The Moos is Loose

If you see something real shiny flying over the state of Oregon it's Bill Moos' golden parachute.

Moos can say all he wants about spending time with his family, and it might be true, after all he has 5 children. But when you read between the lines and also read his Termination Agreement you can speculate that these big time donors at the University of Oregon were going to make it real easy for Moos to leave.

This story was first reported by the Eugene Register Guard.

I also obtained a copy of this Termination Agreement from the U of O but since I got it faxed to me I have posted a link to the Register Guard.

http://www.registerguard.com/news/2006/11/29/images/release.pdf

The interesting part is the Non Compete Clause.

The University of Oregon and these donors don't want Moos showing up in a couple years at a Pac 10 school. But if he wants to go back to the University of Montana ( a non BCS school), that would be ok.

Enjoy the read.

Jermaine O'Neal

Had a nice conversation with Jermaine O'Neal prior to tonight's game with the Blazers. Jermaine told me that he doesn't like to talk about what happened with him in Portland because he is grateful that Bob Whitsitt drafted him and he had the opportunity to grow as a person here. He says he also grew as a player, but never was able to showcase his talents. I asked him perhaps the mistake was not in playing him, but rather in drafting him in the first place because Portland already had Brian Grant and Rasheed Wallace ahead of him.

Jermaine considers Portland his second home. He said he is still amazed that people recognize him and wish him well. He said he went to a restaurant last night and people were saying they wished he was still a Blazer.

If you want to hear what Jermaine had to say you will have to watch Sports Sunday this Sunday night after the NFL game.

Jermaine is definitely the one that got away. He's turned into a great player.

Catch up time

Time to catch up on a couple of former Blazers. First Sebastian Telfair and an ailment I have never heard of before.

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2006/11/12/cause_of_ailment_unknown/

Next... Bonzi Wells is getting under the skin of another NBA coach. What a few months it's been for Wells. He turns down a 6 year 36 million dollar contract with Sacramento. Then he finds out that no one else really wants him. He fires his agent. Then he signs with Houston. Now check out this article for an update.

http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/sports/basketball/15989086.htm

Former Blazer Jermaine O'Neal will be in town tomorrow. Every time Jermaine comes back to town people wonder what if. But you have to realize that when Jermaine was here Rasheed Wallace and Brian Grant were ahead of him in the power forward rotation. So the mistake wasn't about Jermaine and his lack of playing time. Maybe the mistake was drafting him in the first place.

Jermaine is considering doing a sit down interview with me tomorrow before the game. I'm hoping he says yes. I've always had a great relationship with him. But a lot has changed and Jermaine has a lot on his plate these days. I'm hoping he is the same Jermaine as he was when he was a Blazer.

If I get the interview I will update this blog in the next 24-36 hours.

Civil War Wrap

Another year and another classic Civil War - Oregon State wins it 30-28. This one went right down to the wire, and the team that executed best won. Look at the statistics; they were pretty similar for both teams, except in one category - special teams. And for the second week in a row, special teams ended up being Oregon's downfall.
Oregon would have won comfortably if its special teams had produced. Two missed field goals in the first half would have given the Ducks six more points. Along with a blocked extra point, special teams miscues took the equivalent of a touchdown off the board for Oregon. Had they been able to sock away those seven points, they never would have needed a last-minute field goal attempt to try to win it.
At that point, Oregon coach Mike Bellotti had so little confidence in his special teams that he benched his first-string kicker and brought in a little-used backup to try and win the Civil War. That's how bad things had gotten for Oregon.
So now the streak is at ten. For the last ten years, the home team has won every Civil War. Now it'll be up to the Beavers to try to break that streak in Eugene next year. First, though, Oregon has to try to change its momentum with a strong performance in a bowl game. It'll have plenty of time to think about its not-so-special teams in the meantime.

Civil War Blog -- Live From Reser Stadium

Hey there -- I'm Rich Kurz, a sports producer at KGW, and I'm in the press box at Reser Stadium for the 110th Civil War. Game time's less than 15 minutes away for this big game with plenty on the line. The home team has won the last nine games in the series. Check back - I'll be updating often, and be sure to send me your comments!

