By Laural Porter

Here it is the first of September. Where has the summer gone? I can't believe it's time for our kids to head back to school.
I already took my oldest daughter to Gonzaga University last weekend. She's my first to head away to college and it was even more emotional
than I expected. I miss her so much, it hurts.

She always participated with my other three children and my husband and me in the Portland Race For The Cure. This would have been our sixth year racing as a family.
We are still racing... and Meg, well, she's "Sleeping in for the Cure". Yes, you really can do that this year. You get a shirt and everything.

I am even more grateful to have the "Komen Portland Race For the Cure" in my life this year.
It gives me something extra to keep me busy and to look forward to, so I don't focus quite so much on not having my Meg home with me anymore.

I hope you all will join me in this year's Race on Sunday, September 17th. I'll be there with my family (Meg will be "sleeping in for the cure") and my KGW team, "Laural's Hardy Racers". We've almost raised 2,000 dollars so far for the Komen Foundation.
Please join us, and please add your comments below on why you Race for The Cure.

See you on Sunday, September 17th!!!

Fondly,
Laural Porter

Thank you for supporting such a great event. I really enjoy participating in the Race every year and it's wonderful that you and your station lend so much effort to a great event. This is truly the most exciting and important charity event in the NW and I am proud that you do such a super job helping to make it bigger each year.

Keep up the great work, I'm sure I will see you along with 45,000 other people on race-day next weekend!

Dear Laural,

My wife (Billie Jean) had breast cancer last year at this time and was going thru treatments at the time of the race in Portland.
I want to share a little about her journey because she just hated wearing THOSE hats while she was bald.
Our neighbor who is a graphic artist and works for the Statesman journal newspaper said if you don't like your head why don't you let me paint a scene on it. And so she did.
It was such at a hit at the treatment center to see my wife's head painted that it brought smiles to all whom were there for treatment of cancer. There was also a full page of pic's of my wife in the Statesman journal. It's been one year later and all is well. We'll be at the race on Sunday.
God Bless, Billie Jean's husband, Ron Sterba, Salem Oregon
