Doug Selby: Fictional?
This comes from KGW photojournalist Kristen Henderson, who's working the Fr. David Schwartz story tonight.
Kristen points out that "Doug Selby," the name given by the mysterious 911 caller on June 8th, is a fictitious DA who's appeared in nine novels.
Reporter Scott Burton thought the name rang a bell too. Turns out Doug Selby is also the city manager of Las Vegas.
OSP, meanwhile, continues to look for the Doug Selby who witnessed the crash.

Doug Selby may just be someone who wanted to report the accident but was too sensible to give his real name and number. I don't blame him.
I can't quite see anyone waiting in a rural area to waylay some passing car and then kill the occupants by rolling the car off the road. Its perhaps strange that seatbelts were not being used and the victim's habits should be ascertained.

There is also one listed in McMinnville on Zabasearch.com, and several listed on peoplefinder.com, including one that lists Tillamook as the town...

For all of the people that traveled hwy 26 and saw nothing, why are some faulting the rescue/police for not finding the car sooner? It doesn't take much thick greenery to obscure things. I am so sorry for the families of the deceased, however this is misdirected anger. God bless everyone involved.

I suspect that this guy was somehow involved in the accident and that's why he doesn't want to be found out.

So what we have is a citizen who gives an exemplary 911 call. As a result, some guy is contacted at his work and questioned by the police for two hours and asked to take a polygraph test. Makes me want to call in.

If the police keep harassing people - no one will want to report a crime or accident.

My thoughts have always been that it was someone who wanted to be of assistance but had troubles with the law themselves and what better way to help but under an alias, since they did give accurate information about the accident site.
One other thought that tripped through my head was did this person leave the area code of the phone number or was it just assumed it was an Oregon number?
This person will never be found because they made that choice when they made the call almost a month ago....

Good Job KGW - way to interfere with a police investigation. You call that responsible journalism?

The guy gave accurate info, and the investigation has already established that they died due to the accident-which was a single vehicle accident-sad to say, but they weren't wearing seatbelts.
I find it a horrible injustice that they are searching for Doug Selby-even hiring a Private Investigator! Why does he need to be found? I suspect that the family wants to place blame-even sue! Makes me never want to report anything...for fear of this type of treatment!

These folks died within a minute or two of the crash. The caller had to drive 11 miles to a now removed payphone. Even if the caller had stuck around to wave down another driver or returned to the scene, it wouldn't have changed anything except to save the families and friends a couple weeks of wondering and heartache. So, what difference does it make who the caller was? They saw the accident, they went to the nearest phone (which is no longer there - maybe the lack of phones along 26 should be the real story...) and called 911. Two agencies searched for a total of 40 minutes without finding the car. Short of sending up a plane or helipcopter, it doesn't look like they would have found it. Either way, the people were already dead. So once again, in this state of declining budgets, what difference does it make who the caller was?

The 'Doug Selby' that called from the pay phone sounds like an older gentleman. Could have been on vacation driving an RV as many retired folks enjoy doing. I can't locate an actual audio of the phone number he left online so I can't assume the phone number he left was a local number without knowing the area code. Perhaps he was on vacation from out of state. I would suggest a check at the RV parks along the coastal highway to see if he reserved an RV space.

That's ridiculous that they were hassling that other guy, if they have receipts to prove it and his name is Mike... sounds like the guy obviously just rattled off a fake number. Well, if there's no evidence to suggest there was another person involved in the accident, then I'm sure he's not to blame, just doesn't want to be involved apparently. I do understand the anger directed at the police for not finding the car, though. Yes, they were dead within minutes so it wouldn't have mattered, but the police didn't know that then! And it would have saved a lot of uncertainty and fear for the victims. The caller said they had gone off in a ravine (or something along those lines) so they should have known they were looking for something that might be hidden. They should have had a helicopter looking for it, if they couldn't find it initially. Sure doesn't make me feel very safe to know that if I got in an accident somewhere like that, even if I was lucky enough to have someone call 911 as quick as they could, it could still take WEEKS for me to be found. Even if I was already dead, I don't like the idea of sitting there rotting for weeks. Shame on the police for giving up so quickly, for all they knew, there may have been lives at stake, isn't that what the police are for?
