Whenever an earthquake shakes the Northwest, everyone loves to share their stories about how it felt. I thought that would be a fun reason for an interactive blog.
Here are some examples from kgw.com viewers:
Call me crazy, but I was laying in bed and could have sworn I felt an earthquake. I wasn't dreaming because I was in the midst of tossing and turning. Heard some noise, rattling, and felt definate movement. It's either that or something big crashed into our front yard.
Was there an earthquake about 1:40 AM Thursday, August 3, 2006? My roommate and I both felt our beds move, and my french doors were slamming around for a few good seconds. I did notice online that there was a recorded 3.3 in WA around 1:39 AM, so was it just the ripple effect or possibly an aftershock?

I'm up in the town of Woodland, WA. I was wondering if you have had any reports of an earthquake in SW WA this morning? I was laying in bed, nearly asleep when I was awakened by the bed shaking and things rattling in the bedroom. I jumped out of bed, and looked online.... Yes, I did feel an earthquake:
Just before 2 this morning a earthquake rolled through my quite Vancouver Neighborhood. I live off of 17th and Minniehaha and couldn't sleep so I was sitting online when i hear a LOUD rumble out side. It sounded like a semi truck was pulling up in my drive way ( I live on dead end road where there is no room for a semi) so just as I was walking to look out the front windows my house started shaking. It felt pretty strong but only lasted a second...
Just wanted to share my earthquake story:
I live in a West Linn basement apartment and I felt my bed bounce up off the floor a couple times like someone was underneath it trying to lift up. Then there was a brief moment or two more of simple shaking. It was brief, but scary! I immediately went upstairs to see if anyone else around had felt it, but all was quiet so I assume they did not feel it. I'm glad to hear there actually was a quake and that I was not somehow imagining it!
Michelle Martinez
From reports emailed to USGS
Quake was felt as far east as Hood River and Sandy, OR.
As far west as Forest Grove and Vernonia, OR.
As far south as Dundee, Estacad, and Canby, OR
As far north as Castle Rock and Randle, WA
I live in the Salmon Creek area and just felt a second earthquake or aftershock at approximately 3:22 am. It was strong but only lasted about 3 seconds. First one at 1:39 am lasted about 5 seconds. Boy are they scary!

Hi.
Just thought I'd let you know that the quake tonight was actually the kind that makes noise. I thought something was crashing into the house, like a semi or a train. I live in an old house in Hazel Dell. I don't feel like sleeping now! It hit so fast that I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I mean it. It only seemed to last for about 10 seconds. It actually felt like the house was being shaken in an up & down motion. The sound & motion seemed to hit simultaneously.

WE live in yacolt washington I felt it at 1:38 . It was so short and sudden I thought maybe the mountain had really blown.
I woke up to the house shaking and thought it was my son and his buddy down stairs messing around. I went down stairs and my son comes out of the bath room and says "Did you fell that. What was that?" "an earth quake?" I cant be sure on the time but i think it was close to 3:00am
I live in the Orchards area and it felt like something hit our house hard. I made my husband go outside and see what it was. He said he didn't know. Funny, when we went on vacation a couple of years ago we went to Sacramento and they had a 4.0 earthquake and it didn't feel anything like this one last night. This one felt like it was right under my bed.
Yes i felt it! I live in St.helens oregon..felt the quake at about 1:40 in the morning...was kinda of scary but at the same time kinda cool!
We woke up to the dogs barking (actually freaking out quite nicely) and a very big rumbling. Our house shook a LOT and the noise was unmistakable! Well actually, we weren't sure if it was an Earthquake or if Mount St. Helens had blown a good one! The coincidence of this is that my sister (in Sonoma, CA) experienced an earthquake just yesterday afternoon!
In Tualatin... I thought my spouse had rolled over... but how did the closet doors bang together??? must have been the quake! I did make note of the clock, too.. 1:40am. Case closed!
In Lake Oswego we woke to our bed rocking and rolling and pictures rattling the walls at 1:40am
My husband and I woke up to it. We too had a bunch of kids staying the night in the basement and thought that it had to be them. It just felt like a sudden thud. Shortly after 1 a.m. for us, and we are in the downtown area of Vancouver. Boys left us a note that there had been an earthquake which apparently they read about on My Space.
