Really quick...

In case you're wondering where I am.. I'm on vacation. I took a few days off prior to my departure to Italy to spend some quality time with my husband. I have some really great emails to answer here once I carve out a little time. In the meantime, I so wish I had a hot tub right now to soak my sore muscles. We spent a night at Timberline and went skiing (which I don't know how to do). If you ever go and require a lesson like me, ask for Andy C. He was amazing and patient. And no, no one is paying me to say that. ;-) Actually, I'm sure all the instructors are great! But, I learned a lot from Andy and I would say I'm not necessarily the easiest to teach considering how much I dislike falling.

More soon.. Steph sstricklen@kgw.com

You can't make this stuff up, folks

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) -- Police say a robbery suspect held up a
diner on Monday, went back for seconds on Wednesday and wound up
shooting himself in the foot.

Police say they arrested Clayton Everett Teman, 23, who was
hospitalized. A bullet had gone through his foot.

Springfield police Detective Tom Rappe said the robber
encountered the same clerk in both stickups, and told her the
second time he wanted more.

"He was a little upset due to the amount of money he got the
first time, so he went back hoping to get more," said Springfield
police Detective Tom Rappe.

As he left the diner, police said, the robber ran through a
parking lot and fired several rounds from a handgun, hitting
himself once.

Police said they weren't sure why he fired the gun, but said
they suspected he was using methamphetamine.

Joe, Mark, Ryan.. this one is for you

For Joe: I don't know if Nike tried unsuccessfully in the past to get the rights it secured this time around to outfit American athletes on the podium. I do know Nike has been part of the Olympics for a while.. but this is definitely a higher-profile avenue (retail sales of Nike stuff with the Olympic rings on it that you and I can buy).

You also asked about reporters who use ethnic sounding last names that are fake and are not maiden names, etc... Yes, I have heard of this and know a few people first-hand who do it. None of them work at KGW but I do know it happens. As to why: well, you'd have to ask them why they did it and I wonder if they would deny having a fake last name if you asked.

PS. Your possibly politically-charged/controversial story idea is really interesting, but I don't know how we'd verify something like that, you know??

For Mark: Here are a few links I found that I hope are helpful..

http://familydoctor.org/590.xml

http://www.mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/publications/allpubs/SVP-0013/default.asp

http://kidshealth.org/teen/

This is short and "to the point":

http://www.extension.umn.edu/info-u/families/BE904.html

I really do hope they help you and anyone else!!

And Ryan: Yes, my hair.. everyone seems to have an opinion (which often conflict proving that even if I wanted to I couldn't make everyone happy). Some people are nice and love it, others rude. I probably have the world's thickest skin though so even the nastiest emails give me a laugh. It's quite long right now which is why I pin it back. Short was fun for a while, as was platinum blonde, and who knows.. I may decide on some happy medium at some point. But, I'm pretty fickle when it comes to hairstyles so I suppose the only constant thing with me is change. I just figure as long as you can see my eyes when I'm talking to you and it's not hot pink or super distracting, then it's really not important how it looks.

One of my favorite hair comments just came, actually, over Christmas. I got what I first thought was the nicest card from a viewer who I have never met. Ina writes (and I'm quoting because I HAD to keep it): Dear Stephanie, I have really enjoyed your progress with channel 8. Your reporting is great. You are a most attractive woman. But your present hair style is not for you. You look like an "old lady." Please, there is a right style for you that is more flattering. Lovingly, Ina.

Well, hey.. at least she feels comforatable telling me how she feels!!

Come on, tell me how much you love/hate/could care less about my hair/face/wardrobe choice: sstricklen@kgw.com :-)

The best of times, the worst of times

I'll spare you most (but not all) of the details.. but today was both completely awesome and completely lame. The day started out wonderfully, as I shot 3, possibly 4 stories that will air over in Italy during the Olympics. I can't tell you more yet, but I had a blast doing them.

