September 22, 2006Gone FishingNext entry September 29th September 20, 2006Attention Beaver FansSo you're an Oregon State fan or alum or a big time booster. Dennis Erickson is at the University of Idaho looking around and trying to figure out what has happened to his coaching career. If he has the slightest success every Athletic Director is going to be knocking down his door. Flash to Corvallis where boosters are getting a little antsy over the future of the Oregon State program. A drubbing at Boise State doesn't get anyone reaching for their checkbook to give the Athletic Department any money. So here's the question Oregon State people. Will you root against Mike Riley and the Beavers this season in the hope that AD Bob DeCarolis fires him and goes after Dennis Erickson ? Look at how this letter to the editor from last Sunday's Oregonian begins," The dirty little secret making its way through Beaver Nation is that many Beavers fans wouldn't mind another 5-6 season it if meant the end of the (Mike) riley regime and the rebirth of another (Dennis) Erickson era." It's a difficult proposition I know. I like Mike Riley a lot. I want him to have success. Riley gave you guys a great win in the Insight Bowl against Notre Dame a couple years back. I was there. I've known Mike for 10 years. I covered the Beavers starting in 1996 when I worked at KMTR in Eugene. Back then no one, and I mean no one, was covering the Beavers football practices. I was. Erickson got you thisclose to a national title. Will you root against your team and/or alma mater for one season thinking that maybe, just maybe, Erickson would return. It's just a question meant to cause debate. That's all. Now it's your turn. It Goes Both WaysThanks to Tim for sending me this link. Oklahoma and its fans should feel pretty lucky to have escaped week one with a win against Alabama-Birmingham. You will have to copy and paste this one. http://www.jcdenton40.com/UABScrewed.wmv It's No HolidayTHERE IS ONLY ONE THING TO DO TO STRAIGHTEN THIS WHOLE MESS OUT. HAVE THE DUCKS AND SOONERS PLAY IN A BOWL GAME. I KNOW THEY FACED EACHOTHER IN THE HOLIDAY BOWL LAST YEAR BUT LAST TIME I CHECKED CIRCUMSTANCES HAVE CHANGED. IF E-S-P-N WANTS A RATINGS GRABBER FORGET THE ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS CHAMPIONSHIP, AND THE DART CHAMPIONSHIPS CAN WAIT. I GUARANTEE THE ENTIRE SPORTS WORLD WOULD BE WATCHING THIS GAME. I KNOW IT SOUNDS CRAZY BUT THINK ABOUT IT. IT COULD BE LIKE A BOXING MATCH. THEY COULD EVEN NAME IT. CALL IT "SETTLE THE SCORE" DUCKS-SOONERS PART 2. IT WOULD BE AN "INSTANT" CLASSIC... GET IT... September 19, 2006More Oklahoma-OregonIt just won't go away... Sooners fans take their football seriously... and they also don't mind making a buck or two from this situation. There's already a web site devoted to the game and the officials calls... and if you click the link at the left of the site you can also buy a t-shirt. By the way I take a large. Ron September 18, 2006It's Not OKI don't care if you root for the Ducks or not a bad call is a bad call is a bad call. There were a couple big ones at the end of the Oregon / Oklahoma game Saturday. The one that everyone is talking about dumfounds me. How can 7 officials, 2 or 3 officials in the replay booth, and then the entire crew of ABC Sports completely whiff ? All they were concerned with was who touched the ball and when ? I know that's a major part of the equation, but didn't anyone have the smarts to also ask who receovered the ball ? Let's say Oklahoma touched the ball before the ball traveled 10 yards ? Which I don't think happened. Who ended up with the ball ? It wasn't the Ducks and it wasn't close. Now for some Oklahoma humor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlXgbKPUFt8
