
Interesting that Mexico can't educate it's own people in Mexico but they can educate and supply materials to Mexican students in America, mostly of which are illegal.
Americans better pay attention and stand up for their country or it will be too late. The SPP or North American Union requires American tax payers to build MEXICO into a first class nation just like America! Mexico again pays nothing! Educate yourselves and start fighting for your country!

I am so sick and tired of accomidating people who chose to come into this country they expect to be catered to. We do not do nearly as much for spanish speakers.
As with other people from other contries they need to learn English, it is about time we stop making it easier for spanish speakers. They need to learn English just like all the other immigrants.
If they don't want to they can always go back!

As a former resident of Oregon, I'm not sure if I should be surprised, but as an American I'm incensed. I should hope that no federal tax dollars are spent on this treasonous effort to undermine our American culture and nation, needless to say our historic assimulation of immigrants. If federal funds are used, I trust and hope that Congress will put a quick halt to this spending. Teach in English, teach American. If folks want to learn Mexican culture and language, go to Mexico.

What ever happened to English as a second language instruction? Why not use the armed forces language instruction method of immersion? Both methods have proven successful. Why are Mexicans different than other Hispanics to afford them special treatment? Whoever is running the school system in Oregon should be fired. They know nothing about educating minority students. Maybe they should go back to school instead of to Mexico!

Most unfortunately, no matter how we rant and vent, this idiotic policy _may_ go forward. I am so incensed by this policy. It will further erode our country until we are left with no common culture, no language, nothing that makes us "Americans". Perhaps with enough pressure, the school system will reconsider their wrong-headed decision. What a shame and and a scam.

Hey, they tried this in Santa Ana California, and when someone seriously looked into it, they were classes on how This country belongs to Mexico, classes on how best to abuse our social system, how best to avoid being deported, etc. Classes in how to take advantage of our great country. This is the god's honest truth. A Hispanic congress woman investigated the curriculum and found the truth and reported it to the media. The outraged ended the Mexico's involvement. We have to stop this now. This is a very dangerous precedent. Stop it now.

I'm a legal immigrant from Mexico and think this is absurd. Immigrants have no right to come here and change the culture. We have an obligation to learn the American way of life, i.e. english, respect for American laws, observance of American traditions. In other words if we come here we have an obligation to become Americans or else go back to our birth countries.
I will never understand why American citizens want to sabotage sabotage and dilute the greatest country and culture in the history of human kind.

Another thing for all in oregon to be proud of, truly pathetic. Before too long the entire left coast will be speaking spanish. I lived in Germany for years and I had to learn their language, not great but I got by. This country spends too much time playing the politically correct game and the sad part of all this, is that mexico is laughing their butt off, all the time enjoying how easily it gets this country to do its bidding.

I actually started fighting this battle 7 years ago in Beaverton, OR. Our elementary school went from an English only school with an ESL program, to a dual emersion program when a new principal was brought on board. I tried organizing parents, talked to the local school board, had conversations with the new principal, sent out flyers, you name it I tried it. No one was interested. I was labeled a racist. My house was egged, and so was my car. We decided, after watching our children become more and more frustrated with listening to Spanish half the school day, to move. We moved to Corvallis and did an intense search regarding school curriculum in the area. Needless to say, our children were way behind and had to be placed in lower math, writing, and science classes. We have been here three years and in the last year our school newsletters went from English to Spanish/English.
I am tired of going to my ATM and having to choose between English and Spanish. I am tired of accommodating. The problem is that when we fight we are labeled as being racist. I am not racist...I am American and I do not want to see America become another Mexico. In my opinion Mexico is a great place to vacation, but I certainly do not wish to live there. Apparently their citizens don't want to either.

So,70 years ago my grandfather came over from Italy and came through Ellis Island had to learn English to survive or starve. Now you cross over the border Illegally and get catered to because you do not know English. My question is simply- Are there any Americans left in the country? My parents came to the US in the 1960s. LEGALLY.
Me and my siblings were NOT allowed to speak Spanish at home, and we did not need it in school.
I grew up to be an American, of Mexican origin, who does not speak Spanish.
And I am not a hyphenated anything: I consider myself an AMERICAN.
Want Mexican curriculum?
Stay in Mexico.
If you do not want to become an American, why are you here???

