Winter Blast

5:50 PM Tue, Nov 29, 2005 |

This time of year we get many questions, compliments and complaints about our weather coverage. So I thought it would be a good thing to discuss weather reporting here in my blog.

The week started off with bitterly cold temperatures and icy roads on Monday morning. Commuters had a heck of a time getting to work. Our crews were busy on the ground and from Sky 8 keeping up with all the car accidents. Then, yesterday, we were told that we...

NewsChannel 8 Webcast

5:40 PM Mon, Nov 28, 2005 |

Today we launched a NewsChannel 8 "Webcast" on kgw.com. This was a specially-produced newscast for kgw.com. It will be anchored each afternoon by Tracy Barry. The Webcast will run about 5 minutes or less each day. It will contain the day's top stories and other news that you may or may not see on KGW-TV. The Webcast is all part of our effort to give you news when you want it - On Demand - rather than just at appointed hours like 5 p.m. or 11 p...

Today's Nike plane coverage

5:37 PM Mon, Nov 21, 2005 |

What a news day! It started out quietly, but just before 9 a.m. we learned that a Nike executive jet was having trouble with its landing gear. Soon we found ourselves in wall-to-wall coverage as the Nike pilot tried to figure out a way to get the landing gear down. We deployed reporters to Portland International Airport (where we believed the plane might make an emergency landing after burning off fuel). We also sent reporters to Hillsboro Air...

Welcome to my blog

4:16 PM Thu, Nov 17, 2005 |

My name is Rod Gramer. I'm the executive news director at KGW Northwest NewsChannel 8. Welcome to my blog. I plan to write regularly in this space to help explain what happens behind the scenes here at NewsChannel 8. I find that many people are very interested in how the news is produced and why we make the editorial decisions we make. I often hear from viewers that are either happy with something we have done or unhappy. My hope is that I can...
