Sideline Observations from the Spurs Game

The Spurs will be much better. Now granted they played a Hornet team in dissarray, but the offseason has been very kind to the silver and black. I know it sounds crazy, but loosing early may have been the best thing that could have happened. They realized they needed some upgrades and got some much needed rest for their weary multiple-playoff legs. Do you think anything would have changed if they had gone to the conference finals and lost? Would there been another push for "one more run" with the same ol' team. Now I still think they should have kept Bruce, but this new encarnation looks pretty darn good. After one game! We will see if they still look as such in late June!

No wonder Bandera is known for it's tourism!

Now being at KENS for 10 years I have done countless "Games", for countless "Weeks". Until Friday, I had never shot a game in Bandera. The whole community welcomed Joe and myself with open arms. Now, most people we visit on Fridays are great. But Bandera took an extra step! The whole atmosphere had that feel of Fridays long past for an old jock like myself. Plus, the people made us feel like we were from there community instead of just visiting. If you get a chance, make the 47 mile drive from San Antonio and check them out. They also have this Cole Hubble kid at QB (He led the Bulldogs to a 1 point come from behind victory), he and his mates are worth the drive and price of admission. Thanks for everything Bandera!

Wow!

"They are who we thought they were!" Thanks Dennis Green! This weekend's games, college, pro, and high school lived up to their billing. It was a very good week for football. Who would have thought the Michigan-Notre Dame and Ohio State-USC games would have lived up to the hype. ( I didn't.)

How about Coach Streety getting his 300th win at Madison?

Then the Cowboys played well, Buffalo and New England was close. If you are a football fan you truly got your money's worth this weekend.

Now, what do they do for an encore?

With the opening of their new stadium, Heroes Stadium no doubt, they named the encircling street after a truly great athlete. Not for his contribution on the field, even though he was pretty good. But for everything that happened after. David Edwards was hurt during Madison's playoff game with Austin Westlake. I was there and it was one of the most chilling scenes of my life. It really took out of everyone at the field that day. It was touch and go for the months that followed, but when he finally did return to the field...Wow! He didn't play another down, but he galvanized a school and a community. Everytime I saw him he had a smile. I don't know if I would have. Would you? Anyway, Congratulations to the Edwards family. David was taken too soon but in that time he touched so many. Everytime I drive into that stadium I will remember, we all should!!!

It's almost time. Does it feel like the week before Christmas to you? Well it is for me! Football season starts next Thursday. Zero Week, if that makes sense. High schools hit it, then UIW and all the colleges start up. Then it's time for the NFL. It's about to be on baby! The turf is down, the signs are going up. In just a few short days, the Jerry Jones Road Show pulls into San Antonio. With T.O. gone, Tony Romo has become the main attraction. But is that really a good thing for Romo? Who amongst the receivers will step up to fill the hole? Is this Sam Hurd's breakout year? What about Felix Jones? Can Jason Garrett regain his mojo? Those are just a few of the questions on the mind of fans. Many more than last year at this time. Will three weeks be enough to get them answered? I doubt it!

Now everyone has their opinion basketball-wise. But have you thought about the person you lose in Bruce. For the media, who is going to be there doing interviews all the time. A couple of years ago, Bruce went to "It is, what it is!" and we in the media had fun with it. That's because Bruce was the goto interview. He always talked, after a game after a practice or after one of his many "Bruce and Buddy" events.

As a player he had to find his niche' and work his way up through the ranks. A hard nosed bule collar player on a blue collar team, in a blue collar town. He is on commercials and he owns a business in town with his wife. That though is the unfortunate part on the NBA business. Players are commodities but in their community they are so much more. At least this one has been for the people of San Antonio. I shot quite a few stories with Bruce and more interviews than I can remember. But he is one of the guys who was usually smiling and remembered your name. Stayed as long as you needed him and even occasionally sat down and had dinner with you.

Anyway, if this is it for Bruce in SA Good Luck to him. We hope you and your family keep your roots planted right here for years to come.
That is a headline from a story today. How many days and months and years do we have to go through this? I don't have any problem with Favre wanting to play. If someone wants to pay him he could play until he's 80! I just hate the fact that we have to follow the soap opera everyday! Everyday! Brett, decide whether you want to play or not, then go play. He has more waffle in him than Eggo! We in the media, let them figure it out and stop reporting every little development. "Favre walks past a Viking hat at the Wal-Mart in Hattesburg!" Vikings, let him decide and stop leaking facts to the media. You are really putting a lot of pressure on the QB's that are there. I just hope we get all this resolved soon, if not every week during the season a team will have contacted Favre about coming back.
hy⋅per⋅bo⋅le
-noun- 1. obvious and intentional exaggeration.
2. an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as "to wait an eternity."

I have heard over the years, the greatest this the greatest that and it really drives me crazy! I mean that game or play or whatever my have been awesome. It may be the best you have ever seen with your own two eyes. But that does not make it the "Greatest"!

Muhammad Ali, to me "the Greatest" boxer of all time. He said he was, I believe he was but does that mean literally he was the best ever? The recent Celtic-Bull playoff series, I heard many people say it was the best. Better than Bird vs. Jordan? I saw them both, I think the recent one was very good but not better.

It's all about perspective, you have yours and I have mine. The only thing I suggest when we say " the greatest" qualify it just a bit.

If you have been watching the Spurs-Mavs series you've seen both. Now how do you distinguish between the two? Here's a hint: If Jason Terry is giving it, it's probably DIRTY! OMG! The shot he hit Tony with on the fast break...it got him a flagrant foul, at the park it may have gotten him knocked out! There is such a thing as basketball ettiquete. You play tough and you play hard, but you do not try to injure! That shoulder forearm shiver might have injured TP. Then later in the game as Bruce went up for a shot he deliberately undercut him! Wow! Props to Bruce for just popping up and shooting his freethrows. Ron Artest would not have been as kind. Robert Horry would not have been as kind. Why restort to such tactics? I have always kinda liked JET, but after this I don't know. I am sure this breaks his heart, but c'mon man! Go Hard, or Go Home! But if you gotta go dirty, just stay home!

Did you see what the UConn Lady Huskies did in the NCAA tournament? Did you see that they went undefeated for the entire year? Every victory was by double digits. Even in the Championship game! These young women simply demolished the competition. If you could call it that. Just because there isn't much dunking and high flying doesn't diminish their dominance. Check the stats, check the records how could you not be impressed!