Then I got back to the station and was so completely bogged down with work.. special reports for February that I MUST get done before I leave.. multi-shoot stories that require shifting people's schedules (including mine).. returning calls.. you get the idea. It may feel lousy to be so far behind but I like what I do which helps make it an easier pill to swallow.

On an aside, did any of you read the Bode Miller stories in Time and Newsweek?? Share your thoughts!! I'd love to hear them. sstricklen@kgw.com

People I owe a blog response to: Ryan, Joe, and Mark. I haven't forgotten.. I PROMISE!!

P.S. I just fronted the health segment tonite at 5. The Italian sex and TV story was NOT my doing!! :-)

The flu sucks.

Typically, when people say they have the flu.. they don't.

The flu will often knock you flat on your back, making you tremendously sick in a way that you are not likely to forget anytime soon.

I haven't had the flu for about 10 years now and I intend to keep it that way by getting my annual flu shot.

I'll never forget getting the flu, either. I had just gotten a job as a waitress to help pay for college. The day I was supposed to start work I came down with an illness I thought would probably kill me I felt so bad. I have never whined more in my life. The doctor just smiled, patted me on the shoulder and told me I had the flu and all I could do was wait it out. Took a week, too. Yes, the restaurant let me keep my job (amazingly enough, I mean who calls in sick for a week before they ever start working??)

Sure, sometimes the flu shot doesn't protect against what's currently circulating, but it is often the best line of defense besides washing your hands (which I also do religiously).

Here is the state hotline if you'd like to know about flu shot clinics near you:

1-800-SAFE-NET

Another good resource: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (AKA the CDC): http://www.cdc.gov

Here's a direct link to the flu page: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm

On an unrelated note: Jennifer sent me this picture of her new puppy Koda. He's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and I bet he rules the roost!!

And Linda wrote about the SAD story from the other days and says while she doesn't mind the rain what she really wants is SNOW!!

Update 5:50pm

Yay to Jennifer for emailing me the first picture of a non-dog!!
Here is her little fuzzball Tobey who she says is an absolute sweetheart!

tobey.jpg

Tobey reminds me of Matt Zaffino and Lisa's cat: Velcro. Velcro has taken to regularly bringing Lisa pine cones as a gift (that's what you see in the picture below). Trust me, it's better than mice. Again: this is with my camera phone so the quality is not that great.

Rain, rain.. go away

Okay.. go ahead. Lay it on me. What do you think about the rain? I have mixed emotions. I hate missing my morning and weekend runs because it's just so wet outside. I hate that my pants fit a little tighter because of it. My dog hates it because he doesn't like getting his feet wet and misses his walks. But, I love the way it looks, sounds and smells. In terms of our coverage.. well, the rain dominates. I get it. The pictures are interesting and the flooding/landslides/falling trees do pose a potential danger to people. But, I could use a little break. How about you?? Email me: Click here to sound off about the WEATHER. With your permission I may post a few-- but I'll leave out your last name and email address for privacy.

The rain is the reason I got assigned this story tonite even though it ended up having nothing to do with it. I showed up to work about 15 minutes late and by the time I got into the morning meeting the managers had already assigned me to a rain and depression story.

I found out that OHSU employs the researcher who actually coined the term for this winter depression. Dr. Al Lewy came up with the term Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD a while back to describe this season-specific depression. But it's not related to the rain. It's related to the length of the days. Winter days here are much shorter than summer days and about 20% of us have our body clocks get screwed up because of it (15% mild cases and 5% more serious). And since winter is the rainy season it may feel like that's the culprit.

Some of the symptoms of SAD include: excessive eating coupled with a craving for starchy foods (Doesn't that sound weird? One source I found suggests it's related to the lack of energy SAD sufferers feel.. the starchy foods provide some relief. I tried to call Dr. Lewy but he's not in his office. He'd know.). Other symptoms include weight gain, excessive sleeping, a lack of energy during the day even after excessive sleeping, irritability, and a reversal of symptoms once the days get longer.