12:36 pm

First big news out of Corvallis -- the Ducks are going with Brady Leaf at QB over previous starter Dennis Dixon. We'll have to see how that changes the Ducks offensive gameplan.

12:45

Just the start the Beavs wanted -- Ducks turn it over, Beavs recover, then cheers erupt for completion on first pass for OSU.

12:47

That didn't take long -- Beavs hit Jason Vandiver for his first career TD. How's a guy get that open that close to the endzone?

12:53
That big 33-yard pass play for the Ducks didn't quiet the crowd at all -- they went nuts when OSU got in there and nailed Leaf on the very next. And it's getting a bit chippy - offsetting personal fouls on that play.

12:57pm
Quick note on the fans -- the only empty seats in the house appear to be in the corner of the end zone where the Ducks fans are. That section is about three-quarters full. The rest of the stadium is packed with Beaver orange. Most of that orange is raingear; in true Civil War-fashion, a nice steady, light rain is falling.

1:06pm
OSU is losing the chance to build some momentum -- two false starts in the same handfull of plays. After converting a big third down on a screen to Bernard, they're shooting themselves in the foot. It's loud in here, but you'd think the Beavs could block out their own fans.

1:10pm
Another big third down play for the Beavs -- and another big penalty on OSU. A personal foul after about a 30-yard gain; think these teams like each other?

1:13pm
The turnover doesn't dim the fans hopes; the crowd noise was rocking the pressbox as the Ducks try to get points off the OSU turnover. But it's a momentum killer - a pass down to the UO 41-yard line, then the receiver coughs it up.

1:19pm
This is the best the Ducks offense has looked on the road in a while. For a guy who hasn't played a whole lot, Leaf looks really comfortable and relaxed in the pocket.

1:20pm
The catch that's under review is down in the corner of the end zone where I'm sitting. From here, I thought it looked like a touchdown, but those refs are a whole lot closer to the play than I am.

1:23pm
TD Ducks! They didn't use Jonathan Stewart a whole lot until they got down inside the 20, then he battered away at the D until he got into the end zone. We've got a tie game with 2:19 left in the first quarter.

1:35pm
Alexis Serna hits a long FG to give OSU a 10-7 lead; it was hard to tell if it was going to be long enough from up here. The Beavs put some points on the board, but the Ducks "D" seems like it's getting into a rhythm. After that early touchdown, they've really been getting after the Beavs. It feels like we're just getting past that early part of the game when all the emotion is running, and now it's just down to who the better football team is.

1:41pm
WOW! A HUGE gamechanger --- what was Leaf thinking? Derrick Doggett picks him off, then runs nearly untouched to the end zone to give the Beavs a 17-7 lead. I'm not sure if Leaf thought he had a good angle after the pick, but it didn't look like he was in any hurry to try to tackle Doggett. That's what the Beavs needed to keep their emotions high!

1:50pm
Leaf is right back in the game after throwing that INT. I'd heard UO Coach Bellotti say he'd play both QB's, but Dixon hasn't gotten off the bench yet. And boy is it loud -- Beaver Nation was yelling so hard on that fourth down play, the photographer's deck was shaking!

1:54pm
Not going well for the Ducks -- they drive on OSU, only to miss a short field goal. And THAT comes after the Ducks run Jeremiah Johnson right up the middle on 3rd and short. I'm surprised to see Jonathan Stewart turned into a goal-line only RB. He's the guy you'd think would get the ball a lot more.

1:58pm
Love that Civil War weather! The rain has picked up and the fog is moving in. It's just about 2pm, but it looks like dusk is just minutes away.

2:01pm
Can you feel the love? Ducks DE Nick Reed loses his head -- ok, his helmet -- on the play, and a whole bunch of players from both sides do a little pushing and shoving afterwards, but the Ducks are the only ones to get a 15-year personal foul penalty.

