Premature births

Since I don't have any children I can't say I can imagine how it would feel to lose a child before or after birth. But I have one niece and three nephews, and I can't imagine life wiithout them. The thought of any of them dying is painful. So, that's where I drew my inspiration from in writing the story of Wes Simpson's baby (Stoic Riley Simpson), who died 10 minutes after he was born.

He was born premature -- 1 pound, 11 ounces! Wes told me he and his wife watched as Stoic took his last breath. He described the sound and the movement of his body. Just use your imagination for that one. It's a horrifying thought. His wife gave birth while they were visiting family in San Francisco. He said he was happy to have been with family when it happened.

Wes is an upbeat guy. His strength is incredible. We didn't get to meet his wife because she was at work, but Wes said she's still trying to get over what happened. He said they both have their good days and bad days. Anyone who's experienced their situation or gone through any other traumatic experience knows what that feels like. I do.

Wes has decided to ride his bike 3000 miles in 30 days to spread the word about premature births, and raise money for education and research. I'm confident he'll complete the ride successfully. He wants more people to ride with him. If you want to learn more about it click here. But Wes isn't so much concerned about the ride or money as he is raising awareness. Wes told me he and his wife never imagined something like this would happen to them. He said nothing traumatic has ever happened to either one of them or their families. They're lucky. Just goes to show, things like this can happen to anyone.