This is such a great idea! Combine the stupidity of Canada with that of Oregon, and the rest of us have great places to send our illegal immigrants. Oregon is mostly considered the oriface into which you would insert the enema if the nation needed a good colon cleansing, so loading it up with illegals is a great idea. I am getting so sick and tired of this BS. In my life, starting as an Army brat, to my later adult years, I've lived many places in this world.
It has led me to consider yes, seriously starting to think, there must believe in the water of people in the USA. There must be some reason that common sense is dying in the USA.
Other countries don't do things that split the language which eventually leads to the inability of citizens to speak and communicate with a common language.
Make them learn English. During my school years, if I wasn't schooled on base, there was not one country that would have changed their teaching from their native language to English.

If the schools in question take any public tax money, then why do they have to use free materials from Mexico? If they aren't going to buy U.S. textbooks, then give the tax dollars back to the community. They can then send their kids to private school, where they may have a hope for a good education. Also, if all or most of our public schools are attended by so many foreign nationals, then the country they came from should pay for their education.

Part of an article in the New Mexico Daily Lobo. Bet they wouldn't be upset if a Mexican took down an AMERICAN FLAG...and spat on it, burned it, etc...freedom of speech, you know.

I currently live in Mexico and my sons go to school here. It costs the student about $50 to get their books here and the average person only makes about $80-$100 a week here. So why would Mexico give books to student in the U.S. and not to there own students?

I was born and raised in Phoenix, Ore., graduated from PHS and left to join the Air Force. That was in 1972 and I have not lived there since. Reading this article has confirmed to me the wisdom of putting my children throught private school and not returning to what has become one of the bluest of "blue" states.
My Wife and Son are both Mexican, and both are legal U.S. citizens and they both are amazed by the foolishness of this decision, (or as my Wife would say "stupid Gringos"). They are selling us out over votes and money, to keep them from having to get real jobs (at our expense). We need to rise up people and take back our country before it is too late. Its time to lock the doors, take count and get rid of the illegals and freeloaders. Any public official that has a problem with that ought to be voted out of office and kicked to the curb. You know what rolls downhill and it won't be long before we'll be wallowing in it and those at the top will be laughing all the way to the bank. Think of what we'll be leaving our kids! Think of all the hard earned money that you send to the government only to have that money go to freeloaders that have put nothing into the system. what a load of crap. i saw so much of this, being from texas. now i live in japan. try this kind of crap in any other foreign country and see how far you get. it's just a matter of respect. i'm not even a japanese citizen, just legal to work here. in fact, it is VERY difficult to become a japanese citizen, even if you are married to one. but, i still learned the language, as a practical matter and matter of respect to the country where i make my living. everyone needs to get their heads out of their asses. america is being destroyed BY DESIGN.

Now our stupid Governor wants to add additional toll roads to pay for more social services for illegals. I now live in the reddest part of the state but they're moving to the beautiful northwest. As a student in Southern Oregon- I must disagree with people who are against this. About 25% of my fellow students are Latin American and are capable of a lot more than what a lot pf public opinions state. The only obstacle is the language barrier and since when should schools not teach in a way that best educates the students? If you have trouble with math, science, grammar you are placed in a slower paced class, so why not specialized classes to assist people who have language needs? Teach English while teaching math or science. School is about learning- for EVERYONE.

I'm tempted to reject the Mexican curriculum out of hand except for one thing. It's probably harder, more demanding, more challenging than the typical American curriculum. You don't see the usual American texts in demand out of this country do you?

I'm tired of My property taxes going for this kind of crap. That is why the taxpayers are rebelling. Why should we have to pay for the Mexicans anyway?

I can't believe the cancer that has spread in this country through the percieved auspices of liberal (socialistic) idiology. What can be done to stop the spread of this disease? Apparently our votes don't count anymore since politicians can now sue over the undesired outcome of an election. Our tax dollars wasted when they're spent on crap like a superhighway from Mexico to Kansas, or line the pockets of lame duck politicians, or teach a Mexican curriculum in an already strained public school system. I realize that people need to help other people, but liberalism is a philosophy that puts that above taking care of ourselves first. It's kind of like putting the horse before the cart, but in this case, Americans are the ones pulling the cart, and the "Caballo" is riding in the back seat.

I'm mexican and don't want this to happen. We had to learn English when we came to this country but today's Mexican youth just demand everything. It's not right. We need to understand the American culture and respect it for what it is. It's what made this country great. Mexico is its own country and always will be so we should just let America be its own too.

