Update--June 15, 2009

I stopped by the nest site late this afternoon and watched the two juveniles flying around and soaring in the sunshine. They are now very strong fliers and are able to land well. One of the juveniles was having a great time chasing pigeons. Pigeons are actually pretty difficult prey when they are airborne---they a fairly fast fliers and very maneuverable. The red-tail did not stand a chance but he seemed to be having a good time practicing his skills. Particularly cool is watching them fly around "Big Pink" (US Bancorp Tower). The air currents around the skyscraper allow them to pick-up a great deal of speed as they ascend and makes for some really spectacular aerial acrobatics. If you find yourself in the vicinity of the US Bancorp Tower, be sure to look up---the hawks are very easy to spot.

Thanks, Bob, for your continuing updates! I am so happy the hawks are doing well and having fun, and will be sure to look for them when downtown. Do you have any idea where they sleep now, and are they basically alone or still stay together when resting?

Hi Bob,
I checked in on the raptor cam last night somewhere around 7:30-7:45 p.m. and one of the hawks was sitting on the railings preening itself. I was surprised to find it there. I left the cam and went back later on and it was gone. It was nice to see it still surviving. Sounds like from your update, they are doing just fine. Thanks again for your updates as I read all of them. I know that it takes up some of your time to do them.

One of the babies was perched at the nest this morning at 6:40. lol. Cool. I haven't seen one since I was downtown a week or two ago.

If anyone's tuning in, I'm curious if anyone can help me identify a couple sightings.

Along I-205 at (I believe) exit 6 (the only exit going North after Stafford and before West Linn exit), there is a tall, metal telephone pole looking structure with a nest in the top tier. I saw a rather large bird perched atop this morning. I could not tell what it is, but it didn't look to be a crow. I also do not think it's a red-tail.

Then if you drive north-bound a bit further, around the viewpoint (before the West Linn exit) there are a number of light poles in the middle of the highway. There is almost always a bird perched on one that does look like a red tail.

Maybe there's a red tail nest close by that might be worth another cam for next year?

6:50. Baby's still perched; maybe waiting for Mom to bring some food, I don't know. :) I'll have to head downtown this weekend and see if I can get some pictures of them soaring around.

Is there a parking structure or some building I can get rooftop access to in hopes of getting a better birds-eye view? ;)

Hi Bob,
Checked in at 8:30am eastern time and saw someone perched on the rail. So good to see someone at the nest! It was too dark though to get a good look. Thanks for all the updates, and THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!

Both babies were at the nest last night and one stayed perched until dark.

Haven't seen either yet this morning.
