Wow. I just realized this is my last blog.
I managed to get tomorrow (Saturday) off and then I work nights Sunday for the closing ceremony. I have a quick turnaround and a live shot for Monday morning and then we begin the process of tearing down the workspace and packing up everything. It's an odd feeling to know you are almost done, really. I've been down this road before.
By my math I've done about 100 live shots, 80 radio hits for 7 different stations, and 10 or 11 blog entries. I've racked up 127 hours of overtime and have slept an average of 4.5 hours a night.
I wish I could show you.. REALLY show you the full experience of what it means to cover the Olympics. It is the most random, most taxing, most stressful, and most fun you can cram into 4 weeks. It's just the sort of thing you can't explain very well unless you've done it.
Here's a picture of me with Bode's best friend Jake Serino. I did a story with him in his and Bode's RV. It was really nice to get his take on his best friend.. an athlete everyone feels like they already know. I didn't meet Bode so I can't answer your questions about what he's like.. and honestly, how well do you really get to know someone in the span of one handshake, anyway? That said, sometimes you do get vibes from people. Jake seems like a very cool, very laid-back guy who is out to maximize the opportunity he's been given. I liked telling you about his story because it's the kind of thing that you would never know otherwise.. and stories like his are happening all over the place here. Most will never see the light of day, but they are there... and are equally as interesting.

Here is a link to Jake's blog: http://www.nbcolympics.com/bodebyjake/index.html
My last QRT:
To my husband John: I can't tell you how much I miss you and how much I hate not being able to call or talk to you more than once a week. I'm so excited to come home and spend quality time with you. You're not going to be able to keep me quiet I have so much to tell you. I love you and don't think I can spend this kind of time away from you again.
To my mom and dad (my biggest fans): I love you and thanks so much for your emails. I'm sorry I didn't have more time to respond in-depth. I know you understand and I will keep my eyes out for that necklace you want, mom. Dad.. how about some Italian olives??
To my other mom and dad (John's parents): I can't wait for Taco Tuesday!! I love the pasta here but wouldn't mind mixing it up. We have to eat at the workspace and it's the same food every day. Just like ice cream or chocolate.. I can't eat it every meal of every day.. no matter how good it is.
To my Aunt Maria in Sydney: You get the first place prize for checking out my stuff from the farthest distance. Enjoy a Pollywaffle and some Vegemite for me and tell everyone I said "G'day"! Love you, Steph
To Aaron Weiss: You rock. End of story. No one knows what you went through to get our stuff on the air. You worked crazy hours back home in Portland (I know this because we'd chat on the phone at 2am Portland time). Thanks for everything.
To everyone who asked me to buy them stuff and bring it back.. I'm zero for 50 on those requests.. including the yummy chocolates that I would get half of for free. SORRY!!!! If I had more room in my suitcase and more time.. I totally would.
To everyone who was kind enough to send along your thoughts, ideas, questions and comments.. thank you!!! I read *every* last one and replied to about 90%. The remaining 10% will have to wait until I get back from vacation!! Hope that's okay!
To Gina: Go now and get on that plane and get over here!!! ((that, my friend, is a shout-out)).
I'm back in mid-march with no email access starting Monday. Ciao!! Steph
sstricklen@kgw.com
How's this for random??
When the really nice gals come to clean my room.. they have zero reservations about doing it while I'm inside trying to get ready. It cracks me up so much I don't even care. I just let them do thier thing all around me. Today they changed the sheets on the bed while all my stuff was still on it. The rooms are small too, so it can get tight. 90% of the time I am not in my room when they clean so it's not an issue. Here's a blurry photo of Lisa's room (producer) to give you some idea of the size. Mine looks just like it except I don't have a balcony. I like the rooms better here than I did in Athens. It's a little bit quieter (notice I didn't say quiet.. just "quieter") and we haven't had any flooding problems or middle of the night fire-alarm evacuations.

If I am lacking a balcony, the one thing I DO have is a really awesome view of the fireworks from the 14th floor.. right out my window. It finally dawned on me the other day I should snap a photo. This is the best one I could get which doesn't do it justice. They happen about 8:40 every night and I am rarely back in my room in time, which is okay... I've seen them 3 times and absolutely love it!!