2:04pm
50-yd FG attempt for Alexis Serna -- and he hits it. You can't exactly say he nailed it (in fact, it just squeaked over the bottom corner of the goalpost), but like my old baseball coach would've said, it was a line drive in the scorebook.

2:06pm
Wow -- and ANOTHER big play. What runback for Jonathan Stewart. He hesitated bringing the kickoff out of the endzone, then put a sick move on a defender en route to a 68-yard return. The Ducks now have a chance to get some points with :17 left in the half.

2:10pm
Man -- the Ducks have gotta be hurting. Special teams are killing them again. A second, short FG missed to end the half. They should be down a TD, but are now down 13. At least they haven't had the chance to drop a punt yet (like the bunch they muffed last week).
All right - hit the fridge and grab some grub, then send me your comments during halftime.

2:33pm
Ducks "D" rises to the occasion -- and the special teams manages to field a punt. But can the "O" put it in the end zone so it doesn't have to rely on a FG attempt again?

2:38pm
The long bomb to Jordan Kent is under review, but either way, you've gotta respect the long ball Brady Leaf throws. Seems like it's almost effortless. That's been the first play in a while that's stretched either team.

2:41pm
Tick-tick-tick... the long reviews are rough at home, but rougher when you're sitting in the rain. Tough on the players, too -- a bunch of the Ducks were jumping around and stretching to try to stay loose for a call that took forever for the refs to review and say they'd gotten it right to begin with.

2:42pm
So now the Ducks decide to give Stewart the ball outside the red zone, and he pounds away on the Beavs, taking it 22 yards into the endzone to bring UO within six points. I'd expect to see a whole lot more of J-Stew this half.

2:44pm
It's either great tailgaters or the cold rain, but the stands look a whole lot emptier this half. The upper deck across from the pressbox is about half-full here in the third-quarter.

2:49pm
Moore has a big arm of his own -- a 48-yard catch and run for the Beavs down to the UO 9-yard line. The offenses are starting to stretch the D a bit.

2:51pm
Bernard into the endzone to extend the Beavs lead -- nice blocking, followed by *ANOTHER* personal foul penalty. It's becoming the Un-civil War. Beavs up 27-14.

2:56pm
Another big play from Stewart, converting on third and short. Was Bellotti keeping him fresh for the second half to throw at worn-out Beaver defenders?

3:00pm
Update on the weather -- at half-time I ran into a soaked-to-the bone Ron Pivo and equally-wet ace sports photographer Brian Warner. One look at them was all I needed to know I should be glad to be inside and not out in the rain.

3:09pm
A new Reser Stadium record for attendance - 44,015. It's the first sell-out since the new east grandstand opened last season.

3:17pm
12:31 left in the game -- Oregon's quickly running out of time to make this a game. The Duck offense has really struggled to find a flow.... they have managed to keep big-play man Sammie Stroughter from beating them on punts.

3:21pm
Late flag for pass interference comes after a loud roar from the crowd looking for that penalty. Another error that's going to cost the Ducks some time off the clock -- at the least.

3:25pm
Ok - this is about the third entry I started writing "The Beavs are gonna keep feeding Bernard and kill clock...." and then Matt Moore drops back as I type. I really thought they'd keep running a bit, and see if they can't kill some clock and get a first down.

3:27pm
There's gonna be some trouble out of this -- at the end of the punt coverage, two players were wrestling on the Oregon sidelines, and it looked like the Duck player threw a punch somewhat south of the stomach. Refs didn't call it, but everybody up in the pressbox saw it.

3:33pm
What a gun -- Brady Leaf just threw a 45-yard bomb that was broken up, but he threw it from one side of the field to the next.

3:34pm
Leaf missed Weatherspoon on that one - he was wide open crossing to the left side of the endzone.

3:39pm
Can you say... "Special-teams implosion?" Stewart steamrolls into the end zone, then the Ducks get the PAT blocked. That kick team has been a total disaster for Oregon. Two missed field goals and a blocked extra point are the seven points Oregon is now trailing by; make those and it's a tie game.
But the Ducks O looks like it's getting into rhythm with Stewart bringing the wood to the running game.