September 14, 2006Viking QuestEvery year during college football season you hear so many teams criticized for playing a weak schedule. Some schools like staying at home, playing weak teams, collecting the paychecks, and don't worry about strength of schedule. To them it's more important being bowl eligible than going on the road to play a tough team. Not Portland State. PSU is the type of team Division One schools on the west coast like to play. They know the vikings won't turn down the opportunity and more times than not you can count on a Tim Walsh team giving your team a good game. I love the fact that the Vikings don't run away from challenges. It brings the progam respect it wouldn't otherwise have. When you recruit kids, telling them you are playing New Mexico, Cal, and Oregon in the same season gives these players the opportunity to play against some of the best college players on the west coast, if not the country. How many scouts go to a Portland State / Northern Colorado game ? Not many. How many will be at the Portland State / Cal game this weekend ? A lot. Walsh has tolled the dice many times. His win in Hawaii a few years ago was one of the biggest in school history. The win a couple weeks agao at New Mexico was probably number two. Football programs and people don't grow unless they step outside the box. Tim Walsh and Portland State are doing that and I applaud them for doing so. Your comments are always weclome and yes the title of this blog was stolen from "Entourage". Ron September 12, 2006Coming... Sooners or Later...For years some of the elite college football teams wouldn't venture to the state of Oregon. But in 2003 Michigan paid the Ducks a visit. Being on the sidelines, seeing the Wolverines come out was a real strange experience. Strange because teams like that never came to Autzen or Reser Stadium. There is a simple explanation and it has to do with money. Teams like Oklahoma and Michigan only play 3 (sometimes 4) non-conference games. They never wanted to waste a trip to a place like Eugene or Corvallis where the stadiums held 40,000 people. They could simply play at home against XYZ University, fill the stadium with 80,00 people and make a ton of money. Now that ABC is picking up Oregon games, and now that Oregon has 50,000 people in the stadium it finally makes financial sense to come to Eugene. That's the Ducks. The Beavers are a different story. I had an Athletic Director tell me how hard it is for Oregon State to get good teams to come to Corvallis. Seriously, what's in it for an opposing team ? A team from the midwest, for example, has no fan base, no alumni, and doesn't recruit in Corvallis. What's the motivation for playing a game there ? Money ? No way. They could drive a couple hours and get paid more by playing at Ohio State, Michigan, or any other place. Charters to Eugene aren't cheap. Oregon State has tried to do 2 for 1 games with some of these big time schools and they have said no. I remember Kansas State wanted the Beavers to go there a few years ago with no home game in return. Former AD Mitch Barnhart said no way. The next time you wonder why these teams you see on tv aren't coming our way, now you know. Your comments are always welcome Ron September 11, 2006The T.O. WatchPhilly fans need to get over Terrell Owens. A Philadelphia Sports Talk station is taking listeners guesses as to when Terrell Owens will have his first blow up with the Cowboys and Bill Parcells. In fact you can go to their web site and take a guess. I don't know if there's a prize involved. But if there is, you have to split it with me. Kareem Abdul-Ja-GarbageI'm kind of a neat freak. I like things tidy. I constantly take out the trash and try to keep things orderly in my house. But I would never go to the lengths Kareem Abdul Jabbar did. Kareem... there are places called dumps. There's also things called trash cans. It looks like the block party won't be happening this year. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/gossip/story/451313p-379875c.html September 10, 2006Smells Like Reggie BushI'm a Reggie Bush fan like everyone else. No, I don't have a poster over my bed. Wouldn't go over well with the wife. I also don't think she would want me smelling like Reggie Bush. Then again maybe she would. Have you ever been in an NBA locker room ? Those guys smell good. They can afford to buy some of the most expesnive cologne in the world. An NBA locker room actually smells like a Nordstrom counter. It's not half bad. Bush has a line of cologne out right now. Check it out. http://www.nola.com/sports/t-p/index.ssf?