WEEK 4: skin of my teeth

Considering baby Elle turns 5 weeks tomorrow, I'm getting this post done by the skin of my teeth.

I'm sitting here exhausted, oily hair pulled up in a ponytail, wearing one of 4 shirts I have in heavy rotation because I don't want to leak all over everything else, looking at a messy house that is slowly becoming overrun by all things baby Elle.. and you know what, folks? I'm happy. Completely satisfied. Life is good. Why?

My baby smiles when she sees me.

She just started this. When I come around a corner and her little eyes lock on me, her mouth breaks into the widest smile you've ever seen. Her eyes crinkle up. She takes a few loud breaths. And I fall in love all over again.

That smile makes up for the fuss and holler. The late nights. The groundhog's day that is my life right now. The millions of diapers.

And why don't I post a picture of this? Because at the exact instant she lights up mama's life with that smile my milk lets down and a camera is the last thing on my mind. Go figure.

:)

Hey Steph,
That is the part of being a new Mother. That sure is an adorable pic of baby Elle. Enjoy every waking moment of her while she is a baby because, before you know it, she will be all grown up. Sounds like she is letting you sleep more. All 5 of my babies slept all night when they were 6 wks old or younger. My Mother always told me that a full baby will sleep all night so, try that, you might be surprised... I used to feed mine around 10:30 P.M. and they slept all night. Have fun!!!!

Welcome to motherhood! There is nothing like your child's smile (even when they are adopted). So glad that you are happy and not stressing about the lack of a shower or a messy house. If it bothers your friends or family, ask them to pitch in and clean it for you (hehehe)!
In response to your post last week, cats are just as attentive. My cat 'stood guard" under my daughter's crib and would come running to me the second she cried. She would meow at the top of her lungs until I followed her down the hall to my daughter's room. Snuggles was a good "mama" even though she never had a litter of her own.
Enjoy this time, it really does fly by!!

Way to go - the wee bairn looks just like you! The others are right, enjoy her while she's little; they grow up way to fast. My "baby" is getting married in 2 weeks.Seems like just yesterday she could fit lengthwise between my knees and stomach (she's 31). Like we said, time flies!

Congrats... Being a mom is such a wonderful thing. I had a baby girl, too, nineteen years ago. It is all wonderful at every age. Take lots of pictures and remember as your little one goes through some challenging phases, they will mysteriously disappear just as they mysteriously appeared. You may wonder how you will get through the terrible twos but just when you think you can't take it anymore, the tantrums will pass. Enjoy all of it!

Enjoy all the beautiful moments you will have. My youngest just turned 21 years this past weekend. Each step in life is a moment to remember, from the first step to when you put them in school, to drivers license, high school graduation and off to college. It goes by sooooo fast. Oh also, you will earn each gray hair and be proud of them. They come with mother hood.

As everyone else has said enjoy baby Elle, as time goes so fast. Before you know it they are off to school. Adding to what Anita said about her cat and baby. When I was pregnant with my son we had a male cat that would lay in my lap with his front paws on my belly,(yes he did get kicked), and from the day we brought the baby home to the day we lost the cat he thought of the baby as his. He would lay under the crib or near wherever the baby was. If baby cried cat came running pitching a fit.

No matter how many kids you have, those first baby smiles will melt a mother's heart into a puddle of mush...enjoy! Kim
