Gourmet Magazine is out with its latest "Restaurant Issue" featuring what it calls the 100 best farm-to-table restaurants in America. No surprise that Portland gets a healthy representation. No surprise either that Higgins Restaurant gets the largest nod, with a short write-up as a local pioneer in the "Urban" category. Gourmet acknowledges the obvious fresh fish dishes, but really singles it out for its cured meats. Not just prosciutto, either - it says to check out choucroute garne season in February for "sauerkraut heaped with a battery of sausages and a smoked pork loin so good it'll make your head swim." I'm not sure what choucroute garne means, but it sounds good to me. And here's a surprise - Northwest fast-food chain Burgerville gets a mention in the "casual" category, alongside local faves Fife and Vindalho. Can't wait for those sweet potato fries. Make sure to check out story online - you'll find expanded reviews of the restaurants mentioned above. |