Okay, off to the mountains. Long day. Go Speedy!!!!!
email me: sstricklen@kgw.com
Likening my voice to the sound of a goose getting slowly run over by farm equipment was probably not the most delicate way to describe it on the radio this morning (MIX 107.5) but I swear that's how it sounds to me... especially when I first wake up.
That said, things are lookin' up. As the day went on and my voice warmed up various people (like Brenda Braxton, or the folks over at KINK) described it as "sultry". I think I sound like a large man, so I'll take sultry ANY day.
Here's a picture of me WEARING Kelly Stephens bronze medal for Team USA women's hockey.

I didn't want to put it on at first because I almost felt guilty. I mean, it's a medal and it's pretty special, etc. etc. And I've been to 2 Olympics prior to this and have never, ever worn an athlete's medal... but she was so cool and having such a blast watching my colleague Mimi Jung wear it that I finally decided I couldn't resist. Yup, there is that broad Joker grin (think Batman) that proves to you I'm having a good time.
So, I'm very fired up about this top secret story that I hope I get to cover. I can't tell you yet for fear that if I mention it.. something will happen and it will end up getting flushed. I will tell you that there is a Bode Miller connection. I've never met him so I don't know if he's a decent guy or not, but I have talked to one of his friends who seems very cool. I don't know how you feel about it, but I think you can tell a lot about a person by the company he/she keeps.
I'll keep you posted about the story... and no, it does not involve me asking Bode to teach me how to ski... although if I got to wear one of those little kid harnesses so I wouldn't rocket down the mountain to my certain death.. I'd totally do it just for kicks.
I got the BEST pictures of the fireworks you can see out of the window of my 14th floor dorm at the Mortara media village. Maybe tomorrow I'll post those.
In the meantime, here is a photo I titled "shorty".

Apparently, I'm so short (since when is 5'4" short, anyway?) that the phojos make me stand on that sandbag to raise me up couple of inches. Honestly, pretty much all of the other on-air gals around this joint wear fancy shoes with heels or stylish boots. That would give me a few inches, but I'm just lucky if I remember to put two socks on before slipping on my sneakers in the morning. Heels don't cut it for me given how much walking I'm doing. Looks like it's the sandbag for me.
Did you see me yesterday doing my live shot with my channel 8 hat? I have to wear all this makeup on TV so it started to look kind of gross. I washed it in the sink at the workspace and tried to dry it on one of the warm TVs (with our ops managers approval, of course.. I don't need to be the one who blows the master fuse in the workspace). It didn't work and I had to wear it wet on the air.
The world's fastest QRT ('cuz I'm pooped and need to go back to the dorm):
Dan Browne: HOW ARE YOU??!! ((He's the marathon and running superstar I covered in Greece.)) I still owe you that CD of my kind of music!!!! I still haven't forgotten. I'll drop you a proper email tomorrow!
Rick: Wow. Joe Donlon had time to go shopping in Salt Lake city for the Olympics? Must be nice. ((ohhhhh, that was a good dig, huh Donlon? I'm just teasing).
Miss Myrna!! I bet it's colder where you are than where I am. And you are too tiny, I'd totally whoop you in a gellato eating contest. Tell Scott I said hi!!
Mom and Dad: I love you both!! Now that the Olympics are on I bet you can both agree on what to watch on TV, haha!!
Send me an email: sstricklen@kgw.com
There is no graceful way to put this: I sound like an idiot when I order a coffee here.
The culture is so different from America. My favorite coffee drink in Italy is a cappucino, but I was just reading on-line that you will raise eyebrows if you order one in the afternoon. It's a drink intended for the morning only. I asked one of our drivers to teach me how to say "I'm sorry, I'm a tourist" so they get it when it's 4pm and I'm craving one. Spelled somewhat phonetically (I think) it sounds like this, "mi diaspatche, sono una tourista."
I had a day off yesterday and it was sooooo nice. I never got a day off in Greece and I used most of yesterday to sleep. I've picked up a cold and plan to head home and conk out for 8 hours before I have to get back to work. It snowed these heavy, wet flakes all over downtown and made things look beautiful. And the snow didn't stick on the roads which made getting around today a little easier than I anticipated.
Here's a shot of Mike Redding, a reporter/host based out of Charlotte (he works for WCNC). Look at the snow sticking to him!!