3:43pm
This is what it's all about -- one TD game with 4:42 left. Down to the wire at Reser!

3:45pm
Loud boos are banging off the rafters at Reser -- no doubt, the fans disagreed that a broken-up pass was incomplete, not caught and fumbled. But it woke the crowd up to cause the Ducks to jump offsides -- and now the Beavs are urging the crowd to ramp it up even louder.

3:47pm
Man -- what an effort by Jonathan Stewart. That guy just broke about four tackles and ran 25 yards laterally for an 11-yard gain and a first down.

3:51pm
Brady Leaf on the keeper to put Oregon up two -- either Bellotti has *NO* faith in his kicker, or he's betting the house today. Having Leaf run it on the keeper for the 2-point conversion is a risk to be sure. On the other, maybe no more risky than running Martinez out for another kick.
There's only one section of the stands cheering now -- the side wearing bright yellow raincoats. It almost seems like the Ducks needed a little extra pressure to kick it into gear.

3:53pm
Now Matt Moore has to answer -- and he is. Two completions to start the drive, totalling 45 yards. The Beavs are stepping it up. What a game!

3:56pm
Beavs are now trying to run some clock, but they're only at the UO 24-yard line. That's well within the Serna's range, but is it too early to run down the clock? And wouldn't you want to try punching it in the end zone, the way the O is clicking?

3:57pm
The chess match continues. OSU runs to the middle, which would make a field goal easier. UO calls its final timeout to stop the clock, and leave some time to try to answer any Beaver score.

3:59pm
The fans go nuts! Serna splits the uprights with a 40-yard field goal to give OSU a 30-28 lead. But remember -- Oregon got a great runback to end the first half and get within FG range

4:00pm
*Another great return by Stewart; he bobbled the ball, then busted it to the left and down to the 43-yard line of Oregon State. The fans are trying to disrupt the Oregon offense.

4:03pm
Now it all comes down to this -- a 44-yard field goal attempt. And Bellotti goes with the second-string kicker. Talk about pressure!

4:05pm
BLOCKED!!!!! OSU is going to win the 110th Civil War with a block of an Oregon field goal attempt with :20 left.
The fans storm the field -- and celebrate the big win!
Hope you guys enjoyed the game as much as I did -- thanks for reading along. We'll see you next time -- Rich

More on Mike

IT IS CIVIL WAR WEEK.

LET ME START IT OFF THIS WAY.

THIS MAY BE CRAZY, THIS MAY SOUND UNCONVENTIONAL, BUT IF THE BEAVERS BEAT THE DUCKS OREGON STATE HEAD FOOTBALL COACH MIKE RILEY HAS TO BE NAMED PAC 10 COACH OF THE YEAR.

RILEY AND THE BEAVERS STARTED OFF PAC 10 PLAY 0-2.

AFTER THEIR LOSS TO WASHINGTON STATE A LOT OF BEAVER FANS DIDN'T THINK O-S-U WOULD WIN ANOTHER GAME.

MAYBE THEY WOULD BEAT STANFORD BUT THAT'S IT.

RILEY HAS TURNED THIS SHIP AROUND IN MID CRUISE. FIVE WINS IN THEIR LAST 6 GAMES.

IF OREGON STATE BEATS OREGON IN THE CIVIL WAR THE BEAVS ARE IN THIRD PLACE ALL ALONE AND HEADED FOR THE SUN BOWL.

NOT BAD FOR A TEAM THAT WASN'T PICKED HIGHER THAN SIXTH IN ANY PRE SEASON POLL.

YOUR COMMENTS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.

What's the Internet ?

Larry King has had a wildly successful career. He had a radio show in Florida for a long time and his show on CNN has brought him riches beyond his wildest dreams.

But I've always wondered what the fascination is with him. Charlie Rose is a far better interviewer and far more knowledgable.

I would watch 10 Barabra Walters sit down interviews before I would watch one Larry King interview.

I just think those two people do a better job.

Now here's the topper.

