Kabul Military Training Academy (KMTC) is the primary training facility for the Afghan National Army (ANA). It is home to the Basic Training course, the Advanced Infantry Training course, the Non-commissioned Officer Training course, and the Officer Candidate School. The facilities of KMTC have a sordid history, dating back to the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Following the Soviet withdrawal and the rise of the Taliban, the facilities at KMTC were also one of the primary training sites for al-Qaida and the Taliban. The buildings at KMTC have slowly been refurbished and now house both ANA trainers and ANA conscripts, as well as United States and ISAF advisors and mentors who over see the ANA training. On this particular day class 50, known as Kandek 50, was graduated. This class included new privates and NCO's, as well as a class of Drill instructors whose yellow, red and green patch and black hats have become the symbol of the Afghan National Army's future. With temperatures pushing 100 degrees, the sol-diers lined up on the paved parade grounds and completed their final step in training.