So, have you ever done this?? Last night I was talking to my husband and I told him to put the dog on the phone so I could say hi. My poor husband. I could just tell how nice he was trying to be when he gently said, "Ummm, sweetheart.. the dog doesn't really know it's you when you talk to him on the phone." But god bless him, he played along with me and sure enough Milo could have cared less. My husband is probably the most patient man on the planet.
Wait.. one more snow photo to show you... Andy Benton took this:

He works with Mike at WCNC as a photographer and I get such a kick out of him. We're like the odd couple. The other day he walks up to me and says, "How do you do it?".. and I'm thinking 'do what?'. He says after taking a long, deep breath, "How are you always so...... happy?". I'm telling you, I really do get teased here in the workspace by my co-workers because I'm always smiling and bopping around no matter how little sleep I'm getting. Most people here are surly, sick, or just plain worn out as they shuffle to and from the live shot platform. I can't blame them. Maybe it's the coffee I'm drinking. Normally I drink decaf and the Italians know how to make a strong shot of espresso.
QRT:
Linda writes: I noticed you mentioned Evergreen Curling on your blog - can you do the
same for Mountain View Speedskating? http://www.mountainviewspeedskating.org
Thanks! Enjoy Torino! Go USA!! Linda, there you go!!
Sue: I am not covering the paralympic games. The station only has me here through the 29th. Here is a link: http://www.paralympicgames.torino2006.org/
Megan: I have no idea what the blue lines on the snow are made of (to mark the course). It reminds me of Kool Aid, though.
Shelia writes: You may know that 3 of the players on the Slovakia hockey team played in Portland for the Winterhawks! Richard Zednick and brothers Marcel and Marian Hossa (their father is the Olympic coach). It's great to see them playing hockey together. I believe former Winterhawk, Jakub Klepis, is on the roster but hasn't yet hit the ice. Shelia, THANKS for letting me know!!! I would have had NO idea!!
Mark: Sarah Hughes (the ice skater) took her medal and went professional. She's making a ton of money working as a commentator for NBC. That's why she's not competing against (or with) her younger sister.
Kim: If I could buy you some cool Olympic stuff like shirts I totally would, but I tell you what..... it's WAY expensive. Someone is making a fortune off this stuff. I went to the Olympic superstore and didn't buy a thing. They have these fun cowbells which are at every Olympics that cost $25 euro EACH. Sheesh.
AND TO MY HUSBAND JOHN: I know I keep telling you this when we talk on the phone, but I absolutely, positively can not wait to see you in a few more weeks. Thank you for holding down the fort, listening to me whine and always being there for me. I miss you!!!!! xoxoxo
Drop me an email!!!!!! sstricklen@kgw.com
Hey!! Guess what?! I have FINALLY solved the photo problems I was having.. and Photojournalist Rod Stevens gets to post his missing blog. Yay!! It's funny because I basically send my blog to Portland and then Portland sends it back to Italy to this company that then posts them in the Ozone area (www.nbcolympics.com). Well, I made direct contact with the company here and it graciously agreed to expedite fixing the problems.
If you're reading this then you are checking out the health blog as opposed to the mirror image at www.nbcolympics.com. This health blog has been problem free because I have control over it.
You get a bonus photo: this is Mark Johnson from KTVB in Boise Idaho. Those are the mics we use here to "track our audio" (translation: record our voice on tape). You push it against your upper lip and it cuts out almost all of the background noise. But, I bet if you listen closely you can hear that it sounds a little funny.

