~Good for You E. coli?!~

Yes, yes, yes, it's true!! Most E. coli is either a) potentially good for you or at the most b) harmless. There are hundreds of strains..

Let's give you the black sheep of the E. coli family first: O157:H7. This is the one that has killed people or made them horribly sick after eating contaminated meat that was not cooked to a high enough temperature.

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/escherichiacoli_g.htm

But here's a little bit more on some of the other strains:

I loved this writeup.. but if you're fading on me because you can't quite possibly understand why I am facinated by E. coli then at least scroll down to the part about vitamin K.

http://www.microbiologyonline.org.uk/ecoli.htm

This is a bit jargony, but I thought some of the testing they explain was interesting, too:
http://www.textbookofbacteriology.net/e.coli.html

Now, let's get to the other big story of the day.. the antidepressant story that covers Prozac and other drugs like it in its class:

Good link here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23348068/

http://www.nursingtimes.net/clinicalnews/2008/02/antidepressants_such_as_prozac_not_clinically_effective.html

Now, this story out of Australia is particularly well done, as it takes the time to address the study with a measure of depth as well as address its limitations. If you have a friend on Prozac or one of the other drugs like it.. this is a good link to forward on:
http://www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2008/s2173279.htm

I hope you find that stuff helpful.

Random picture of the day. As I've mentioned I shop for groceries at two places.. the New Seasons on my way home (Hi, Leslie!) and the Safeway by my house. Well, the parking lot at the New Seasons is quite an experience if you drive a wide car like mine. I docked (as I call it) the other day and as I was walking away turned back and started to laugh. Look at how we ALL managed to liberally interpret what it means to STAY WITHIN THE PARKING LOT LINES!! Totally funny.

Have a great day!! sstricklen@kgw.com

~Plastic Panic~

Now.. I'm going to give you a few links on that plastics story I worked on for noon this Monday. But, if this is an issue that troubles you, I encourage you to look into it on your own. Be aware that if you do a google search for phthalates, etc... you will get a number of biased websites that pop up immediately-- both for and against the use of these compounds. And sometimes it's hard to tell where the bias lays.

What I can do is get you started with some Centers For Disease Control & Prevention information that will lead to other sites.
http://www.cdc.gov/exposurereport/pdf/factsheet_phthalates.pdf

Here is a link from an enviromental group firmly opposed to the use of these compounds:
http://www.ewg.org/node/25808

And here is an industry association website emphasizing the current scientific understanding of these chemicals.
http://www.phthalates.org/index.asp

And while I'm flat out of time.. let me share this last link with you to an older USA Today article on bisphenol-A:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2007-08-08-bisphonolA_N.htm

I hope this gives you a start!!

~Whoot whoot, Friday!!~

Yay, Friday. Yay, yay, yay.

Okay. Let's give you the skinny on vitamin D and tanning beds and all that good jazz.

First, Dr. Hahn says in the winter months she doesn't have a problem with using a tanning bed that has UVB rays.. IF YOU USE IT FOR LIKE 4 MINUTES. And there lies the rub. If you go to a tanning salon, my guess is you're going to get a tan and that is most definitely not what Dr. Hahn is suggesting. And she's not a fan of the beds that offer UVA rays.. very damaging and of no benefit to you in terms of vitamin D production.

Now, she has her patients take between 1,000 and 2,000 units of vitamin d, but she stresses this is well above current recommendations and you shouldn't start popping supplements willy nilly until you talk to you own health care provider.

In terms of which type of vitamin D works best.. she likes D3. Here's more for you to check out.

~Apnea & the Eclipse!!~

((eclipse stuff and online health info below....))

Hey.. worn out women (and men).. here is more on the sleep apnea story that is running tonite at 11pm. Yeah, I will be sound asleep myself when it airs so you get this early.

http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/tc/sleep-apnea-symptoms

And here is another, longer writeup from the NIH:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000811.htm

And here is the local clinic we featured in our story:
http://www.oregonsleepassociates.com/

Now onto the online health records... google and Microsoft style:

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/02/21/google-health-begins-its-preseason-at-cleveland-clinic/?ref=technology

And, more eclipse photos are coming in... this one is really a spectacular shot.. It comes to us from Darla. I almost made it my screensaver.

Lunar%20Eclipse-crpd.jpg

A big thanks to Herb and Gracie who sent me these eclipse photos last night.. I wandered outside with my husband to check it out. I must have watched it for, like, 10 minutes.. as if the moon was going to start doing cartwheels or something. But, the red glow of the moon really is cool to see, and I feel like we miss a lot of the fun astronomical stuff here in the northwest because of our weather. So, this was a nice treat.

Here's a great writeup on it!!