One other thing to remember: Mexico has around 50 consulates in the U.S. What do they do? Essentially, those consulates only serve to flout U.S. laws by issuing matricular cards and other dubious forms of 'identification'. They also intervene when an illegal Mexican is charged with a criminal act by coaching that illegal on what they should say or not say.
Fact: There should be no more than 2 or 3 Mexican consulates in the U.S. Close the rest of them.

Our democratic majority Oregon legislators voted down every attempt to stem the tide of illegal immigration.This tide is drowning our communities. Every thing from the real ID act to checking citizenship of people registering to vote. The Democrats voted it down or wouldn't let it come out of comity. Portland's mayor and city commissioners defy Federal law and dedicate tax monies totaling 275,000 to a new day labor center. I would like to see the tax's that these day laborers paid for the year 2006. They don't pay taxes. For a city that misuses tax money this one takes the cake and is illegal. Why are we catering to Mexicans?

I have no problem with Mexicans coming to America seeking citizenship, (as long as they do it legally).
However, teaching Mexican curriculum in American schools is an outrage. Did anyone stop to think what motivates the Mexican government to provide this material? Mexico doesn’t care about their people when they are living there - so, why all the concern about those that have left?
The answer is simple: Mexico is using the US as a welfare state.
We need to get tough with Mexico and force them to fix their corrupt and backward government.
Taking on their problems doesn't help us or them.

I can speak from experience, this will make some crazy educators feel good but it will only hurt the kids. I came from South America when I was 6. They put me in a bilingual education school. I learned multiple languages none of which was English. When my parents put me in Catholic school the Nuns forced me to learn English only. That was the best thing that could have happened otherwise I would beat a severe disadvantage today. This is complete nonsense and these feel good educators will ultimately ruin the lives of these children.

I was at the wyo. boys school for 24 yrs and worked with the hard core kids in this state. One of my students that was Mexican told me that Mexico was going to take over our country. I said why? You came here illegially and didn't like your country why cange ours into yours? It doesn't make since!! If you don't like our country the go back

Well, I think it is about time that all you people who live in this great state take notice of what is happening around you!
1. Find out who in the school system is pushing this agenda
2. Find out what the costs are.
3. Find out who is paying these costs.
4. Find out why this crappy idea came to be.
5. Put together a citizens group of tax payers to DEMAND, just like Mexico does that this be stopped immed.
6. Make legislation in Oregon that makes it unlawfull to do this in the future.
7. Run out all of the consulars from Mexico in Oregon!
8. Make English the official STATE Language.
9. Make it clear to your educators that English is the spoken language that WILL be taught as the primary language in schools!
10. Press 1 for less Illegal immigration!

Like it or not, the Latinos are here. It is the plan of the Mexican government to rid the country of the poor. Our country has always welcomed the poor. Now having said that, the best thing we can do is to find a way to educate these people so they can become integrated. My suggestion is to have some of the latinos who are hear already teach them. Maybe on a volunteer basis--If the acivists want them here so badly, THEY can deal with teaching them. How's that for cost effective? Hey, Pat White, what about YOU volunteering?

The States of Oregon, California, Washington and Texas are adopting the Country of Mexico’s public schools curriculum to educate Spanish-speaking students here in America. If our teachers are going to teach Spanish-speaking students with Mexico’s public school curriculum, they should be paid at the same rate as the teachers in Mexico’s public schools.
Why would Latinos want to learn English or American culture, when the Department of Education in these States goes out of it’s way to teach them in Spanish? What about students who speak other languages? Sounds like segregation to me.
It’s not about learning English, It’s about the North American Union taking over the United States. Big business and some Politicians IE ( Bush, Clinton, Murry, Cantwell, Kennedy, Feinstein, and others ) are selling America. If they want the Latino vote that bad, let them run for office in Mexico.
The Latinos talk about having pride in their own Countries. If they are so proud of it, why don’t they stay there and fix it?

This is outrageous. According to the media that is forced down our throats (particularly during election/bond measure season), our schools are underfunded, poorly supplied and stretched to capacity. This attempt to help illegal (or the few that actually are legal)immigrants "assimilate" is egregious. I woudn't think of moving to a foreign country without learning the language - at least at a functional level. This "plan" will only create more set backs for our own children.
I used to believe this was a land "by the people, for the people".... No more. The laws being put forth are consistantly the opposite of what I vote for. Who is making these decisions? Why are they not listening to "the people"? When did it become American policy to cater to the "unwashed masses" and penalize the hard-working, tax paying American citizen?
I am completely floored. If you don't speak English you don't belong here.