What else is new? Well, the hours are longer than Greece because I have to come in so early to send back audio for my stories. As a result I haven't been out on the town yet, but that's okay. I got to see THE coolest thing ever: freestyle aerial skiing practice. I went up there to snag an interview with an athlete who has ties to our area.
Take some time and look up Joe Pack who was born in Springfield. He now calls Utah home. This guy has a great story and might even end up on a future "Apprentice" series with Donald Trump, if you vote for him (again, www.nbcolympics.com). He's going to kill me for suggesting that since he says he is totally ambivalent about doing it.
His sport is quite possibly the most visually frightening thing I have ever seen. I mean, I've seen it on TV, but never with my own two eyes. He basically rockets himself down the mountain.. hits a jump.. willingly flings himself into the air 55 to 60 feet.. and just to further increase the odds of a catastrophic outcome… tosses in a bunch of flips and twists, etc.
Let's just say it's not curling ((which I think is a hoot, but you’re not likely to kill yourself doing it)).
New topic: ask Lisa (the producer here who is also blogging) and she'll tell you I am hyper-organized… like to the point where I get teased. I have to be because I’m so flighty/distracted/tired in other regards that having my stuff in order keeps me on track when I’m here. Well, the other day I’m doing an interview with Joe Pack and I’m showing him my 4” thick Olympic bible (as I call it) and I tell him that if I ever lost it I would be sunk. It’s a binder that contains my life here.. all my story ideas and contacts and calendars etc.
That very night I lost it.
It turned up two days later.
Here is a list of items that I have lost and recovered.. in order.
Ponytail holder (still lost)
Black frame glasses (still lost)
Olympic binder (recovered)
IFB (recovered)
Scarf (recovered)
Makeup bag (recovered)
IFB (again, recovered)
Shoes (recovered)
Phone (multiple times, recovered)
Phone case (left it out at the live shot location)
My head (obviously still lost)
QRT
Gregg: you have great stories. I should also keep my camera with me. You never know when I might run into someone I’d like to have a photo with.
Sally: The ice sculptures sound like a great story idea, but unfortunately I am tied to my live shots which doesn’t leave me time to go the mountains. We went up there once and I had to blow off an hour of live shots, which is frowned upon.
Hubert: Yes, Portland physically could host an Olympics.. but would it. That is the question.
Ed & Mary: Thanks for the suggestions on what to buy here. And yes, the few times I’ve eaten out the food has been GREAT!!
Penny: If you are watching during the Ozone show then that is taped. If you are watching during the morning show or 11:30/midnite newscast then that it live. Does that help?
Hey Manny: You make a better argument than I ever could for me getting a raise. Maybe I’ll call you the next time my contract comes around, haha!!
Ryan: Yes.. Lisa is married to Matt and Lisa and I are traveling together through Italy and will be joined by another girlfriend in early March. Fun, huh??
Email me: sstricklen@kgw.com
Here is that curling link I was telling you about at 5pm:
http://www.evergreencurling.org/
And here is one of my more favorite photos. It's of a menu at a pizza restaurant that tried to translate the menu items into english. Do you spot the problem?

Turns out "garden rocket" is arugula. And the pizza here is better than any pizza I've ever had.
QRT: Josh, yes.. I am definitely being careful over here. We got a safety briefing that talked about the dangers and as a result I now catch a cab at 6 in the morning instead of making the 25 minute walk by myself in the dark. It's expensive too (20 euro one way) but I am not about to get mugged carrying all my backpacks, computers etc. Torino is actually very safe, but the Olympics bring in all kinds of trouble as people come here just to look for easy targets.
Jeffrey: I have a cool story coming up on bobsled. I hope you catch it. It will most likely run the day bobsled competitions begin. I don't have my calendar in front of me.
Michael: Oh yeah, we will DEFINITELY do a pin trading story at some future point. I mean, you simply have to have them here.. it's just so odd if you really think about it. Your pin sounds cool.
Karen: What I wouldn't give to have the time to get out of town. As it is I "run and gun" all day and have a shockingly little amount of time to shoot stories (daily approximately from 10am to 2pm Italy time *including* travel which eats up a ton of time).
Kent: The Olympics assignment is one that everyone totally wants until they do it once. It is significantly harder than it looks. That's why stations send the same people every time. Institutional knowledge of how this works is so key. You should email Lisa Helderop lhelderop@kgw.com and ask her to blog about her thoughts. This is her first Olympics and there is so much to learn!
Walter: I know.. the berets are HUGE again this Olympics. The thing is I highly doubt I will even have a single day to go shopping while I'm here. And you should have seen the emails pour in for requests. I'd need a whole suitcase to stash everything. Please tell your wife I said "Hi".
Ron: Speaking of shopping requests I got a real kick out of yours and am thrilled that you picked something small!! But, alas... I don't think my boss would approve of me buying you a shot glass. ;-)
Renee: I would definitely come back for a vacation. Downtown Torino is gorgeous!! The outlying areas feel a little industrial, but I think the central part of the city is wonderful.
Keith: I am into halfpipe, anything with Bode, and curling. But all of it is so cool... really!! I love to see strong and talented women compete!! Go Team USA!!!
Dorsie: Thank you for the NICEST email. I have kept it on my blackberry so when I'm feeling rundown I can look at it and remind myself why I'm here. Thanks!!!
Bruce: You'll have to get in line if you want to work as a grip/photographer/etc at the Olympics. That and I have 12 people who want to fit into my suitcase.
Brandy: No.. I didn't get in to Opening Ceremony. And I SO can't afford a ticket!!! I wish I could! That's okay. NBC does a great job of covering it.
Rob: I am taking time off. 13 days to be exact. I'm headed to Florence, Rome, Venice and Paris. Having never been to Italy before I am very excited!!
Louie: It sounds like your business is located in a great part of town. I love NW Portland. As for the wine here.. I haven't had much of a chance to get out on the town. I have stopped for pizza and very quickly learned how to ask for a recommendation on the menu.
Jennifer: No, I totally don't mind people coming up to say hi. Although, if I look like I'm having a bad day maybe it's not the best time to tell me what you think about my hair/appearance/etc.. haha!! You know, I had a woman once tell me I looked skinnier in person than I did on TV. No matter which way you slice it... it's a slam. :-)
Miss Lynne!!!!! I miss you and loved getting your email. Sorry I don't have time for a proper response. We have to catch up when I get back!!
To my husband: I miss you. Tomorrow is Valentine's day and I wish we were together. I love you. Pets to Milo for me.
sstricklen@kgw.com
Rod's mom DID write to me (see previous blog) but what I really want her to see is the photo of her son as it was originally taken... high atop Torino's tallest building the Mole Antonelliana.