We live in Fishers Landing area. Both me and my husband woke up at the same time 1:40 AM because our bed was shaking. I looked at him and looked at me and we both went back to sleep. I couldn't sleep anaymore and was wondering if it was an quake.
I was awakened in the middle of the night by the house shaking. I immediately looked at the clock and it said 1:39. My husband slept through it but woke when I said something. Just then, my teenage kids came out of their rooms and asked what was going on. Neither of them had gone to bed yet, and they both felt it strongly. I live in NW Portland near St. Vincent's hospital.
I was awakened this morning at 1:39 am by a shaking of my bed, and my mini blinds in my master bedroom windows rattling against the workwork. I thought I had dreamed it, but it also woke up my son. This morning, I checked on the interet, and there it was posted- the epicenter near Cherry Grove, which is about 2 miles from my house. WOW! I live in BattleGround.
A few minutes before the earthquake shook the cats and the raccoons were really making a vocal fuss outside, didn't think much of it at the time. Then as the earthquake hit, it sounded like a large gust of wind hitting the side of our house and my bamboo plant moved from east to west (give or take a few degrees). I shrugged it off because it didn't feel like any of the other earthqaukes I've been around for (1993 & 2001), didn't have the same intensity as the other two. We live in St Johns about a mile from the St Johns Bridge.
I live in Scappoose and felt the quake, it felt like a wave, my dog just happened to be awake and laid flat on the kitchen floor
At 1:40 I felt a jolt and a noise that sounded like someone slammed my front door. I was not sure what had happened so I went outside and all was quiet. Being that I was still in a fog, I assumed that I had a dream so I went back to bed. A little while later, I felt the aftershock and sure enough, it was real and not a dream.
In Vancouver, I was sound asleep in my bed when I was awaken by the shaking of the bed and the house rattling. The quake seemed to last at least 5 seconds maybe a couple longer. It felt like it was intense and then let up a little then started to get a little stronger before it calmed down. I was afraid it would get worse than it was. My heart racing I could not sleep, I heard the house shake at the first aftershock I was half asleep when the second aftershock hit and it startled me awake while my bed was shaking and the house creeking once again. My heart racing once again I heard the house creeking at the third aftershock. I was finally asleep and didn't hear the house at the fourth aftershock.
I thought someone had ran their car into the side of my house, it shook that hard. Like four really hard, sharp jerking motions. I've lived here all my life, and this was definitely something different! I don't want to do this again! No wonder people leave California...
Live here in West Linn and definitely was awoken at 1:40...
Is that possible? Lived in CA so I know an earthquake when I feel it...
Both my husband and I awoke to the shaking. He had thought that it was just me moving around. I could hear our window panes rattling and told him that there is an earthquake. I laughed afterwards and told him, had we new windows we wouldn't have heard it and had we brought in our new Temper Pedic mattress, wouldn't have felt it. :-)
It woke me out of a sound sleep around 1:30 here in south Beaverton, on the edge of town. I could mostly hear it rattle my window and blinds.
I live on 109th in NE Vancouver.I was up watching TV when suddenly somewhere around 2:30 - 2:40 I felt the walls and the ceiling shaking. It felt like a massive wave. It lasted for 2-3 secs. Then the phone rang and my scared sister asked me: Did you feel that? She was in the middle of a deep sleep when felt the quake. We spent guite a few time on the phone 'cause we were afraid to sleep. Are we ready for a real earthqake?
I live in Beaverton and felt it. It fist sounded lika a loud thud and then a couple of short tremors. Dogs were barking. Woke me up!
i live in st johns a few blocks from Safeway and woke up at 1:45a to my bed vibrating and the windows above it vibrating slightly enough to make noise- I thought my husband was tossing/turning but I realized he was silently snoozing... kinda freaked me out, because i knew this time i wasn't dreaming, i wanted to check the internet, but tried to get back to sleep, took awhile... was waiting for another tremor...