~Stroke & Stem Cells~

Animal research is one of those tricky topics to cover. There are people who firmly believe all animal testing is inhumane, cruel, and largely unnecessary. There are others who believe most animal testing meets this criteria. And there is a majority of Americans who either don't have an opinion or believe it's 100% needed if we are to find a cure for the diseases that plague our society.

This is not that debate. But I'm conscious of it every time I work on a story that involves lab animals. I choose my words carefully.

What interests me about today's story that I ran at noon is that it deals with stroke and the combination of two controversial topics: (the highly controversial) human embryonic stem cells and (the somewhat controversial) animal research.. and what researchers pulled off (at least in the lab). That's a lot of parenthesis (because I can).

You can read more on the stroke discovery here:
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/97778.php

Here is a great write-up that is very easy to understand:
http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSN1960584920080220

I looked on the publications website to find the actual published study itself.. but it's searching incredibly slow and the link at the end of that article above is not currently working. That's okay.. I imagine most of you don't care to try and decipher the medical jargon, anyway.

Hey.. feel free to email me if you have any thoughts on this:

.:PIX: cute animals, cuter babies:.

It's "Meh, Mondays".. and I've been out of the office shooting an upcoming story since this morning. So, no health stuff to post today. Instead, let me brighten your day with two things I really groove on: kids and animals. I've got some cute stuff, too.

First, Blog Buddy Joe has the world's most adorable boy Zak. You could almost have a caption contest for this one:
seriouszakary.jpg
In his bid for the 2008 presidential race, Zak announced Ted E. Bear as his running mate.

Yet another example of what happens when two pretty people have kids. I mean, honestly.. is Siena a cute baby or what?

And McGorge Scott has a few totally stellar photos. He should make a coffee table book, eh?

.:Got Teens? Read THIS:.

Hey.. normally on Valentine's day I go on and on about flowers (first I don't want them, then I do), chocolates (like just one or two.. I definitely don't need the whole box), and a bunch of other light-hearted fun stuff (red wine is good for your heart). But not today. This story is important, and if you have teens I'd like you to see it. Since I'm having a heckuva time finding the press release on-line anywhere.. please forgive me for just doing a copy/paste in here.

Tomorrow, I'll post some fun pictures for you...

Here it is:

SURPRISING NEW RESEARCH PROVIDES FIRST CLEAR EVIDENCE THAT DATING ABUSE, VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ACTIVITY START AT AGE 11

RESEARCH UNCOVERS A SIGNIFICANT CONNECTION BETWEEN EARLY SEXUAL BEHAVIOR AND EXTREMELY HIGH LEVELS OF DATING VIOLENCE AND ABUSE AMONG OLDER TEENS

A disturbing Half of all teenage girls in relationships (48%) say they have been victims of verbal, physical and sexual abuse by their boyfriends, BUT for teens who had sex by age 14, an alarming 69% said they were victims of this abuse.

National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) along with the National Domestic Violence Hotline and Liz Claiborne Inc. launch new urgent national education campaign to ensure parents, teachers and students are educated about the issues at stake

FACT: 72% of TWEENS say boyfriend/girlfriend relationships usually begin at age 14 or younger; more than one in three 11- 13 year olds (37%) report they have been in a relationship;

FACT: More than 1 in 4 (28%) TWEENS say sexual activity is part of boyfriend/girlfriend relationships for tweens (11 - 14 year olds) 1 in 3 in relationships say their friends engage in sex;

FACT: 1 in 5 (20%) of all 13- 14 year old TWEENs in relationships say their friends have been have been struck, hit, slapped in anger by a boyfriend/girlfriend, nearly half of these same pre-adolescents (47%) say their friends are in verbally abusive dating relationships;

FACT: Data reveals a direct correlation between having sex before the age of 14 and abusive relationships;

For example:

Among all teens, ages 15- 18, one in ten (10%) admit they have been kicked, punched, hit by their partner; IN CONTRAST - one out of three teens who had sex by age 14 (33%) admit they have been physically abused by their partner.

More than one in three teens (36%) report that their partners wanted to know where they were all the time (36%) and who they were with all the time (37%) IN CONTRAST among teens who had sex before age 14, their experiences with power and control are much higher- 58% and 59% respectively.

SURVEY RESULTS:

Announcement of new survey on Tween (11-14) and Teen Dating Violence and Abuse, conducted by Teenage Research Unlimited (TRU) and initiated and supported by The National Domestic Violence Hotline and Liz Claiborne Inc, details how dating relationships among tweens begin much earlier than expected, sex is considered a part of a normal tween relationship and tweens are reporting significant levels of abusive behavior in relationships.

The survey provides frightening evidence that many parents think they know what their tweens are up to, but many don’t have any idea-from being in dating relationships starting as young as 11 to actual physical violence. Tween dating abuse and sexual activity fuels and intensifies teen dating abuse.

