Monday review: Minicamp over. What have we learned?

I'll flesh out an entire column later this afternoon on my thoughts from minicamp, but I'll bullet-point several topics I "learned" from watching five no-contact practices at the Saints facility the past few days.

  • Gregg Williams is going to change things up. There will be more blitzing than we'll all used to seeing. There will be formation changes, going from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and using two linebackers in nickel and dime situations, a difference from a year ago.
  • The defense is mostly buying into what Williams is selling - be aggressive, get to any and every loose ball and the play isn't over until the whistle blows. No one showed this more than cornerback Jason David, who even after the receiver was on the ground and the play was dead, continued to try and pick loose the ball as the receiver made his way back to the huddle.
  • The secondary still needs work on catching the ball. I know the old saying about defensive backs being in that position because they can't catch, but some of the drops were egregious.
  • Running back might be a little deeper than we suspected. Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas are 1A and 1B, for sure. But Mike Bell, though contact was a no-no, looked good carrying the ball and finding holes to run through.
  • The depth at receiver might actually have been helped by Marques Colston and Lance Moore taking much of the weekend off to rehab from offseason surgeries. Devery Henderson caught the ball well and Robert Meachem looked like a legitimate receiver more than he ever has in his brief NFL career.

So, that's that. I put together a two-deep depth chart Sunday afternoon that, though unofficial, can certainly whet your appetite for more.

What else was on the Web about Saints minicamp this fine Monday morning? Glad you asked.

Corroborating my view that the Saints' defense will be different than we've seen lately, Mike Triplett at the Times-Picayune sees versatility in New Orleans' future.

Gambit Weekly's Clay Smith summed up Sunday morning's activities thusly...

Les East, writing for The (Baton Rouge) Advocate has a notebook of sorts that focuses on the return of RB Reggie Bush and WR Marques Colston, both of whom participated in Sunday's practice.

And finally, when the Saints released fullback Mike Karney, there was question about why. Brian Allee-Walsh at the T-P says it appears the Saints upgraded with Heath Evans. That's why.
