About David...
He was promoted to deputy sports editor in 1986, working closely with writers and overseeing much of the daily content in the section. In 1995, Flores was named assistant sports editor for high schools, and also started writing two columns a week. Flores was named Texas High School Sportswriter of the Year by the Texas High School Coaches Association in 2002. He became a full-time columnist in 2004, focusing mostly on the high school beat and local sports. Flores also writes a sports column for Conexion, a weekly newspaper published by the Express-News. He won a first-place award from the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors in 2006 for his columns in Conexion. Flores, 54, was born and raised in Corpus Christi, where he graduated from Miller High School in 1973. He played football at Texas Lutheran College as a freshman and transferred to Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville) in 1974, trading his football helmet for a typewriter. He worked for the A&I Sports Information Office, the student newspaper and the Kingsville Record-News while attending A&I from 1974-77. The A&I alumnus joined the Record-News as sports editor in 1977, and was hired at the Express-News in August 1979. While Flores has written about many athletes and coaches at every level in many sports throughout his career, he always has said that no assignment has ever been as fulfilling as reporting on high school sports. Why? Because high school athletics are uniquely local. Flores has a daughter, Lilia; and a son, Jesse; and four grandchildren, Deliah, Chance, Chelsea and Jesse. |
