January 2009 ArchivesDrew Brees and his wife Brittany are enjoying their new roles as Mom and Dad. His new son Baylen and Brittany will join him in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. Baylen was born on January 15. ...Saints guard Carl Nicks has been named to the Sporting News All-Rookie team. First-round draft pick Sedrick Ellis didn't make the squad, and he has LSU alum Glenn Dorsey to thank for that. Among other local notables, Tulane's former runningback Matt Forte, who is now with the Chicago Bears, made it the team. ...Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been named the FedEx Air Player of the Year. Minnesota runningback Adrian Peterson was named the FedEx Ground Player of the Year as well. ...Jim Haslett, well-known in New Orleans as a coach with diminishing returns, is out of the running to become the next head coach of the St. Louis Rams. Haslett, who was 45-51 as the Saints' head coach from 2000-05, went 2-10 with the Rams this year as the interim head coach after the franchise fired Scott Linehan following an 0-4 start.
ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas is breaking down the salary cap situation for each NFC South team, and for the Saints, the news isn't pretty. The team is $4.6 million over the salary cap and is the only one in the division that is over the cap.
According to a blogger over at Advanced NFL Stats, the Saints had the third worst luck in the NFL. The blogger used statistics to determine how many wins a team could normally expect to win, based on its performance in statistics like rushing and passing yards. The luckiest? The Tennessee Titans, whose luck apparently ran out last weekend after losin... The Saints made some moves on the offensive side of the ball Monday, hiring one coach and shuffling the jobs of others already on staff. On the other hand, the search for a new defensive coordinator has been quiet since Gregg Williams interviewed for the position late last week. ...Peyton Manning topped Drew Brees in voting for the NFL All-Pro team. It wasn't even that close with Manning getting 28 votes to Brees' 10. Only one other Saint even got a single vote and that was Reggie Bush, with 1 vote for top kick returner. ...Larry Holder of the Biloxi Sun-Herald says the list of candidates to become Saints defensive coordinator could be a little lengthy as several coordinators have been released from their jobs already. But he thinks the Saints could go another way, waiting to talk with coaches of teams still in the playoffs. That means the search could take longer than fans would like. ...Scroll on down until you see the tight end position on this list and you'll see what lots of people have been discussing amongst friends and co-workers at the water cooler this season in New Orleans: Jeremy Shockey was the biggest bust at the tight end position. Now, to be fair, he was injured for much of the season and I don't ... Here's something you haven't heard in a long time, if ever: The Sporting News says that Robert Meachem is one of the likeliest candidates to have a breakout season in 2009. It'll be his third year, though second if you don't count his injury-plagued first season. The sports mag is assuming the Saints will have trouble holding... Saints cornerback Tracy Porter, who suffered a season-ending injury in week 5, made quite the impression on ESPN's Pat Yasinskas. He listed Porter as one of the NFL's emerging stars and was the only NFC South representative. Next year, with cornerback Mike McKenzie coming off yet another season-ending injury, the Saints are definitely going to need someone in... |
