A Story in Faces

orphans - 1.jpg

Kandahar, Afghanistan - There are no rules that children can understand that explain a fate that is driven by poverty. The eyes of a child speaks a language of clarity, the words of which we do not often wish to hear. It is a story told by the faces of those whose future holds an uncertain hope.

The orphanage sits several kilometers south of the city of Kandahar. These are children who are all dependent on a this place for their survival. Muslim law has no provision for adoption so most of these children’s future rests with donations and fate. On that day, it was a group of US Army National Guard soldiers delivering donations collected back in the States.

There are many reasons that soldiers talk about that keep them focussed on their mission. The hope to bring stability and a measure of peace; the memories of September 11, 2001; the belief in contributing to something lasting. There is one focus, however, that soldiers have shared that rises above all of the rest... the children of Afghanistan. They can touch your soul.

Scott, had several opportunities to talk to you when you were in our area. The children around here really reflect the strain of this many years of war on the people of Afghanistan. Makes me proud to be here helping them.