I've got more to post, but it's 4:37 and I have to go get ready for my live shot. I'm live on the roof for the 5pm hit, by the way. We call it "downtown Portland" which is totally accurate... but it's still the roof.

I'll add more to this posting once I'm done with my 5pm hit. I have some good background info for you and (on a totally unrelated note) another dog picture to post.

UPDATE: 5:36pm.

Well, I was not on the roof afterall. I mean, I TRIED to go live from the roof. I climbed three stories of stairs only to realize you now need a keycard to get up there. Back down three flights of stairs to retrieve said card. Back up three flights and I put the card to the reader and.... nothing. My keycard doesn't work. The photographer I was working with, Rod, ran into me on the stairs and let me through the door. We got into position only to realize my IFB doesn't work. The IFB is the little earpiece that allows me to hear what's going out over the air and what the producers need to tell me. Without it, you're sunk. We didn't even have a monitor so I could just guess when it was time to talk (which I've done).

So, the desk calls Rod and tells him to tell me to hightail it to the newsroom to the camera there (we call it cam4). I flew down the stairs, removing jackets etc. as I went, and plunked myself down in the seat with 2 minutes to spare.

Nuts.

Okay, Linda wrote me about the whole "starchy foods" things. Must be why she craves tuna casserole, she says. Made me laugh out loud.

Steve wrote me saying he gets depressed by the sun. He knows he's in the minority but has an interesting point. Here is an excerpt from his email:

I know I may be in the minority, but the sun depresses me. I live for this time of year. I love cloudy days and especially foggy and rainy days. I lived in Tucson for 2 ½ years, and had some of the worst depression of my life. (I’m 48) I love the nighttime and before I retired, all I wanted to work was graveyard. And this time of year was heaven. Go to work in the dark, come home in the dark, and sleep the daylight away.

My point? Not everyone sees the rain and short days as a negative, so please don’t lead off with the assumption that rain, etc. is a bad thing. These are the things that make Oregon Oregon.

Yup. The rain is definitely a part of living here. And I love it!! I could just do with a break every now and then. But that's just me.

Heather just wrote me with this:

Your story this evening caught my attention and I thought I'd at least add my 2 cents.

Interesting about the length of days that causes SAD. Have to admit that today, when the afternoon sun shone wonderfully in my home between 2-4 pm, I had a sudden burst of energy that I'd thought I'd lost over the last 3-4 weeks. Being wrapped up in the holiday shuffle, I hadn't had the time to think about much else. Now that life is back to "normal", (ie: kids in school, house straightened up somewhat and hubby's work schedule back on track) I've found that the days upon days of gloom have really gotten to me. I haven't had that "spark" and it shows in my attitude. All that to say...the sunshine today, brief as it was, was a real shot in the arm for me.

Thought you'd get a kick out of this one...my kids, 10, 7, and 3, look out the window in the morning as we ready ourselves for the day and say, "Mommy, its another Eeyore day"! (Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh) They've sure been right lately.

Kids say the darndest things, don't they??

Okay, time for the gratuitous dog photos..

This little guy (make that BIG guy) is named Moose and keeps our producer Rich very busy. He's obviously having the time of his life in the snow!!

And Roger sent me this photo of his dog Daphne.

Still waiting for that random pet.. like an iguana or something. :-) Click here to email me..

Boxer Babies

After giving me her guesses (from the previous post) I asked Kirsten if she'd be interested in sending me a picture of her two Boxers, which she did. Thanks, Kirsten!! Tell me they aren't the cutest pair?!! The big one is Baxter and the little puppy is Roxy. She also told me about this Boxer Play Day.. here's an excerpt:

It's the second Sunday of every month at noon at North Clackamas Park in Milwaukie. It's pretty incredible to see a dozen or two dozen Boxer all playing together!

You know, I like cats/birds/horses/fish/you get the idea.. as much as dogs.. so, send me your pictures if you feel like it! Click here to email me!

Hey, Jennifer!

How odd is it that I'm happy I got an email from Jennifer asking me to post those dog pictures I promised?