.:Worst Foods EVER & Longevity:.

Alrighty then... let's start with the worst chain restaurant foods that I talked about this in the 5am hour of our morning show... here's the link:
http://www.menshealth.com/20worst/

Frankly, I'm shocked to learn about those cheese fries. I actually don't order that kind of stuff, so I found myself clicking on things like the salad, starter, and fish entree (WOW). What about you?

By the way.. click on the "healthy" burger, too. This is why I have an iPhone.. so I can scope out online nutritional info before I order. Sheesh.

NEXT: the 4 changes to add 14 years to your life. Here is a small blurb on one study.. along with some additional links that essentially draw the same conclusion:

.:Sweetners make you fat:.

....so says this study we talked about in our morning and noon show on this Monday:

http://www.latimes.com/features/health/la-sci-dietsoda11feb11,1,395760.story

I wanted to give you the full writeup on it.. also, here is the information on the islet transplant for diabetes as it pertains to having the procedure done in the states...

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/islet-cell-transplant/DA00046

And, this morning, we talked about that grocery store chain no longer selling tobacco products.. Wegmans, which has 70 some odd stores in 5 states, mostly east. I think that's a huge 'talker' story, don't you? I think there is a bigger debate there..

Here is a statement from the American Lung Association.. an east coast chapter:

OKAY: neti pot comments!!

Terri writes: I first heard about the neti pot while watching Dr. Oz on Oprah. I have had sinusitis every since I moved here from the desert of the Tri-Cities 12 years ago. I couldn't find a pot at the time, but I bought a squeeze bottle made by a company that also makes a neti pot, it works the same way. I love it, it even helps to unplug my ears. I never realized they were plugged up. I would recommend them to everyone, even if you don't have sinus problems, to keep it that way.

Since I bought mine, I have seen them in the drug stores, they probably received many requests for them after others also saw them on Oprah.

It really does work!!!

Sharon writes: I don't use a Neti pot, but I use a baby nose syringe for the same thing. I can't say enough good stuff about the saline solution to flush out the nasal passages. It's made a world of difference for me. Before using it, I had constant problem with stuffy nose, allergies and asthma. I am happy to say I no longer wake up in the night with stuffy nose. I still have asthma, but I've cut WAY back on my rescue inhaler.

And for those of you who want to know where to get them.. you'll have to do your own digging, sorry!! But I will remind you that we featured Whole Foods in our story as a place that carries them, so put your sinuses on alert!

Leslie sent an ADORABLE picture of her dog Peanut. I mean seriously cute.

.: The Nose Bidet :.

After doing this story that runs tonite (Thursday) at 5pm, I've decided I like the neti pot. Never used one, don't think I'll need to, BUT what a great simple idea that doesn't involve drugs or a lot of money. Speaking of money.. the naturopath I spoke to says skip the fancy add ons. Just salt and water and a neti pot is all you need.

Here's more on this little nasal wonder courtesy of Oprah:

Do you sleep enough??!

Do you sleep enough??

I actually do, even on this crazy schedule. But, I sleep in two shifts (9pm to 3am-ish.. and 1pm to 4pm) so that I can hang out with my husband when he gets home from work. Honestly, it hasn't been too tough of a transition, although people who really know me were a bit surprised to hear how well I took to this schedule (I greatly value my sleep).

Back to the matter at hand. I found this article which ties in perfectly to tonite's 11pm story... also talks about the single biggest reason women end up with sleep problems. Did you guess correctly?
http://psychologytoday.com/articles/index.php?term=pto-20031028-000007.xml&page=2

Even for good, sound sleepers like me.. it's an interesting read.

And the doctor we interviewed is the Medical Director here:

I have a boatload of pictures to share.. with some cute kiddos coming (hopefully) tomorrow. in the meantime, which one of these animals doesn't fit in?? ((Thanks McGorge Scott, as always))

.:I "heart" James Jones:.~

I'm telling you guys.. these Blazers are great guys. You might remember me going on and on about LaMarcus a while back and now I could go on and on about another player-- James Jones. He was at the Schoolhouse Supplies Celebrity Spelling Bee last night and I (again) was very impressed. He took AP history and someone told me he was an academic all-star. Funny, smart guy who was very nice. Way to go Blazers. I don't know a jump shot from a blocked shot (I even had to ask for help for those basketball terms) but I do know I'm very excited to see my next Blazers game. Anyone want to teach me about basketball??

Here's a picture of me with our emcee for the evening.. John Erickson from K103!!
stefjohnk103.JPG

And no.. I didn't win. I really thought I'd go out first, which isn't a bad thing. More fun to heckle, really.

Have a wonderful weekend!! sstricklen@kgw.com