I was awake when the quake hit. I used to live in California and knew what it was. I always lie there trying to figure out whether to go stand under the doorway or not and usually by the time I decide to do something, it's over. It was a shaker, the house definitely shook back and forth for about 5 seconds or so. I had guessed it was about 3+ on the Richter scale. Always exciting and scary.
It woke me out of my sleep and scared me pretty good with the shake then I heard a big bang. At first, I thought the kids were up (summer break and all) running through the house. But when I got up to check on them, I realized they were all asleep. Of course, I was the only one in the house that felt it and no one beleived me this morning until we saw it on the news.
I live on Mt. Norway in Washougal. I woke about 4 am and all of a sudden the house felt as if someone gave it a big push it shuck and then nothing, there was no sound or anything. This is the first quake I have felt in the 5 years we have lived here, I went through the 1989 Quake in California so I knew immediately what was happening.
I live in the Salmon Creek area.. I had just fallen asleep, and felt my bed shake, looked at my clock, it was 1:41 am.. and my dog was sleeping with me.. she was barking and she was scared, I thought are we having an earthquake? I thought oh well, hope this is it, and went back to sleep!
My 14 yr old son, Alex, woke up at 1205 am an called out his bed was shaking. I felt nothing and laughed, saying maybe his bed had magically turned into a massaging bed. Then when I felt the earthquake at 1:40 I almost couldn't believe it! Of course Alex slept through that! Guess I'll call him my early warning system. - Salmon Creek
Woke up last night to my bed shaking. It lasted about 4 seconds. My partner slept through it. I live in SW Portland in the Council Crest neighborhood.
I live in Beaverton and I woke up from my bed few seconds before quake to go to restroom and I felt entire my home shaking for about a second and I knew very well that it was earthquake. I ran down the stairs and waited near my doorstep to get out of home in case if it gets intensified.
We live in the Felida area of Vancouver, and both my husband and I woke last night to a very strong shaking. I used to live in So. Cal so I knew it was a quake. I though it might be St. Helens...
I live about 3 miles from where they are saying the epicenter was for this quake. It woke me up at 1:30. It felt like a boom and the windows were rattling hard.My dog started barking. Then the aftershock at 3:30ish woke me up again. It didn't shake, just felt like something hit the house and made a booming noise and was done.
I was woke out of a sound sleep feeling like a truck had crashed into our apartment....I knew it was an earthquake
I live in Vancouver, just North of PDX. I did not feel it, but it woke my husband up from a deep sleep. We have a brick house and he said that it shook and it was loud by his account. I got on the usgs website immediately because I didnt believe him, and sure enough - an earthquake! Makes me want to get insurance and reminds us all that we need to have emergency preparedness kits in case the next one is the BIG one!
I live in a Cascade Park appartment. The teens below woke me up and just as I had fallen back asleep I felt a jolt. I really thought one of the kids had slammed a door very hard. But then it happended again later. I found out about the quake at 6:30 am. Now I can't blame those kids, just Mother Nature herself.
I live in LaCenter and woke up to my house shaking at 1:40am. It lasted about 8 seconds from the time it awoke me. I woke up again at 3:42 to what felt like a smaller earthquake. I could hear the earthquake about 15 seconds after the shaking stopped. I actually pictured Mt St Helens had blown again as it was a short violent shaking. There was no damage that I could see but I did hear dishes and doors rattling. I was just thankful it stopped after 8 seconds and didn't continue or intensify.
i was slepping and all of a suden my bed streded to shake. i woke up and i was like what was that
my mom told me this moring it was an earthquake.
thats how i found out

I was lightly asleep and then I heard the noise and felt it. It woke both my husband and daughter that nothing wakes them up!!! My husband thought it was a plane crash I thought something blew up. Figured out it was an earthquake but was so surprised on how long it seemed to last and how loud it was. My heart was racing so fast I couldn't go back to sleep.
La Center Washington
i was slepping and all of a suden my bed stared to shake. i woke up and i was like what was that my mom told me this moring it was an earthquake. thats how i found out

My four month old son woke up seconds before the quake. As soon as i woke up to attend to him, the house started to shake, i could actually hear the glass in my tv screen shaking. I thought hmm we are having a earthquake, well no damage and it was over pretty quickly. My second thought was well i am glad we are all home and together.