Larry King has never used the internet. He admitted it during an interview with Rosanne Barr. Barr was actually the guest and it was King who was answering the internet question.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,229898,00.html

The internet has become part of the fabric of America. It's like the telephone. I understand people who don't understand something. It's really intimidating at first. But it's the internet. It's not like learning how to play the trombone.

My mom and dad are apprehensive about the internet. That's fine. But Larry King has to do reaearch when he interviews people doesn't he ?

Anyways... not a sports subject.

Just thought I would exercise my fingers.

Found this item floating around the internet. Thought it was hilarious.

ACTUAL AD IN THE CLASSIFFIED.

Another example of what happens when a man thinks on his own.

06' Suzuki GSXR 1000. $10,000. This bike is perfect! It has 1000 miles and has had its 500-mile dealer service. (Expensive) It's been adult ridden, all wheels have always been on the ground. I use it as a cruiser/commuter. I'm selling it because it was purchased without proper consent of a loving wife. Apparently "Do whatever the Hell you want" doesn't mean what I thought.

The L.A. Story

A weekend to forget for both the Ducks and the Beavers. Both teams still had a chance at halftime. Beavers up 7-6 and Ducks down 14-0.

So if you're an Oregon or Oregon State fan you probably looked up Sunday morning and saw the sky was falling.

It's predictable. That's what college football fans do.

You see there's only 12 or 13 college football games a year so when your team loses it really stings. Some fans want their coaches fired (firemikeriley.com), and some people want a quarterback change (see Canzano's column).

In the NBA it's not as bad. If the Blazers go on a 4 game losing streak no one wants Nate McMillan fired.

But that's the beauty of college football. Every game is huge. Every game takes on a life of it's own. Games get broken down and re-lived for 6 days. Then it's time to do the same to the next game.

Now back to the Beavers and Ducks.

Big week once again for them both.

Oregon finishes at home against Arizona and on the road at Reser. Two wins is a possibility. But then again I wouldn't be stunned if Oregon goes 1-1.

Oregon State finishes with Stanford (on the road), Oregon, and at Hawaii.

Maybe 2-1... but then again 0-3 could happen.

Once again the beauty of college football is the fact that every week brings with it a different set of circumstances and possibilities.

Game on.

Zach Randolph

I said on the air last night that Zach Randolph is not only making a play for the all-star team, but at this rate he would have to be considered an MVP candidate.

Obviously 5 games into the season is a bit premature on both fronts. However, if he is still performing at this clip in a couple months I think national media members may start echoing those sentiments.

Now comes the big BUT.

But Zach has to show everyone, inside and outside of Portland, that he has grown both on and off the court.

MVP candidtaes don't have scrapes with the law.

MVP candidates don't show up late for work.

Zach has been guilty of both those things in the past.

If he truly has turned a corner those things will be a thing of the past and Randolph will get all the accolades he deserves.

If he reverts back to the Zach of old he will never get the things he covets most.

An All Star game invite.

Being a team leader.

And leading the Blazers back into the playoffs.

Your comments are always welcome.

The Los Angeles Forty Niners

So I'm sitting at my desk and I see this come down on the news wire.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The San Francisco 49ers ended negotiations
with the city about building a new stadium and plan to move to
either Santa Clara or somewhere else in California, The Associated
Press learned Wednesday night.

Surprised... yes.

Even though we're an hour plane ride away I didn't realize that the city and the niners were at the end of the line.

It just goes how insulated we are. Not people in Portland necessarily, but anywhere you live. Sometimes if you don't come up for air in your daily life you don't know what's going on. Even in a city just 700 miles away.

What's next for the Niners. Take a guess.

The Niners will start playing "Where Will We Move ?"

It will play city vs city and see where it gets the best deal.

This type of scenario is going on everywhere. People in Seattle didn't exactly give the new owners what they wanted in Tuesday elections.

The same can be said in Sacramento where voters aren't putting their money where their team is. Check out this from the San Jose Mercury News.

SACRAMENTO - Sacramento civic leaders said Wednesday that they'll try again in two years to convince voters to help pay for a sports arena to revitalize a vacant railroad yard and the city's downtown.

