Not to be too verbose, but Portland likes to extol its love of the written word, Powell's, a top notch college writing program and a lengthy list of accomplished writers -- it's summed up in the annual Wordstock festival this weekend headquartered at the Convention Center.

Come for the book fair, poetry slam, authors, workshops and the Oregon book awards Sunday night.

At the Schnitz -- it's a tribute to Jimi Hendrix as the Experience Hendrix tour rolls in.

With original bandmates Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox -- other stars jump on board -- Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robby Krieger, Hubert Sumlin, Chris Layton, Mike McCready --I know you've heard the whine and fuzz in their chops.

Over at Dante's Saturday, two gents from Montreal known as The King Kahn BBQ Show tear up some fuzzy garage vein-iness, real guitars, vocals and beats. Yes real - I mean not made by a laptop.

The Blazers haven't been so much animals this year on the court yet, but are helping out a hard working local pet hospital starting Saturday with the pet food drive for DoveLewis:

"Fans can bring new, unopened pet food to the Trail Blazers' 7 p.m. match-up against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Monetary donations are also accepted.

The drive is in support of the third annual Season of Suppers, a national pet food drive for pets in need. The season runs from Nov. 1 - Dec. 31 and is put on by Meals On Wheels Association of America and Banfield Pet Hospital, the nation's largest private veterinary practice.
Fans that are unable to make a food or monetary donation at the game can drop their contribution off at any of Banfield's 12 Portland-area locations until Dec. 31."