I live in Oregon City,it woke me up because the bed was moving and I heard the house which had some issues from the 1995 quake rumble. I am glad nothing was damaged except some nerves.
My family lives in La Center. My husband and I woke up to our bed shaking and the blinds rattling very loud. We looked at each other and I said, "that had to have been an earth quake". We went downstairs to ensure that the house was fine and checked on the kids. Altogether a 20 minute incident, but it's always exciting when mother nature provided a little hint of what she's cabable of.
My husband, and I were laying in bed (I was sleeping, and did not feel it) and all of a sudden he woke me up and was somewhat shook up saying, "Oh, my gosh the house just moved!". Half asleep I was like, "What the house can't move", lol. But, then he realized right away what had just happened and he was like "We just had an Earthquake!"

My husband and I were awakended from sleep by the quake. When checking on our 3 girls, who were also awake, we asked our middle one if she felt it, she replied, "Oh, is that what it was, I thought it was just sissy's hampster hitting the wall again"!
We live north of Battle Ground. Just before 1:40 my husband got up. I woke up also. When he came back to bed the earthquake hit. It was LOUD and shook the house hard for about 5 seconds. My 13 year old son woke up and said he had been thrown off his bed! I was sure the morning news would report Mt St Helens blew.
I am in Kalama, WA and I'd just let my cats in for the night and we were laying on the bed about to go to sleep when suddenly everything started shaking. I thought one of them had jumped on my dresser as a perfume bottle fell over. Sitting up, both cats were still on the bed with me and looking very alert trying to figure out what had happened.
I was working the overnight shift in the 224 Corporate Center in Milwaukie. It sounded like a freight train was rolling through the parking lot. The windows on the 3rd floor were shaking as if a big gust of wind was pounding the building. I would say it lasted about 8 seconds.
I live in SE Portland near Mt. Tabor. I was sleeping and woke to my bed shaking. I was sure at that time there was a quake but I figured it was stronger than it was.
I was amazed that it was only 3.8 as it awakened us shaking the house here at the mouth of the Willamette on Sauvies Island. I felt two after shocks.
I live near VanMall and I woke up really mad. I felt someone was shaking me and I was mad! I heard the closet doors rattling and initially thought it might be a loud freight train coming thru. But then I knew it was an earthquake. My dogs sniffed a bit in their crate, so i knew something was up, as they are sound sleepers.
We're in Yacolt, WA, too! It's was 1:40am, and my husband and I were in bed, chatting. Just as we stopped chatting, the earthquake hit. It didn't feel like a typical, Pacific NW earthquake. It wasn't that silent, slipping/sliding feeling kind that lasts a few seconds and fades in a fades out. It was a sudden snap bang. We would have thought someone crashed their car into our house, or some dynamite went off nearby, except it was silent. Well, except for the extreme creaking of the house. We even thought maybe a meteorite hit, due to the 'impact' feel of it. Very unlike any other PNW earthquake I've felt. We, too, thought it would involve Mt. St. Helen's erupting due to to our location. Interesting!
I was in the middle of a dream when I was jolted awake by my bed shaking. It lasted for a few seconds. I looked at the clock and it was 1:40. I thought it must be an earthquake, since the townhouses on either side of mine are vacant. I didn't get much sleep for the rest of the night. It was kind of exciting.
I live in Hazel Dell and the thing scared the crud out of me. I wasn?t sure what it was at first but my heart was pounding. I looked out the window to see if it was strong wind but there was none. I then walked around my house to make sure it wasn?t someone breaking in. The 2nd one woke me up and I was more suspicious this time, confirmed it wasn?t wind so I turned on KGW. Nothing came on except Conan O'Brian so I went back to sleep.
The last quake I remember was in 93 that his the Portland area and that was a 5. something. I went on vacation down to L.A in 1994 over the Martin Luther King Holiday weekend and the NorthRidge quake went when I was down there and that was very scarry a 6.8. This little quake was fun and I wish that people had a little more brains and not pick up the phone and call the police or 911 unless its an emergency. IT'S AN EARTH QUAKE DON'T PANIC.
