We have to say that Arizona Wildcat football did okay when it came to the sixth annual Herbie awards...That's from ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit...The list is on line right now at espn.com...Willie Tuitama listed as one of the top five new school quarterbacks (run and pass)...Anton Cason in top five cornerback list...Micheal Johnson at the top of the top five safety list...Arizona listed as one of seven teams that are moving on...

The huge theme at the Stoops Monday press conference was, of course, the Arizona defense against the BYU offense...Some good x's and o's talk...You can find the presser in it's entirety on the "media" page of the sports home page at www.fox11az.com...Vinnie

Victor Yates... Voice of Inspiration

Towards the end of Arizona's second practice Thursday evening, during their 11-on-11 team period, one voice could be heard louder than all the calls being made and all the directions from the coaches. It was walk-on defensive back Victor Yates (in case you forgot he was the starting QB for the 2005 4A Division II State Champions - Palo Verde High School). Throughout camp at Rincon Vista Yates has kept his enthusiasm high letting everyone kno...

Who To Believe???

The media sentiment around the Arizona Wildcat controlled football scrimmage on Saturday night at Arizona Stadium was that Willie Tuitama did not look so good at times...Mike Stoops was more than supportive of Willie's on the field efforts...He did point out that Willie at times is trying to do more than he should meaning his confidence level is that high...In defense of Willie that can be easily turned around and thrown in his face...He's so ...

No Stand Around In Mike

Mike Stoops continues to be very active in drills with the Wildcat defense...Very hands on and constantly teaching during individual and team drills...I find that a bit interesting as I've seen a number of collegiate head coaches simply stand around and let the assistants do their thing...Of course Mike's first love might just always be defense...More spirited scrimmage action between the number one's and two's on Wednesday night...Chris Henry...

Cats Looking Sharp!!!

When I visited the first UA practice last Thursday, I must admit I wasn't fired up about what I saw. I know things looked crisp as the squad went through drills efficiently, but there seemed to be a lack of excitement. I talked to Chris Henry the next day and he said "watch when the pads come on." I was out there this evening; the team had on full pads and I was impressed. There were guys flying to the ball, plays being made by veterans an...

Holmes Has Potential

So looking at Louis Holmes makes one a little bit star struck...He is a physical specimen on the field...He has an awesome body frame for a defensive end...Looks like he'll be able to get around the end very quick after the snap...We were comparing him to Javon Kearse over the weekend...Seems to have all the intangibles including that sixth sense of what's going to happen on any given snap...All was well with his first two practices on Friday ...

Performance Enhancement is Key!!

With Arizona Football training camp underway there are some questions that need to be answered in the next month leading up to the first game (BYU 9/2). One question that has a simple answer is the strength and conditioning of the 2006 Wildcats. If you get out to practice you will notice the team looks bigger, explosive, and well conditioned to handle a 12-game season (plus a bowl game). You have to credit the players for their work in the ...