This is not about Mexico taking over this country, for heaven's sake. It's about not having a large alienated, unassimilated underclass in this country that is barely educated in ANY language and does not have the skills to succeed in an information and technology economy or in a democracy. That will ultimately be far more destabilizing than any supposed "take-over" of the U.S. through illegal immigration. I speak from experience as a former bilingual education teacher here in the NW. Bilingual means TWO languages. California's misnaming of their "bilingual" programs notwithstanding, bilingual means they get both languages. This may not be possible for kids from other language groups, but the hard fact is Hispanics are a significant minority in this country--unlike, say, Russians or Vietnamese (and a lot more native language support is provided for those students than people who have commented suppose). The impact of abandoning this group will be correspondingly larger.
The fact of the matter is (and if you look at informed sources, it's not hard to find this out) that kids take years to become proficient enough in English to compete ACADEMICALLY with their native-English speaking peers. Social communication can be mastered enough for basic functioning in less than a year. Getting to the appropriate grade level (which is a moving target from year to year) takes anywhere from three to five years. And that's with the best possible program--and those are quite frankly, few and far between in this country. Meanwhile, there is all kinds of academic content that kids need to acquire that is lost because of language issues while the child is still learning English. In my experience (and I've worked in English only as well as bilingual models) you get kids who are perfectly intelligent, competent kids who aren't learning to read until into second grade because they don't know the language--they start in kindergarten at a place equivalent to native-speakers at 1 or 2 years old. You don't expect a child with the language development equivalent of a 2 year old to immediately start reading. But in Spanish they are on a par with native English speakers of their age. Teach them to read in Spanish and when they acquire sufficient English (which you DON'T stop teaching them) they can transfer their literacy skills to the new language. I have seen both approaches and there is a world of difference. In one, kids don't start reading English until second (and in a lot of cases third) grade and they basically never catch up to grade level. In the other approach, kids start reading in Spanish in K-1 and in English in first or second grade. By third grade a good portion that I saw were on grade level in both English AND Spanish. They'd had four years at that point to develop in English and then didn't have to go back to the beginning with literacy because they'd adquired THOSE skills in the language they already knew.
This is particularly critical for high-school newcomers because you're asking them to do very complex tasks with the English-language equivalent of a pre-schooler. They need to learn math, science, social studies, government, keep up their reading level, etc. If you stick them in ESL classes only, or worse dump them into English academic courses and expect them to just perform--well, you're not really living in the real world. Could YOU do it if you got dumped as an adult into your present job in another country and couldn't speak the language?
As for coming through Ellis Island and learning English all on their own in the old days--well, in the old days most people didn't work in the kinds of jobs that demand very high-level literacy skills and deep knowledge of a variety of subjects. With the communicative level of English many immigrants of a century ago learned, they wouldn't make it in today's economy either.
These kids aren't exchange students who are going home in a few months either. Most of them will be here in this country long-term whether we like it or not. We are shooting ourselves in the foot to refuse in this manner to educate them. A level playing field means they get access to the same educational opportunities everyone else does. It is NOT cheating anyone to make sure they learn what they need to learn. We do ourselves no favors by turning them out semi-educated and not literate in either English OR Spanish.

Being a certified English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher with over 35 years of experience, I can say that yes, it does take around eight years to become proficient in a second language. The prior comment from Erick written to gain our sympathies for the "unlevel playing field" is absurd when one considers that the one thing that holds a country together is its ability to communicate. If we continue to teach in Spanish, it will only further divide our country. Schools in the United States need to focus on teaching English. If you want to take Spanish...take it as an elective. Personally, I value our United States culture more than I feel sorry for those who illegally came here.

I am not surprised that from within a country that punished Native American children for speaking their native language, even going so far as to take the children away from their parents to learn English, we still have to listen to such stupidity. Africans were seperated from each other if they spoke the same language, and were tortured if caught speaking anything except the "King's English". We invaded Mexico and took California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and Texas in exchange for "peace". Preserving American culture does NOT mean preserving the "rights" of the rednecks, gringos, yankees, etc. to be
racist bigots. If teaching children using materials in their own languages while AT THE SAME TIME teaching them English offends my "English Only" neighbors, perhaps saying "Hasta la vista baby" in a German accent, from Sacramento, California, is more than symbolic.