And here is a picture of Rod's pants. Yeah, you read that correctly.

The laundry system here is TERRIBLE. First, they staple numbers to every item (each sock, pair of underwear etc). Picking staples out of your clothes when you overslept and have to get into work RIGHT NOW sucks. And get this: I washed one pair of jeans, 5 pairs of socks and a sweatshirt. Grand total: 24 euro. The station isn't going to be happy about paying that final tab but the bottom line is I have to wash my clothes sometime and I have no time whatsoever to catch a taxi to a coin-operated laundromat.
sstricklen@kgw.com
Here is a photo of one of the driver's. Mariangela lives in the country and commutes into town. She wanted the job to practice her English. I taught her how to say "rock star parking" which is when you get to park RIGHT next to where you need to shoot. She has a wealth of knowledge about Torino. We are in downtown which is lit up like a Christmas tree with cool lights strung between buildings. They all have a theme. Bet you can guess this one:

It's funny.. she is super helpful and decided it would be better if we BOTH carried the tripod.

So, I have resolved the issue with the photographs that I mentioned on the news yesterday. No one told me I could only post two per blog (important fact). BUT.. I can still post as many as I want..... just have to spread them out.
Since I am definitely not a fan of how the cropped photos turned out: I'm reposting. This will look the same for those of you who check out my blog by clicking on the health link. The 'new and improved' photos will show up on the Olympics blog.
First: the bus on day one.

Second: the bus on day five. WOW.

Hello!!! Ciao!!
It's Saturday morning my time and I've just wrapped up my live shot for the Friday midnite newscast on the Opening Ceremony for everyone back home in Portland. I snagged about 3 hours of sleep last night and honestly I feel like my head is full of sand.
After I finish this blog entry I will work on a story I'm writing and then try to set stuff up for the following week ((where we have some holes in our schedule)).
It's great to see so many familiar faces.. all the same people I worked with in Salt Lake City and Athens are here.. and having that familiarity really helps.
I'm loving Italy and Torino (Turin) and am glad this city got to host the Olympics. I haven't been to Italy before, so I don't know how Torino compares to other Italian cities, but I'm pretty enamored with it.
I'm pooped and have a ton of work to do, so I'll get right to the pictures:
First up.. the bus. It takes me about an hour to and hour and 15 to get to the workspace from my media village. I love the contrast in these two photos. Frankly, riding the bus stinks for lack of a more delicate way of putting it. I feel like a sardine.
DAY ONE:

DAY 5:

Next up.. one of our drivers (Mariangela) and me posing in front of one of many displays of lights around downtown. She's GREAT and honestly, I really like all 4 of them (I'm not spelling this correctly but we also have Lorenzo, Simone, and Daniele). I need to do a story on them. They are smart, witty 20-somethings who wanted the job as an opportunity to practice their English. They help translate when needed. They show us awesome sights in the city and are just fun to hang out with.