I live in SE Portland, and at about 1:38 I started dreaming about an earthquake. In my dream I was thinking "All right! Rock On!" I woke up and my house was shaking. It felt like I was still dreaming when my sister, who is visiting, came into my room to make sure she wasn't crazy... "That's nothing, I said. In Japan this is normal" (???) I must have still been out of it. The dream made it feel like it went on for a long time but maybe it was only a few seconds...Do you suppose the "big one" is going to hit soon? Shake-a shake shake...
I felt it in Lake Oswego. I was sound asleep and woke up because the bed was shaking. Dreamed about it for the rest of the night and woke up to find out that there indeed as an earthquake.
I was awakened by the sound of something "pinging" or "rattling" against something metallic. Was it our furnace ductwork? Did a bird or rodent fall off our house and hit our air conditioner? I must have just awoken right as the earthquake was ending because I thought it might have been a dream. Once I finally was awake I didn't hear anything more. I dismissed it as a very realistic dream.
Funny thing is that I went outside this morning just to peak at our air conditioner to see if it was OK...or if one of our patio chairs fell over. Now that I'm on KGW.com and saw it was an earthquake, it all makes sense!
It woke mw up and my first thought was "will it get stronger?" I grew up in So. Cal and was at the Northridge Hosp. duing the 1994 Earthquake having just giving birth to my 4 child. I know right away it was an earthquake. The adrenaline rush kept me awake for about an hour and I kept wondering if there would be a larger one.
I live in Hazel Dell. I was up playing video games online and about 1:40 am my house shock very hard. It lasted about 3-5 seconds, but if it would of lasted any longer things would of been falling off of the shelves. I also felt one of the aftershocks around 3:20am.
We live in the Irvington area in NE Portland. I woke up to a loud rumble, and when I looked at the wall across the room, the whole apartment was shaking visibly. It only lasted about 2-5 seconds, but it was enough to wake me up from a deep slumber. My wife felt nothing.
I live in downtown Portland, on the top floor of a 100 year old building. I was going to bed and felt the gentle swaying so I went to lay next to my fiance in case it was the big one. Glad it wasn't.
wow! we're from CA so I've felt quakes B4...but I thot this was more than a 3 pointer! We live in Camas, Prune Hill area....I was sitting on the 'john' when she hit...it felt STRONG, doors rattling, floor shaking under my feet, we did a little "rock-n-rolling"! Seemed like it lasted for half a minute?? REAL strong at first, then a steady aftershock...I woke the hubby, we thot maybe St. Helens was "acting up"!!
Was woken up at 1:40 to my house shaking. Lamps and cupboards creaked and the blinds knocked a bit. Lasted about 5 seconds. I thought I was dreaming as my partner did not feel it. Our dog was woken up and was acting weird for about 3 hours after.Felt a bit like a large truck had been driving by too close to the house. This is in Beaverton.
I was still up on the computer doing some work, when all of a sudden a heard something like a loud wind gust and my house started rattling for a few seconds. My cats even felt it. They got up and took off for cover. Just as I was starting to get up.. it stopped and I sat there frozen for a few minutes because I was scared. I Went to bed around 3:00.. couldn't sleep after that. I didn't feel the aftershock at 3:30 though.
I live in Yacolt, WA and last night around 1:35 I felt and heard the earthquake. My house shook very violently and I was terified. After that I laid awake in bed incase there was an after shock. Thankfully I didn't feel one.
I live north of the Orchards (Vancouver) area - NE 94th Ave and 105 St). The initial quake woke me up - rolling/shaking as well as the noise (groan/moan); knew immediately what it was. Interesting that my indoor cat was very restless and watchful earlier that evening. I also felt one of the aftershocks as well. The barn cats and horses were VERY alert this morning too!