I guess what makes me happy is that you're reading this and care enough to comment. I've gotten story ideas (Michael, etc.), feedback (Hi, Roger.. yeah, "efforting" is industry lingo), hairstyle suggestions (Ryan.. I haven't forgotten about you). I've found a few new blogs I look over when I have a second (Anita and Joe). One thing everyone loves and asks to hear more about is the "behind the scenes" stuff; how we get the news on the air along with the little things that happen throughout the day that aren't central to the final story, but might make you laugh.

To get back to Jennifer.. here are those pictures. I thought I'd post them first and see if you can guess which KGW reporter/anchor shares a home with which of these furry friends. One of these dogs is my Milo.. one is Matt Zaffino's puppy Xena and another is Joe Donlon's puppy Lola. I threw in a gratuituous shot of my friend Siobhan's dog Tater (just because). Email me if you have a guess and I'll fill you in.. sstricklen@kgw.com

Were you up at 5am?

I was.

I anchored the morning show this morning, so I actually got up at 2:45am. But, if you saw the top of the 5am newscast you may have heard that loud thud right off the top of the show. It was Brenda's wireless microphone taking a tumble to the ground. Those things weigh about a pound and are clipped on to us with these rinky-dinky clips that feel about as secure as a paperclip.

Here's a pic.

Photo 139.jpg

It made me laugh out loud on the air.. then I forgot the temp outside (which we're supposed to give off the top of the show) and had to ask Brenda. Man oh man, am I happy it's Friday and I'm not on call this weekend!!

Email me! sstricklen@kgw.com and Mark: I got your email. I'm sorry to hear about what's going on. Let me see if I can find some information to post to this blog.

Knock, knock.. who's there?

So there I am sitting in the live truck putting together my second live hit for the noon show and the door to the truck opens......... and standing there is one surprised looking Mike Donahue (from one of the "other" stations).

"Uh, wrong truck.." he laughs as he closes the door and walks away to the very similar looking live truck parked (basically) right next to us.

These things happen, and it's always nice to see someone else doing it besides me. ;-)

I think I'll be back to my normal routine next Wednesday which is when the regular blogging effort will return. It's just not a priority when I get up at 2:45am.. anchor.. then report and leave work at 3 in the afternoon. In fact, I'm writing this from home because I felt like I had to leave work before I got stuck in the afternoon rush hour and I thought you might get a chuckle out of the "matching live truck" story.

As for my OHSU MRI story today ... it wasn't my original story. I was efforting a piece on a study in the journal Pediatrics about SUV safety and children. I figured it would affect a lot of people and so it would have broad appeal. My bosses assigned the MRI story to me about 9:30 this morning after pulling Wilson Chow off of it so he could work on tomorrow morning's story (5am to 7am, baby!!). The MRI story is a good one too and certainly very visual.

Here are links to both the SUV and MRI stories:

First.. one newspaper's take on the SUV study (sorry for the long link.. I haven't taken the time to dust off the old html notebook from college to refresh my memory on how to hide it):
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-suv-safety-study,1,2653043.story?coll=sns-ap-nation-headlines

And another newspaper's take on the OHSU MRI story (I've met this reporter.. nice guy):
http://http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/113619390443750.xml&coll=7

On a completely unrelated note I have THE cutest pictures of Joe Donlon's new puppy Lola and Matt Zaffino's puppy Xena. Maybe I'll toss those up tomorrow.... soo cute. Matt was lucky enough to marry one of my best friends Lisa. I remember when she asked me to babysit Xena while they headed out of town. Xena and I had a girls weekend. Girls weekend plus one. My dog Milo was in the mix, but he's neutered so, really.... anyway, they got along great and she was a dream. She is very lovey and uses that to get herself out of a jam when she's doing something she's not supposed to (like sneaking halfway up on the bed all the while pretending she just wants a head pet). Clever girl. Yup, sharing those photos sounds like a good idea for tomorrow.

Have a great night and stay dry!! Email me: sstricklen@kgw.com
