Recently in PDX Scene CategoryIt's been a surprisingly busy news week here, considering the holiday that usually everybody takes off early for to go relax - but what a TON of great happenings this Fourth! One of the coolest things I've ever done was cover the Olympic Trials under way in Eugene this week. It's raining and there's no more college football for you. NO MORE. I've revamped the Harmon Kardon turntable and have been seeking out new copies of my favorite all time records. These ain't MP3 kids, this is the real deal and it's HEAVY as a motherlode. So heavy you can't lift the needle cause it's sucked onto the black wax vortex vacuum... It's never too early in the week for a concert, though sometimes Monday feels that way. Minneapolis faves (now based in NYC) The Hold Steady hit the stage at the Crystal Ballroom last night, not letting a small crowd keep them down. Maybe it was just the fact that the previous night they played a "dry" college campus, but the band brought its legendary energy all night. Plenty of other good shows coming up this week.... like Feis... The film is based on the true story of a 1970's Harlem crime lord whose exploits made him something of a cult figure. "American Gangster" may not be for everyone, but fans of past gangster classics - as well as those who liked H... Ever seem like concerts come in waves to P-town? If so, then get ready to get drenched this weekend. Friday night kicks off not one, not two, but three shows fighting for your buck - and your groove-time. Gourmet Magazine is out with its latest "Restaurant Issue" featuring what it calls the 100 best farm-to-table restaurants in America. No surprise that Portland gets a healthy representation. No surprise either that Higgins Restaurant gets the largest nod, with a short write-up as a local pioneer in the "Urban" category. Gourmet acknowledges ... |