I live in Oregon City, OR just off of Southend Rd. and the quake woke me up this morning. I awoke to the feeling of the bed shaking and said to my husband, "Wow, this must be an earthquake." I laid there for a minute wondering if there was going to be another, bigger one and if I should go get the kids. Shortly thre after, I fell asleep and forgot all about it until I heard about it on the news this morning.
We live in the Laurelhurst Area, I was awaken from my sleep, checked on the family they were knocked out...and had to go online to prove to them there was acutally an earthquake early this morn they thought mom went nuts..ha!
My friend and I were sitting on the couch playing some Tiger Woods 06, when out of the blue the couch shook and our faces turned to fear when thought of Jurasic Park coming to life right here in the northwest. The ground shooked and we were here to witness it.
My husband and I just finished a movie and turned off the lights and T.V. Two of our cats jumped off the bed and ran downstairs, then we heard the T.V. make a weird sound as if it were being moved, but then the bed just started to move up and down. I immediately said "oh my gosh we're having an earthquake" I turned on NWCN to see if they had any breaking news but never saw anything and I finally got to sleep around 2:15 a.m. after wondering if it was just us experiencing something really weird, but at 7:30 this morning first thing I did was turn on the news and happily confirmed that I wasn't loosing my mind.
Yes, I definitely felt it at 1:39 am. Turned on the TV and there was nothing on. Then went on craigslist and found out that I wasn't crazy that there had really been an earthquake. You could really feel my apartment shake and windows rattle. Kinda scary1
I live in Beaverton in a third story apartment. I felt it. I felt pretty strong to me so when I heard it was centered near Vancouver and less then 4.0 I was suprised. Nothing in my place fell but things swayed for a few seconds. I thought someone next door dropped something or slammed their door extremely hard or something like that.
Hey - no biggy really, just a reminder where we live...I grew up in the Bay Area (relatives survived 1906 and 1989) and this truly is nothing! All the same, be prepared...We were more unnerved by the loud screech, crash and subsequent sirens of the car accident about 30 minutes later near our home.
Salmon Creek: My husband and I were sleeping when a loud cracking noise woke us up. My husband jumped out of bed trying to find out what the noise was. As I sat up in bed to talk to him our bed moved, it felt like I was on a waterbed. Since we couldn't find any reason for the noise, and the bed had moved, we assumed it must have been an earth quake. It was an unsettling experience to have in the middle of the night.
I'm not sure whether it was the noise or the shaking, but I sat up in bed, looked at the clock and it was 1:40 a.m. The house was making lots of creeking sounds and I was fairly sure it was an earthquake. My husband never woke up or heard a thing. We moved to Oregon about 7 years ago. This was the second quake that got my attention. They're exciting to experience as long as they don't measure anything over a 3.8.
I was awake and reading in bed. I felt the bed slightly shake, thinking a large truck might have driven by. But then the whole house jolted suddenly, and I knew that it was an earthquake. I got on USGS.gov right away but it hadn't been posted yet. I didn't feel any of the aftershocks, but at least I was able to finish off my book!
We live in Ariel, Washington which is 15 miles NE of Woodland. I awoke about 1:30 a.m. to a loud disturbing noise which sounded like something huge was about to land on our roof! very disturbing!.It seemed to last 30 seconds or more. My husband said he felt the quake. It wasn't a rolling but a hard jolt. About 3:30 a.m. I was awakened again for two aftershocks (one right after another) that sounded like heavy animals walking across our outside porch making heavy creaking sounds. They each lasted a few seconds.
I was reading my book in bed when I felt the quake. It felt as if someone was shaking the bed. It lasted only a few seconds. I stayed up reading for two more hours to see if there would be an aftershock. I felt the 3.6 quake in Hood River.
I live in Kelso and felt it. I thought someone ran their car into the house, or was trying to kick the front door in.
I live in Tualatin and was up watching TV when I felt my couch start to shake. It wasn't too violent but it was very noticable. It felt like i was shaking side to side but also almost bouncing up and down at the same time. Weird and hard to explain, but it was a cool experience.
I live in Vernonia,OR and my bed was shaking like someone was under there,so I slept with the light on the rest of the night.