Now, my good travelling Olympics buddy Allen Schauffler. He's an anchor with our sister station in Seattle (KING 5). He nicknamed me Stewie in Athens and it stuck. It's only an Olympics thing, too.

Speaking of nicknames.. we call the phojo (photojournalist) I'm working with Rod Stevens "Rockin' Rodney". Also an Olympics thing that's been around since SLC.
His mom is going to love this photo. She usually emails me to tell me that she loves seeing her son since he usually spends all his time behind the lens. We're high above the city in Torino's tallest building the Mole Antonelliana. It rocks. And the Museum of Cinema inside is really, really cool.

Since the Olympic blog is back.. so is my quick response time (QRT). Yeah, I know... dorky acronym. Shoot me your emails and I'll answer them here if it's appropriate.
To XRX: Nope. I wasn't in bed. I was running and gunning as we say in downtown Torino to get sound for a story I was working on. Not as many motorcycles here as in Athens. Bet the weather plays a role in that. ;-)
Trista: Thanks for the nice email. Now you can see my hair down since I need to wear the channel 8 hat (which is two sizes too big and keeps slipping down) during my liveshots to keep my ears warm.
Brandy: Yeah, I do meet a lot of people and while I am TERRIBLE with names I am great with faces. You also emailed me about my hair (from that earlier blog posting about people who write in to share their unsolicited opinions about what I should do with it). Well, here in Italy the wind keeps blowing my hair into my lipgloss. Yuk.
Josh: Thanks!! I am having a great time here in Italy!!!!! Your email made me laugh. I totally enjoy filling in on Mix 107.5. I finally met Carrie face to face the other day. It was so nice since I talk to her all the time via email or phone. Both her and Tim and the producer James are great!!!
Joe: ((who wrote me about my earlier posting and my wipeouts on the ski slopes)) writes: I'm with you regarding skiing.. I swear if I ever go again, I'm going to strap the skis to my rear-end.. since that's where I spend most of my time on the slopes! . Joe, I tell you what... it's always nice to know you're not alone. My neck hurt for a week!
Take care for now. Shoot me an email especially if you know of any Oregon/Washington Olympic connections. I love to hear from everyone back home.
sstricklen@kgw.com
And to my wonderful husband... I miss you terribly and love you dearly. If anyone cares to know.. we bought these little silver necklace charms when we took our ski trip right before I left for Italy. The night before I flew out I asked John to put the necklace on me and I'm not taking it off until I get home. Yeah, yeah.. also a little dorky, eh? But when I'm missing him I just reach up and grab the charms and it makes me smile.
After 24 hours of travel.. no sleep and some technical difficulties at the NBC workspace.. things are finally coming together. I have a ton to tell you about, but I'm swamped and need a moment to get myself pulled together. Also, I need to check with our web guru to find out about the NBC Olympic Blog which will turn up in a different place. I actually wish I could blog here (I can't) because I have control over when I post. Doing it the other way requires all these steps and sometimes it takes them too long to make the post and last time in Athens one blog showed up a week late.
Right now we're trying to resolve multiple connectivity issues at the workspace. Thank goodness mine worked the very first time (which is why I'm online right now and able to blog).
One pic... this is from last night. We went to this fabulous restaurant called La Pergola. We had a great time and enjoyed a well earned multi-course meal that ROCKED. On an aside, we couldn't find it at first and I was trying to get directions in Italian. The guy told me he didn't speak english but could speak a little Spanish. A phojo in our group from Boise speaks Spanish and stepped in. How funny... getting directions in Spanish in Italy.
Taking the photo: Rod Stevens, we call him "Rockin' Rodney". From left to right: Mimi Jung from our sister station in Seattle.. Rob Michaud from our DC office.. me (my nickname is Stewie).. Lisa Helderop who coordinates all of us.. and Xanti, the spanish speaking phojo from Boise.
