Best Pizza in Portland Blog

Who has the best pizza in the Portland area?
That's the question we posed this morning during my segments on Newschannel 8 at Sunrise.
My vote goes to "Escape from New York Pizza" on NW 23rd between Hoyt & Irving Streets, and I showed my allegiance to them on the air by broadcasting live from their shop.
Thanks, Chris, for opening the doors at 4:30am, and letting us do our thing.

The question remains... what do you think?
I received a lot of e-mails from viewers who weighed in on the discussion.
Below are some (many) of the responses. If you'd like to share your thoughts on the best pizza place in the Portland area, please post your comments on this blog.
Thanks!!

The best pizza to be had is in Stayton Or. It's Apizza on 3rd st. The owner was trained in New Haven and worked at Pepe's apizza. It's just like typical east coast pizza, thin crust with the slight char on the bottom. They are struggling because nobody knows about them. Maybe you can help.

It's called Bortolami's Pizzeria. It's in Hazel Dell, Vancouver on 99th st. and NE 9th Ave. It's real easy to get to just take I-5 exit 5. Ya can't miss it. They have a racing and antique bike theme. It's pretty cool.

Good morning Drew !
Couldn't resist to comment about the absolutely best Pizza in Vancouver, WA. The 'Blind Onion' is hands-down the best pizza you'll ever eat. . On any given night you'll have a challenge parking because it's always crowded to the max, not for the funky atmosphere, but for the outstanding pizza. The crust is perfect-'crunchewy', and whether you get the'Vegetarian' with artichoke hearts, red onions, mushrooms, olives, etc., or the standard pepperoni, you won't be disappointed. Our favorite: 'Sausage & peppers' has red & yellow sliced peppers, red onions, & Italian sausage-delicious !

AMALFI'S on N.E. Fremont makes about the best pizza in Portland. Owned and operated by the same family in the same location for almost 50 years, they also offer a full menu of Italian cuisine. I've been dining there since the summer of 1963 and have NEVER been disappointed.

OK...Considering that most Portlanders have never been exposed to what real Pizza should be, your choice of Escape from NY was impressive. Most Pizza in Portland is not what Pizza originally was. Peasant food is what it originated from in Naples with some leftover dough and tomatoes from a produce market and it was born. Thanks for your wise choice and exposing Portland to real stuff and not the Ham/Pinapple abomination that the west has tried to pass off.

Drew,

I couldn't agree with you more ... Escape From New York (EFNY) makes the best pizza in town.

I'm from the East Coast, and I fell in love with EFNY pizza when I moved to San Francisco in 1985. When I found an EFNY pizza "joint" on NW 23rd during a 1992 job interview, I took it as a sign that everything would work out, if I moved to Portland.

I should add that my sister lives in Seattle, and I don't dare show up on her doorstep without a cheese pizza from Escape From New York.

P.S. I enjoy your early morning segments ... you're surprisingly manic ... er ... energetic for that hour of the day!

By far the best which won a national honor is the Flying Pie on 77th & Stark and their new Gresham location on E. Burnside in Gresham.

Drew,
I think Totinos pizza would be a close second. It's so yummy for the tummy. It's kind of hard to find those puppies right now though.

Juliano's in Vancouver is great! Lots of toppings, family friendly atmosphere, great service, a ton of great beers on tap and the best sausage I have ever had!

The absolute BEST pizza is Nonna Emilia's in Aloha, OR.
They also have excellent italian food of all kinds, but for take out especially, their pizza can't be beat.

For the coast, Gallucci's in Lincoln City is still pretty darned good. Not as good as whe it was owned by them 20 years ago, and when my bro. worked there, but it is still TOPS at the coast. A must stop destination!

Hello,
I would like to tell you about the best pizza place in Oregon and quite possible the United States (I'll explain that statement later). Little Italy in Cornelius is definately my favorite pizza joint hands down. I wind up taking my friends and family there as often as possible. Even going as far as to have my recent 41st birthday celebration there. When family is in from out of town I often drag them out to Cornelius for some local dinning. I made a point of this when my Aunt and Uncle were visiting. This was several years ago and to this day they comment about how great Little Italy pizza was. Even going as far as to place it better than pizza eaten in Chicago. There was a place in Norman, OK that had authentic brick oven baked pizza that I thought was very good but was topped by the great tasting Little Italy pizza according to mu Aunt.
I highly reccomend Little Italy out in Cornelius, OR.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Drew,
You need to come to the "Couv" and try Vancouver Pizza (2219 Main Street)! It's hard to know what your favorite might be...from the traditional to the specialty pizza. You have to start with their famous cheese breadsticks! You've tasted nothing like them. Hope you and your audience gets a chance to try them!

Drew, I discovered Escape from NY Pizza when they still had a shop across from the Galleria some years ago. It wasn't much after I found it that they were forced to close because the building was to be demolished. Fortunately, they already had the shop up in NW Portland. As far as I am concerned, you are right on about their fabulous pizza!

I believe that BLIND ONION pizza on Mill plain and Grand BLVD, in Vancouver, is the best pizza I have eaten. They have a wide variety of pizzas cooked in a brick oven and many micro brews on tap. For lunch you can get lunch deals, pizza and a beer, etc.

Give it a try!