Only in passing did they mention the arena would help keep the Sacramento Kings professional basketball team in town.

Look what happened in Portland over the summer when the Blazers met with the city. Mayor Potter said we'd like you to stay but we have no money to help you out.

The same theme is running rampant all over the country.

Gimme the Mike

A COUPLE WEEKS AGO I DID AN INTERVIEW WITH THE PERSON WHO RUNS THE WEB-SITE http://www.firemikeriley.com

WE HAD THE STORY READY TO GO.

BUT NOW AFTER 4 STRAIGHT WINS THE STORY WILL NOT SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY.

IN FACT IF THERE'S ANYONE WILLING TO BUY THE DOMAIN http://www.givemikerileyanextension.com WE'D LIKE TO TALK TO YOU.

RILEY ISN'T THE BEST COACH IN THE WORLD, HIS 3-18 RECORD AGAINST RANKED TEAMS IS EVIDENT OF THAT, BUT SOMETIMES THE BALL BOUNCES YOUR WAY AND SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T.

THEN AGAIN SOMETIMES THE RELAYS GO YOUR WAY AND SOMETIMES THEY DON'T.

MIKE BELLOTTI RECENTLY HAD A 3 YEAR STRETCH WHERE HE WAS A MEDIOCRE 20-17.

NOW HE'S THE TOAST OF EUGENE.

Brandon Roy

I can't think of too many athletes who get all hyped up and then are actually better than advertised.

Lebron James is one that comes to mind. He came into the NBA with more hype and accolades than any player ever. Come to think of it, any athlete of all time. But he delivered and will continue do do so.

Back to Roy.

Did you see what he did to the Sonics in his first pro game ?

Unbelievable.

There was a point in the game when his teammates, guys who've been in the league for a few years, were actually deferring to him

What does that tell you.

Here's a guy who thought of entering the NBA out of high schol. He not only went to college, but stayed for all four years.

Look at the type of player that he is in just his first pro game. He is NBA ready.

I asked him a couple weeks ago about his demeanor and the fact that he reminds me of Tim Duncan. He has the same confidence on the court and the same swagger.

He said it comes from playing at a big-time college and he feels playing in the Pac 10 really prepared him for the NBA.

After one game who can argue.

Blazers Season Preview

Not a whole lot is expected from this year's team. The national media is really down on it.

But that's fine.

The national media thought the Tigers would walk all over the Cardinals in the World Series.

I think the Blazers are like a ball of clay, and Nate McMillan is slowly molding it into the team he wants it to be. Whoever is on board will be here for the long run. Whoever Nate doesn't want here will either not be playing, or wearing another uniform in the next year or so.

I think the Blazers will improve about 7-8 wins this year. Maybe another 7-8 the next year. Then in 2-3 years they should be competing for a playoff spot.

But this was the year the Blazers should have been making their move.

After the 2003-04 season the Blazers window of opportunity for making the playoffs was pretty much over. They should have committed to go young. Instead they signed Zach Randolph to a 84 million dollar deal, Darius Miles got 48 million, and Theo Ratliff inked a 3 year deal at 33 million.

The youth movement went away like a pair of Jordache pants

I had one NBA executive tell me that the Randolph, Miles, and Ratliff signings set this franchise back 5-10 years. Instead of just going young, the Blazers thought they still had a chance to make the playoffs.

They are now going through the growing pains they should have gone through 3 years ago.

Trading away Ratliff this off-season got his contract off the books. But the Blazers had to take on Raef LaFrentz's contract which is in the 33 million dollar neighborhood.

That's called a push.

Molding an NBA team into a playoff contender isn't easy. There's a lot of guesswork and a lot of luck.

But you have to commit to a direction and go with it. This is something I don't think the Blazers have done until now.

So instead of thinking playoffs this season, we're still a couple years away.

I don't see the Blazers turning it around like the Suns did a few years ago when they got Steve Nash.

It's simply because the Blazers are over the Salary Cap and they can't be players in the free agent market for a couple years.

Check back in April.