I was reading and at 1:39 a.m. it felt like the house convulsed, the walls creaked and my bed shook like crazy. It lasted about 5 seconds. We live in N.E. Gresham. I didn't feel any aftershocks.
I live on the west side of Beaverton, OR and I woke up around the time of the earthquake wondering why my bed was shaking. It was so dark in my room and I remember trying to focus my eyes on anything that might have moved the bed. I thought my 4 year old had sneaked into my room and was tossing in bed next to me. I'm relieved that I wasn't dreaming but now I know that there really was an earthquake that rattled my bed!!!
I was sitting at the computer in my wheelchair, when the ground started to shake. I nearly fell out of my chair, and had to hold on to the hardwood desk just to stay upright.
I live in Battle Ground and I awoke at 1:40 a.m. due to the quake but didn't realize that was what woke me up. My dog started barking so I went down stairs to see what was going on. I didn't notice any movement in the house or hear door banging like others mentioned. I woke up sometime around 3:30ish when others claim there was an aftershock.
I live in east Oregon City, about 15 minutes from Portland and felt the quake at about 1:40 a.m. while I was laying in bed watching Blind Date, haha. As soon as I felt it, I muted the T.V. and I couldn't feel it anymore. I thought to myself that it must have been an earthquake. This is the first one I have ever felt! I was kind of hoping to feel another one (just a little one) but I didn't.
In Tualatin, Oregon... sitting at the computer around 1:39 a.m....a quick jolt along with the entertainment center glass door starting to rattle...I quickly realized I live on the top floor of a 3-story apartment with only a glass dining room table to crawl under. I am rethinking my earthquake preparedness.
I live just outside Battle Ground, and I definitely felt the quake. I woke up around 130ish to my bed shaking and the handles on my dresser rattling. Of course being woken so suddenly, I was a little dazed and confused. So I went into my parents room and brothers room to see if they had to felt the shaking as well. Sure enough, it woke us all up.
i was like asl33p and dreeming of a hottie in my 8th grade class and like suddenly omg!!2 what! lol i thought my s1s was sn33king in2 my room lol. omg later my dad was screaming wtf and checking on me and my brothR i was like lol dad it's not an eRthqk. it was k00l.
I live in Walla Walla, WA and I actually felt the earthquake or an aftershock around 3:30. It was small but it shook my bed and the floor. I'm just surprised I felt it all the way here from the Portland area.
Too Funny: I had been online, helping to "fix up" one of my Girlfriends with a guy I knew. I had been telling them both how perfect I thought they would be for one another. They had just decided to meet for the first time. Feeling quite pleased with myself, I went out onto my Deck: Upon stepping out I heard a giant roar. The time was 1:44 a.m. All of a sudden the roar grew increasingly louder,(it sounded like a freight train) and then the entire deck started shaking wildly and my dog started barking his head off!I knew immediately we were experiencing an Earthquake. The second quake occured at appx. 4:00m a.m. Later in the morning I logged back on to my Computer, and the guy I had just set up with my Girlfriend was online, We both had a good laugh that at the very moment he and my Friend decided to meet and plan for thier very first date, they caused the "Earth To Move"!(I predict BIG things ahead for these two!) :)
Yeah so i went to bed at 1:30 and by 1:40 I was half asleep. I thought I was dreaming when the room started shaking, and then I thought that it was my boyfriend shaking next to me, and I sat up and then it stopped. I fell asleep soon after and I woke up to a friend asking me if I felt the earthquake last night. I was amazed, because I have never been awake for one, I thought that I was dreaming. I live on Baseline, 185th area in Beaverton.
So I'm not nuts!! I knew I felt an earthquake and I woke up my husband who said "Your Nuts". I told him if that wasn't an earthquake then there is something seriously wrong with our house. All day he's been saying to me "Did you feel that honey?". So Ha Ha Ha I'm not crazy.

This was posted under the wrong name...let's all try this again...Hey - no biggy really, just a reminder where we live...I grew up in the Bay Area (relatives survived 1906 and 1989) and this truly is nothing! All the same, be prepared...We were more unnerved by the loud screech, crash and subsequent sirens of the car accident about 30 minutes later near our home.
i was awaken at about 1:42am when my headboard was shaking and i felt my bed roll. we live in St. John. This is the 4th one we have felt in this house in the last 4 years. we are not far from Kelly Point. we have cracks in our foundation and the one before this one we discovered our ground in front of the house had collasped.
