THE RING IS THE THING!

By Joe Becker

You hear all the athletes talk about it. Winning the ring. It doesn't matter the sport...it's about winning that championship ring. Michael Jordan won six with the Chicago Bulls...as did Scottie Pippen. Robert Horry also has six, but he has won his with three different teams. He won two with the Rockets, three with the Lakers and one more with the Spurs.

Bill Russell is the all-time leader as a player with 11 NBA Championship Rings. He won them in just 13 seasons...and two came as a player-coach. Russell also won two NCAA titles at San Francisco and an Olympic Gold Medal in 1956.

Former NBA Star Charles Barkley never won an NBA Championship...however, he did play on the greatest team in basketball history. Barkley won an Olympic Gold Medal with the Original and only Dream Team in 1992.

Legendary Celtics coach Red Auerbach won 9 titles on the bench, a record equaled by Lakers Coach Phil Jackson. What most people don't know is that Jackson also won two rings with the Knicks as a player. The Knicks won titles in 1970 and 73. Jackson didn't play a game during the 69-70 season because of an injury...but was a member of the Knicks and did get a ring giving him a total of 11.

However, Auerbach won seven rings as an executive with the Celtics giving him 16 total. The Ring is the thing and Red is the King.
