Whiplash

The Portland City Commissioners are giving us a case of whiplash. Just when Erik Sten announced he was siding with the Mayor in favor of renaming Interstate Avenue after Cesar Chavez, there's a new plan. Randy Neeves says now everyone except Mayor Potter wants to rename 4th Avenue near City Hall after Chavez. It could happen today. But you can bet it won't happen quietly. We will bring you the fireworks at five.

Also, did you hear that a hiker has found what is likely the trail guide used by the missing University of Oregon professor? The rescue crew is calling this a recovery effort but do we dare hope for a miracle?

One of our excellent photographers Brian Robertson came by my desk today. Like many of us he is an animal lover and has two large sassy cats of his own. He wanted me to pass on that the Oregon Humane Society is overflowing with felines. They are not accepting anymore. Already there are two and three to a cage. They are even offering a special deal if you are able to adopt more than one. Brian said to keep a lookout tonight in his video for a delicate little boy named Butterball, weighing in at 28 pounds! If you're not into turkey you can still have a Butterball for Thanksgiving!

As always thanks for watching,

Tracy Barry

I Bet Tom Throws a tantrum and walks out. Then I think in a little bit He resigns and Portland will have a interim Mayor Named Sam. Who will sweep the TV reporters off their feet and coast to "re" election.
And We get Interstate Renamed...

I'm thoroughly disgusted with our mayor and the council members. They have thought of no one but trying to make brownie points with the latino community. They don't consider the ramifications of naming a street that goes thru the heart of CHINATOWN with a Spanish surname.

Saying that it would bring an international flair to it, is quite insulting.

Ceasar Chavez, though an interesting person, does not deserve this kind of attention. Name a park after him... NOT A STREET.

The disruption to the *WHOLE* community that lives on 4th or Interstate (or whatever street they decide on), is massive. Yet, the mayor and his thugs have not gotten the message.

Name changes should involve the *WHOLE* city, not just a select group of ELECTED people that are *SUPPOSE* to represent us, but only have their petty interests at heart.

I am totally disgusted with our city's leadership. They *ALL* need to be impeached or replaced.

Will some one vote for renaming Portland's City Hall to China Hall? If not, why will someone rename Chinatown's major street, NW 4th Avenue,Cesar Chavez Avenue?

I have 30 years history working as a social worker in the Chinese community, 95% of my clients are Chinese, currently I sit on the board of CCBA, but I am also very active in Oregon's diversity training field, I am all for honoring our state's Latino labor leader, my concern is the cultural censitivity issue of naming NW 4th Avenue.

City of Portland just finished spending millions of dollars to give Chinatown a new identity, and now all of a sudden the same city decided to rename the street that runs through Chinatown Cesar Chavez Avenue.

May I propose a compomise decision: renaming SW 4th Avenue to that of Cesar Chavez, and NW 4th Dr. Suen Yat Sun (founder of the new China) Avenue!