I live in Lake Oswego and was awaken with a loud noise, my upstairs bedroom creeking and my waterbed sloshing really, really hard. Took me a few seconds to realize what was going on and that the house was shaking but my waterbed was rolling . . at that time I looked at the clock and it was 1:40 am.
I live in Forest Grove and I just got to bed and I felt a jolt. I layed there listening and waiting for something else. Nothing else happened, so I fell asleep.
I was on my computer this morning when suddenly I felt a big rummble of my surroundings. I immediately said it was an earthquake. But this is not the first time I've felt an earth quake in our area (181st & Halsey). There has been several very small quakes in the past year.
At first I thought it was a quake associated with Mt. St. Helens. I was planning to hike to the rim on August 17th and wasn't happy because I thought they might prevent hikers access. Then I thought to check th USGS site and discovered my hike was still on. My friend who lives in Salmon Creek kept texting me messages of the tremors that followed and couldn't go back to sleep. I know exactly where the quake originated because I have friends who grew up there and used to hang out there.
Had the worst migraine last night, was lying in bed watching TV when I heard and felt the quake; I want to say it lasted about 5 seconds and yes, I heard it, too........a jolt and shaking. I live on SE 45th & Salmon in Portland on the bike route and I heard creaking noises passing by as well. I sat up and figured, "Yup, that's an earthquake!". I went on-line at USGS and waited for the quake to show up on the map. I was surprised it was up in Washington, felt like it'd come from the east to west to me. At first they gave it a 3.3 and then upgraded it to 3.8 which sounds alot more like it. Maybe it's a wake up call, so to speak...
Haven't felt any of the aftershocks, but there've been quite a few, don't you think? That's one of the things I love about the Northwest--you never know what to expect next---so I'll go around and straighten out my pictures and be glad it was all that it was, nothing more.
My boyfriend and I woke this morning to the windows rattling and the bed shaking. I didn't know what it was and then my boyfriend said, "Earthquake"; we were in Battle Ground when it happened. I was surprised that I didn't figure out that it was an earthquake considering that I had lived in Southern California for a number of years. Must have forgotten what the experience was like. Still unnerving to say the least.
After reading a book for school this comming fall I put my head down at around 1am (being the teenager that I am.) Around 1:30ish or so I was in a light sleep and awoke to my Galilean Thermometer (Which contains 5 glass balls in water that rise and fall according to temperature) rattling against the glass. As well, the bookshelf the thermometer was on began to sway back and forth quite steadily. I knew exactly what it was and waited a bit to see if it would intensify and weather or not I needed to do anything to protect myself. It stopped just as fast as it started. I then took a moment to thank God for making it a small one. Quite the excitement really...
I live in Oregon City on Beutel Rd just off of Southend Rd, I was awake at 1:39am due to back pain and It felt like something hitting the side of house on the wall my bed sits against. The mirrored framed painting above my bed shook and tilted, also the night stand and all of it's contents shook and rattled. I decided to give it an hour and check the earth quake website to see how big it was and where it was.
I was spending another late night unable to sleep when I noticed my entire desk shift. Then heard the bookcase on the otherside of the room shift as well. I knew what it was but gave up seeing if you're site would report it at around 2:15AM.
BTW I'm in Oak Grove.
With Portland being my hometown, and moving to the Los Angeles area a while back... Living down here you learn to accept minor earth movements. Don't freak out over every little thing you guys!!! It's just like the little 1" snow scare you face each winter... Just take a deep breath and accept it.
I live in the NE part of Canby, and felt the quake as well. I was laying in bed watching t.v. when all of a sudden it sounded like somebody jumped and walked across my roof. I cautiously went outside with my flashlight to see if I was being robbed, or attacked. I acutally considered calling the police in case of prowlers or pranksters. So..way down here in Canby...we felt it too.
