Let me start by saying I know that Michael Jackson was a musical genius who leaves a lasting legacy. I get that part, I really do. An incredible talent.
That said, apart from Presidents and Princesses I can't really remember this kind of coverage of a memorial service and passing. Keep in mind though that I don't have the best memory.
This is just a bit of a release we got today giving us a heads up about NBC's coverage.
NBC News will provide live coverage to all time zones of Michael Jackson's public memorial service at approximately 1:00pm ET/10:00am PT. Brian Williams will anchor from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the site of the service, and will be joined by Lester Holt.
TODAY: Meredith Vieira will broadcast live from the Staples Center tomorrow and will also attend the memorial service later that morning.
NIGHTLY NEWS: Brian Williams will anchor Nightly News from Los Angeles tomorrow night.
PRIMETIME COVERAGE: Tonight, Hoda Kotb anchors "Dateline" which will feature the latest updates on Michael Jackson's memorial service and funeral arrangements, plus the making of the "Thriller" music video.
On Tuesday, Lester Holt will anchor a special edition of " Dateline" which will include highlights from the memorial service and reactions from fans of Michael Jackson around the country.
That's just a few of the highlights. There's more to come. Given the number of people who went on line to try and get tickets to the memorial I suspect that I am the one out of touch here and that the number of people watching will likely be huge.
As I sit here writing this quick entry I realize my true frustration is NOT that Michael Jackson's death gets so much coverage, but that so many other critical issues and amazing people DON'T get any.
As always, thanks for watching.

No, it's not just you. He was a great talent, but his ending was very sad. I'm very sorry he died so young and left little children, but this is massively overblown. There are so many really serious things going on in the world today, this is all just way too much. Shame on the media for exploiting this.
No, it's not just you.
We left the tv off all day yesterday, because we knew it was going to be Jackson all day long.
You're right, there are so many other news items going on that aren't being covered. Please go back to them. Please?
