Let me begin by saying this is a sensitive topic among many people....and I fully respect and understand that. That said, I don't grasp how history can dictate and possibly manipulate schools and communities in a moments notice. I'm referring to what has been "proposed" by one former student on the Oregon coast. He's a Native American who attended a game last year with his family in Mollala. While there, he witnessed a non-Native American in an Indian headress....with a target painted on his chest. Yes, that's a tad offensive.
Now, there is a Advisory Committee in place in Salem at the office of the State Superintendent. That group will look into possibly removing the 16 schools...that have ties to Native American mascots. Anything with Warriors, Indians, Braves and Chieftains are close to changing. We won't know anything more until mid-August when the two groups meeting in Salem. I spoke with the student who told me "it's institutionalized racism"....and he wants "a better learning environment for his neices, nephews and children someday". I respect that....but I feel it should be left up to each individual community to make this massive change.

Of course... As a loyal KGW employee, I can not, in good conscience, actively encourage you to watch another channel. However, this Sunday at noon pacific time, if you say... "accidentally" drop your TV remote and it pushes you to another channel (its network's letters match the first three of the alphabet), then you might just see a pretty good football game.
Yes, I said football. In July.
Just as NFL training camps open up, the Arena Football League wraps up its season with the 21st Arenabowl, as the Columbus Destroyers take on the San Jose Sabercats.

I'll be honest....I'm getting tired of deceit, dishonesty, and malodorous behavior in sports! It's starting to wear on me. And these days, I only have 3 people to blame.
Tim Donaghy, Michael Vick and Barry Bonds. If we could just rid ourselves of these yahoo's....my job would be a little more glamorous. Tainted and reprehensible.
There are people amongst us that just 'scam' their way through life...which is an unfortunate fact. They tell you only what you want to hear....and nothing more.
These people are Donaghy, Vick and Bonds. Don't get me wrong....I like a good controversy. But these three are filthy people. Yes, nothing has been proven...and nobody has been charged. But, if you have even the slightest bit of common sense, you absolutely believe---at least in the court of public opinion---that these guys are guilty. Give me something good to talk about....my rant on bad people doing bad things is officially over!

Greetings to all of you taking a break from waiting for the last Harry Potter book (Or are you reading it already? Cheaters!). I won't lie...I'm pretty excited too. With that in mind, I figured I should talk about one sports question on the minds of many Harry Potter fans: Would Quidditch work in the real world?

Okay, that felt kinda weird writing that title! Thanks to the success of OSU (and ONLY that)....the Ducks are bringing back collegiate baseball for the first time since 1981. Thanks for joining the party Pat Kilkenny. The timing couldn't be better....and more laughable. (I'll explain the "laughable" part in a moment). Actually, it's a good thing for UO and the entire state. It will bring another prominent Civil War matchup into households throughout the state. And I do feel bad for the wrestling program....but let's be honest, it's all about making money. And, the Ducks--in a few years--will see the returns on baseball MUCH MORE than they would on wrestling. Unfortunately, we live in a world where to get something, you must give up something.
When I said "laughable"....I just thought about how OSU students, alums, athletes viewed this move. I must admit...it'll be strange when the program gets underway.
I hope Oregon does well....because the state is obviously on the map.

We're technically a little more than half-way through the baseball season. However, the All-Star break traditionally marks the midseason point, separating the serious contenders from the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles. As the second half gets underway here in 2007, Mariners fans can rejoice. After three years in last place, Seattle is a serious contender. However, what most people don't think about is that this year's success can be linked to a decision made three years ago.

Wednesday is every sports guy's worst nightmare. Its the slowest sports day of the year. Its one of only two days on the calendar, where there isn't a single professional, or college sporting event. December 24th can be equally brutal, but usually there is some football news to talk about.
Wednesday is the day after the All Star game. There are no baseball games. No golf tournaments. There's just nothing. Sorry cycling fans, the Tour De France doesn't count.
Luckily there is a summer league game for the Blazers. But if Oden isn't playing, does anyone really care.
Trying to fill a three minute sportscast can be painful. All we can do is sit back, and hope that Mike Tyson bites somebody. Or hope news breaks that Pete Rose is betting on his grandkid's little league games. Or hope that Takeru Kobayashi will call a surprise news conference to announce he's retiring.
So stay tuned, and find out what we come up with.

Sonics owner Clay Bennett and new general manager Sam Presti aren't making any friends in Seattle. In fact, it almost looks as if they are trying to alienate Seattle fans.
There's no doubt now, this is going to be a messy breakup.
It all started this spring, when the Washington legislature decided to end their session without taking up the issue of a new arena. The next day, Bennett all but called on the Mayflower trucks, and started the move to Oklahoma City. He admitted he'd given up the fight.
The next unpopular move, the trade that sent fan favorite Ray Allen to Boston. Presti referred to Allen's age several times as a factor in the decision. I can only wonder when Ray's first issue of AARP magazine will show up in his mailbox. He is 31 you know.
Then on Tuesday, the agent of Rashard Lewis announced that the all-star forward was planning to sign with the Orlando Magic. Sure, Presti met with Lewis, and possibly even offered him a contract, but clearly they didn't make a very good pitch.
To top it all off, the Sonics are going to hire PJ Carlesimo as head coach. Former Sonics assistant Dwayne Casey was the overwhelming choice of the fans.
Sonics message boards are flooded, with posts slamming the decision.
PJ doesn't seem like the right fit for a team filled with young players.
Its become more than obvious, management isn't trying to win anyone over.
They want a fresh start, with a low payroll, in a new city.
Its unfortunate, fans should be celebrating the gift the NBA handed the Sonics in Kevin Durant.
Instead they'll simply get a one year preview of the team that most Seattle fans will be rooting against, the minute they roll out of town.