/base/sports-25/1157695468239090.xml&coll=1&thispage=3 Ron September 7, 2006Beavers in BoiseI'm sure a lot of Beavers fans are going to be jumping off the bandwagon. After all OSU has a bye week so there will be plenty of time to talk about this humiliating loss. I never think a team is as good as its best win and as bad as its worst loss. But I do think there are issues that have to be addressed. Oregon State's secondary was one of the worst in the country last year and now it appears this year's rushing defense will rival it. Ian Johnson--- 240 yards rushing. What's going to happen when the Beavers play Marshaun Lynch ? Ouch... But keep one thing in mind. When Oregon went to the Rose Bowl it started the season by beating Portland State by 42 points and then losing to Hawaii by 20 and losing to Utah (when Utah wasn't all that good) by 18 points. Who could have seen that team going to the Rose Bowl ? I'm not predicting similar things for this year's Oregon State team, but we're only two games into the season. Relax. September 5, 2006Welcome to FresnoFRESNO STATE HEAD COACH PAT HILL'S MOTTO IS... ANYONE, ANY PLACE,TIME. THE REASON HE HAS THAT MOTTO IS FOR THE SIMPLE REASON THAT BIG TIME SCHOOLS JUST DON'T PLAY "AT" FRESNO. FRESNO ALMOST ALWAYS HAS TO GO ON THE ROAD TO PLAY THESE SO-CALLED BIG TIME SCHOOLS. HOME AND HOME IS LIKE A FOREIGN CONCEPT. WASHINGTON, KANSAS STATE, TENNESSEE, WISCONSIN, COLORADO WERE ALL AWAY GAMES FOR THE BULLDOGS WITH NO HOME GAME IN RETURN, AS IS CUSTOMARY IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL. OREGON AND OREGON STATE GO TO FRESNO. GOOD FOR THEM. IT'S A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT. IT'S USUALLY 90 DEGREES AND THAT INCREASES THE RISK OF INJURY. I GIVE THE DUCKS A LOT OF CREDIT FOR MAKING THE TRIP BECAUSE IT'S A TRIP A LOT OF TEAMS NEVER TAKE. Here's a side note. KGW (myself and Sports Photographer Brian Warner) traveled to Fresno for the Beavers season opener in 2001 when OSU was Sports Illustrated's pre-season number one team. We got a ride from a tv photographer and I asked him what Fresno is like. I am not kidding. He proceeded to tell me that Fresno just was named murder capital of the nation. He went on to tell me that because of so many gangs in the area they started to have a lot of execution-style killings. However, after doing a little research I have found that Fresno's crime rate is at or below the national level, and has been that way for the past 6 years. In one statistical survey that was done in 2001 the murder rate in New Orleans was 20 murders per 10,000 residents. In comparison Fresno's murder rate was only 5.3 murders per 100,000 residents. Crime stats. Who knew I would some day turn into a city beat reporter ? But it is a real tough place to play. The fans are rude (but I guess that's how it is in 99 percent of the college stadiums). The one thing I remember is the heat. Not just the heat, but there wasn't any wind, so it made it even hotter. The Ducks have gone to places like Mississippi and Houston in recent years and have fared well. I don't think the weather will be a factor. I saw Fresno play Nevada last week. The Bulldogs aren't that great against the run. I like the Ducks in a shootout (pardon the pun). 44-38 September 4, 2006Andre the GiantIF YOU SPENT THE WEEKEND MAKING SMORES AND WEREN'T NEAR A T-V SET YOU MISSED ONE OF THE MOST EMOTIONAL MOMENTS IN SPORTS HISTORY. ANDRE AGASSI PLAYING THE FINAL MATCH OF HIS CAREER. THIS ENDING WAS LOU GEHRIG-ESQUE SIMPLY FOR THE RAW EMOTIONS THAT WERE ON DISPLAY. HERE'S A GUY WHO WAS YOUNG AND BRASH AND WASN'T ALL THAT LIKEABLE IN HIS YOUNGER DAYS. HE THEN TRANSFORMED HIMSELF IN FRONT OF OUR EYES INTO ONE OF THE MOST WELL-LIKED ATHLETES OF THIS GENERATION. AGASSI'S CAREER ACTUALLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN OVER 8 YEARS AGO WHEN HE STARTED PLAYING IN SATELLITE TOURNAMENTS. THOSE ARE RESERVED FOR PLAYERS WHO ARE JUST TRYING TO HANG ON. BUT AGASSI REVITALIZED HIS CAREER RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR EYES. INSTEAD OF BEING REMEMBERED AS THE REBEL HE ONCE WAS, HE WILL FOREVER BE REMEMBERED AS ONE OF THE MOST REVERED ATHLETES OF ALL TIME. September 1, 2006Friday's Odds and EndsWhat Western Conference General Manager is in town with his wife ? Not sure what he's doing or why he's here.
