The Tucson Sidewinders have announced Tucsonan Bill Plummer as the Manager of the Sidewinders for the 2007 season. Plummer becomes the fifth Manager in Sidewinders history, taking over a club that went 98-54 to win both the Pacific Coast League and Triple-A Championships.
Plummer joins Tucson after guiding the Double-A Tennessee Smokies to a 70-69 record during 2006. The 2007 season will mark Plummer’s 21st year of managing and his sixth in the Diamondbacks organization. Bill becomes the first Tucson skipper to have previously managed at the Major League level after leading the 1992 Seattle Mariners squad. Plummer holds a career record of 1126-997 while managing at the Minor League level.
Bill broke into the majors as a catcher with the Chicago Cubs in 1967 in a career that spanned ten big league seasons. Plummer spent six years with the Cincinnati Reds winning back-to-back World Championships in 1975 and 1976 while backing up Hall of Fame backstop Johnny Bench. In 367 career games Plummer hit 14 home runs and drove in 82.
