People looking for something to do this weekend can take time out to meet a Trail Blazers star, watch a Veteran's Parade or puppet show, or enjoy some local entertainment at area clubs.

On Saturday, Trail Blazers guard Andre Miller will be signing autographs at the grand opening celebration of the new DICK's Sporting Goods at Lake Oswego's Meridian Square.

Also Saturday, folks can head to Vancouver for the 23rd annual Veteran's Parade which will include organizations representing all branches of the service, high school marching bands, college and high school ROTC groups and Boy Scout troops, to name just a few of the participants.

Or you could take the kids to a musical puppet show called Penny's Puppet Productions at the Northwest Library, located at 2300 N.W. Thurman Street.

Want to just hang out and listen to some music? See Muddy Rudder at the Public House, if you're in the mood for some Irish music, or take in some blues at Andina Restaurant with Toshi Oniquka on Saturday and Scott Head on Sunday.

On Sunday, The Portland Art Museum is having a free family day or you could head to the Children's Book Bank at 1728 NE Glisan for an open house. Attendees will have the chance to enter a raffle.

Also, the Kennedy School is hosting a day of free workshops on womens' issues.

This blog is haunted - and ghastly portions will be appearing and disappearing over the next few nights to keep you in touch with the forces at work surrounding All Hollow's Eve and the Day of the Dead celebrations.

The Dia de los Muertos procession is THURSDAY night on Alberta Street.

Traditionally, All Saint's Day is November 1, followed by All Soul's Day (Day of the Dead.)
Traditionally, departed relatives are represented in elaborate altars, honored with food, drink and their favorite indulgences from the Earthly life.

From PDXDayoftheDead: "The Mexican flatters and woos death, he sings to her, dances with her, lifts his glass to her, he laughs at her. Finally, he challenges her, and in the challenging, death loses her power to intimidate him. Once he knows death intimately, death is no longer wrapped in a cloak of mystery or a reason to fear the darkness."

The Alberta procession starts at 7 p.m. at the lot behind the co-op on NE 15th. Community altars can be seen from 3 PM until 11 behind the Guardino Gallery on 2939 NE Alberta.

Let's not forget the animals - we know they love dress-up as much as we do!
Coastal Farm and Ranch is hosting poet costume contests at all area stores.
Nutro and Greenies donated more than $2,000 in pet food prizes AND pets will get free treats for entering. Coastal is also donating $1 for each entry to the local humane society.

Pets will be judged in four weight classes and there will be a most unusual costume winner.
Thursday, October 29 at 5 p.m. at all four of Coastal Farm & Ranch's stores in Gresham, Oregon City, Cornelius and Woodburn.

Halloween

The kids from the Mercury are helping throw the "Best little horror house" at the Doug Fir. There'll be pumpkin smashing (hosted by (Fake) Billy Corgan and Gallagher) skits from local comedy/horror troups, and music from The Bugs and Red fang. It's also a haunted house setting down in the stage lounge.
They said they're gonna sacrifice a goat at midnight too.

In the Kenton neighborhood, the Old Fashioned Halloween Ho-down will have fun for the kids - and the big kids starting at noon at the Disjecta art space.

The former-converted bowling alley is being turned into a cavern of creepiness with vintage games, cake walks, live music, a raffle, Halloween crafts, scary movies and more. A nightside 21+ party starts at nine. This place is HUGE and awesome. I can't wait to see it all come together.

Slabtown is hosting the Cheap tattoos costumes and bands

"Costume Contest. Door prizes. Pumpkin Pie Eating Contest. Fog. Bands - Chemicals - Silent Numbers - The Skylar Band, Favors and $31 TATTOOS Available all night long. For real."

At the Baghdad - it's LIVE music onstage followed by a showing of The Howling. Garcia Birthday Band plays 2 sets - starting @ 6 another at 8. There's activities for the kids until 8 too.

At Redux on Burnside - it's the Muertos PDX art show running from this week until November 29. Dozens of works by Portland artists and more expanding on the Day of the Dead theme.

Sunday night may be the creepiest of all. As a former Manson-o-phile, I had heard stories about The Process Church if the Final Judgment (a group which never actually had any association with the notorious cult leader) so I was intrigued to see a flyer for one of their church services in my hood Sunday night at Mississippi Studios.

Turns out, it's a recreation of one of the 1960s psychedelic services, pledging homage to Jesus and Satan, musicians performing Process hymns - alongside the release of a new book about the church by Feral Press.
Basically black robes, goat heads and indie rock.

There will be a "parlor" talk after about the group and all kinds of occult intrigue, I imagine.
Hot day+naked bike riders, if that's your thing.

Here's more -

Per PDXPipeline and BikePortland.org:

"For the sake of the shoot we would rather no tall bikes or abnormally small bikes, it's just easier on the camera guy, George. Though if some show up I'm sure they will figure it out. We are looking for things to be as natural as possible so we are discouraging costumes and body paint. Though if people want to make themselves shiny with baby oil or something, that will play off the lights well!"

"Flaming Lips naked bike video shoot
Wednesday, September 23, 10am - 10pm (drop-in)

I was aware of the spicy take on Korean BBQ meets Mexican fare, yet wasn't prepare for the cravings that have hung around my mouth.
The tacos and burritos, superb, with chicken or rib meat, steak plus kimchee and some hot sauce.
But the sliders, oh mamacita! Three sliders for $6, I got the rib meat (there's also sliced steak on my horizon)
And they're always on the move - follow Koi on Twitter by checking out their site. They're also prowling the TBA (Time Based Art) festival at PICA in the Pearl.

Plus - a Portland gang is trying to re-erect Old Town's iconic Hung Far Low restaurant sign! And the benefit festival features : Diamond Tuck, Pinehurst Kids, Boo Frog, Nether Regions, The Rosenbalms, Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers at Satyricon Friday night.
Your host - guess - Tres Shannon, a doy.

More pie in the summer!

This year Portland Pietopia asked cooks to describe their present state of existence through flavor, and smells, and perhaps, memories, longings, stories to come up with a recipe.

The winners have been picked (and I am told there's a fantastic rabbit white wine pie!)
These creative folks have sweet, savory, tart and flaky.

Come down to the Eastbank Farmer's Market at SE 20th and Salmon from 3:30-6:30 to taste!

From Tricia Martin
The Pietopia Pie Contest

"What does it taste like to be unemployed, in a band, starting a new job, surfing, dancing, going crazy, just married, a grandma, undecided, divorced, having a child, grounded, surviving something big and scary, a student, a new homeowner or desperately searching for housing?" the call to entry asks, "What kind of pie would describe the way you are feeling right now? Could you imagine your thoughts, concerns or joys transformed into the All-American Pie?"
For the past 2 years, these questions have been opened up to our city of Portland, OR to find out what the true flavor of peoples lives are. The individuals' experiences join together to create the flavors of each community as a whole. It is very honest, revealing and delicious!
The contest is marketed through hand made silk-screened posters hung around town, email lists, newspaper articles, blogs, and word of mouth. People enter via email and submit to pietopiacontest@gmail.com. There is a panel of judges from various places across the country, to ensure a fair, unbiased, and discerning approach. They judge based on how well the entrants follow the criteria of clearly and evocatively explaining how their lives relate to the flavors and nuances in their pie.
Winners then bring their pies and people are offered small samples, to taste the flavor of their community's lives. The winners each receive a unique, hand silk-screened poster, a visual reinterpretation of their submission created by a local artist/designer. These are also on display at the tasting giving people a full-sensory experience: the taste of the pies, the visual of the poster, and the conversation and connections to the stories.
