May 2007 ArchivesBy Joe Becker Roger Clemens is scheduled to make his big league comeback Monday when he throws against the Chicago White Sox in Chicago. The Yankees are 13 and a half games behind Boston in the A.L. East Division and are tied with Tamp Bay for last place. Clemens has a one year contract at 28 million dollars. I say good for Roger. Make that great for Roger. If anyone deserves the cash and the perks...it's Clemens... Alright people.....stop with the Greg Odem (or Odom) pronounciations!! This just goes to prove that money can't buy happiness, or wins. The New York Yankees with the highest payroll in baseball at $189 million are now in last place in the AL East. They're tied with Tampa Bay at $24 million. By Joe Becker No hockey this weekend. I missed watching it. The Stanley Cup Finals open tomorrow when Ottawa plays at Anaheim at 5pm on the Versus network. NBC will pick up the series for game three next Saturday in Ottawa. I hope the ratings are better than last weekend. I couldn't believe it. Well, By Joe Becker "It's been a beautiful experience." That's how Greg Oden's mother Zoe Oden described her visit to Portland this week. Oden was here with her son Greg Oden, who had meetings with Nike. The Blazers won the lottery this week...the NBA Draft Lottery...and chances are they will take Oden, the 7-foot Center from Ohio St. Oden is just the kind of player the Blazers are looking for. An extremely talented playe... Blazer tickets are going fast! The Ace, Brian Warner, and I covered the Blazer ticket sales today. We were in the offices and the phone calls kept coming. They had close to two dozen people answering Phones and I didn't see one of them not handling a call while we were there. The Blazers say they did more than one million dollars in new ticket sales the night of By Joe Becker How many times have you heard anyone say the Blazers are number one in the last few years...and mean it? Blazermania is back! The Blazers have the number one pick in the NBA draft. How lucky is that....the Blazers had about a 5 in 100 chance to jump to number one...and they got it. Ace Sports Photographer Brian Warner and I were at the Blazers Draft Party at "The Venue" in North East Portland and what a wil... Let me preface this blog entry with.....I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!! It is welcomed with open arms. The Blazers today announcing their parntership with Comcast SportsNet. The new regional sports network....devoted solely to the Blazers--and sports in Oregon--will launch this October. All but 1 Blazer game will be televised between Comcast...and this very station, KGW. What a score for fans throughout Oregon. By Joe Becker It's Sunday Night and Sports Sunday just ended. A few random thoughts from today. Obviously, here in the Sports office...we talk a lot of sports. By Joe Becker The Rocket is moving closer to liftoff. Roger Clemens pitched for single-A Tampa on Friday and should be back with the Yankees by the end of the Month. Good for Roger...that the Yankees will give him a one year contract for 28 million. What a sweet deal. Big money, he starts two months after everyone else...and he gets time off when he's not pitching. Clemens is a great pitcher, but I don't know if he... BY Joe Becker The Blazers wound up being the butt of jokes over the 1984 NBA Draft. It's well known that the Blazers, who needed a big man, took Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan. Bowie was racked with injuries and Jordan went on to become perhaps the greatest player in history. Hakeem Olajuwon was taken number one that year by the Houston Rockets after the Blazers lost a coin flip. The Blazers took Bowie and Jordan went to the Bul... The baseball world is taking notice of the modern day Crash Davis. By Joe Becker You hear all the athletes talk about it. Winning the ring. It doesn't matter the sport...it's about winning that championship ring. Michael Jordan won six with the Chicago Bulls...as did Scottie Pippen. Robert Horry also has six, but he has won his with three different teams. He won two with the Rockets, three with the Lakers and one more with the Spurs. Bill Russell is the all-time leader as a player w... I'm a little angered tonight after what transpired in Phoenix in Game 5. By Joe Becker It's the Stanley Cup Playoffs...and Adam and I have been watching the Playoff game between Ottawa and Buffalo. We also have the Cavs-Nets game on another TV as well, but the Sabres were facing a must win situation. Big victory for Buffalo 3-2 to stay alive in the series. The Senators are now up 3-1 in the best of seven series.. Beaverton's Paul Gaustad plays for Buffalo. Gaustad missed the last couple of m... What a performance by Sheldon High School's Philip Bagdade at the 6A state golf tournament today. Bagdade is a junior....but seemed to master the OGA course in Woodburn (which, by the way, isn't necessarily easy). Bagdade was unconscience early on too....carding birdies on 7 straight holes (5 thru 12). And that was tough for anyone to catch up to. Bagdade closed with a sensational 6-under-66....to win the individual title. Kudos to y... I can't even fathom why Mariners GM Bill Bavasi continues to "believe" in Jeff Weaver. How tired are you M's fans of these uncanny personel decisions? It's rather mind-boggling....and I'm a fan of a different AL West team. Each time I see Weaver as the "probable" pitcher...I wince! He's just a month into his Mariner tenure....and has lost all 6 games he's started. Plus, he's got a robust 14.32 ERA--highest among every starting pitcher... By Joe Becker What a beautiful day in the Northwest...and I spent most of it about 7 thousand feet up on Mt. Hood! KGW Photographer Jim Culp and I went up the Mountain to do a story with the U.S. Snowboard Team, which is training at Mt. Hood Meadows. More than 40 team members and coaches will be there through Sunday including several Olympians. It wa... By Joe Becker Barry Bonds is now just ten homers away from Hank Aaron's all-time homer record. I was asking people around the Newsroom today to see what they thought...who is the best ever in baseball? A few said Bonds. The guy is an unbelievable player. However, I still think Babe Ruth is the best ever. ... This past weekend had been circled on my calendar for quite some time. One year to be exact! Down at Mt. Bachelor in Bend...they held the 5th Annual Race & Ace--a team event that is considered the best in all of North America. This year there were 20 four-person teams....and 7 two-person teams. It was the second year I competed--and I use that word loosely! I teammed up with KVAL Sports Director, and good friend, Tom Ward. We finish... By Joe Becker What a great day in sports. I started by watching the end of the Cavs-Nets game...yes, I was up before noon. Then at work I was watching the bloody battle between the Suns-Spurs and Tiger Woods winning the Wachovia Championship on the PGA tour. Throw in some Stanley Cup Hockey and Roger Clemens announcement that he is coming back...and its a pretty full and fun day. Sports Sunday just ended and I was thinking ... Kiki Lara is only 1 game into his Timbers tenure.....but don't be shocked if he's jumping for joy for next Wednesday's game vs. Necaxa. Sure, there is a game Saturday vs. rival Seattle.....but that pales in comparison to what's brewing inside Lara. Timbe... By Joe Becker I'm fired up for tonight's battle between Dallas and Golden state. The Warriors with a chance to make history. They can be the first 8 seed to beat a 1 seed in a 7 game NBA playoff series. The Mavericks hoping to avoid being embarrassed. We've been talking about the series in the office and it's been a whole lot of fun. By Joe Becker Just got back from Brandon Roy's Rookie of the Year Ceremony...and It was great to see. I've mentioned this before...but Roy is not only a great player...but a great guy. "This is 10 times better than I thought it would be." Roy said of the honor as the NBA's best rookie. And for the Blazers and their fans...it seems the best is yet to... |