It may not be happening in other states, but, instead of putting down Oregon, maybe offer some moral support. I don't want Oregon to become "little Tijuana". And FEDERAL laws need to change. Are you aware that if a child is born on US soil, it is an automatic citizen? Thus we are trying to kind ways to get around that federal law, by and our DHS (welfare system)is more stringent than most other states, even enacting that proof of SS# is to be shown to all case workers. Thus causing more than 6,000 illegals to be kicked off the system the first 2 weeks of inseption. If the DHS can find them, why can't others? As for teaching in Spanish here. NO!! I am so tired of having to repeat what I say to people in a certain retail store up here, only to have them call someone who speaks English fluently so I can repeat to them what I am serching for. I am also sick of being asked by males,"Se habla, Espanol?" Why do I need to? I speak a NATIVE language, Cherokee---a true native tongue---there's is not even a true Spanish---ask a person from Spain, and then duck! America won the war (Spanish-American, that is)in 1898(give or take a year), and they say we took from them! We didn't take anything, we left them to themselves. Maybe that is the problem, we diden't rebuild Mexico like we did Japan, maybe they are slighted, or maybe they feel that they made a mistake in giving up. Who knows.....the final conclusion is that they have there own country to speak their language, it is called MEXICO, so they should stay/go back there if they want to speak it in school.

This appears to be another giveaway of America. I would like to know what percentage of the 20% Latino population of students are here legally or illegally.
My Federal tax dollars are aupporting a small portion of Oregon's curriculum. I resent that my tax dollars are being used for such. I am a 7th or 8th generation immigrant and my forefathers came here legally. Neither they nor myself would ever have abused this wonderful country as the Mexican government is obviously encouraging it citizens to do. Most of them don't want to be citizens. Mexico doesn't want to clean up its economic problems...we are doing it for them. All of the rest of us legal taxpaying citizens will be paying these illegals social security eventually. We are already paying enormously for education and medical. Get a grip Oregonions.

Adding Spanish curriculum to our schools is an outrage! If they want to live here then they need to become US Citizens and learn to speak English. We should not be spending our time or money on this type of education. It's time for Americans to take a stand and stop all of the Mexicans from taking over our schools and neighborhoods. We are all paying for this with our tax dollars. If you are Spanish you are much more likely to be allowed state benefits, scholarships for college, etc. What's wrong this picture!!!!

Wow! I've never responded or left comments before but this is crazy! It's not enough that EVERY city, county, or state paper is made available in Spanish, but now our under paid, under staffed teachers get to split their time to help Spanish speaking kids? What about our kids? They don't get that extra help as it is. Don't get me wrong, we have done this to ourselves, letting anyone move to this great country, but do you see all state paperwork in Russian? In German? No! They know that when they come here speaking English is one part of making it here. Why do we cater to the Spanish speaking society SO much? This is enough! When you call any business for assistance... For Espanol press 1, for English press 2... What? Come on! If we went to Mexico would they have all paperwork in English? Would they have special English teachers for our kids? No! Why do we waste so much time and tax money on this. If they want all the benefits of this country then they can learn to speak English!

It's not about "brown skin" it's about cultural norms and behavior.
Americans are unhappy about being forced to assimilate a different ethnic group and culture at a ridiculously accelerated rate.
Issues include with the influx of illegal Mexican residents include:
They don't speak English well and don't bother to learn it.
They tend to have what would be considered by most people's standards excessively large, unplanned families.
Have way too many cars per residence parked both on the lawn and the street.
Make noise at all hours of the night.
Many times move way too many people into a particular residence.
To those (presumably few) Mexican heritage American's who came here legally and learned the language and challenged themselves to educate themeselves and learned to assimilate our culture: great.
To the others...this is something I as an Oregonian do not want.

I live in a small town in Illinois near the Iowa border. There is a pork plant in the town I live in. In the last three years there has been an increase in the use of Spanish in the schools and all I can see is that the American kids are being forced to assimilate to benefit the Spanish. It's wrong and there must be something that can be done. I had never heard of a Mexican curriculum. I don't want my kids learning Spanish and I do want the Mexicans learning English. What can one do without being called a racist or narrowminded though?
